Auguste Comte was a French philosopher born in 1798 who is known as the inventor of sociology. He believed that human progress occurs in three steps - theological, metaphysical, and positive - and that society should be run by technocrats using scientific methods rather than individual rationality. Comte also felt that sociology would become the most important science and help establish order in a time of political and moral crisis in post-French Revolution Europe. He advocated for positivism as a way to counter communism and conservatism.
