Through researching UK music tribes, the document determines that the alternative tribe best matches the punk genre and Slaves' song "The Hunter". Key reasons are that alternative tribes seek to separate themselves from the mainstream through dress, tattoos, and musical tastes like punk and metal. Additionally, alternative tribes appreciate live music, which punk fans experience at gigs. The document concludes this research into punk audiences will help style a music video for "The Hunter" to attract punk fans.
2. Through looking through UK tribes I have been able to pick out which audience category
mostly suits the punk genre in correlation to the song “The Hunter” by Slaves. Due to my
audience research, I believe the alternative tribe mostly suits the Punk genre. The reasons
being that in the Alternative description for the tribe it states that “Alternative tribes are
driven by the need to set themselves apart from the mainstream. This is evidently the case
for the punk genre and clear for Slaves. In the punk genre, people dress differently to
mainstream audiences stereotypically have tattoos to make them look visually different so it
fits with the punk genre. Also, I wouldn’t class punk music as the stereotypical type of music
that majority of people listen too as, chart or indie music is more stereotypical. This shows
that people that like punk music don’t follow the crowd which fits this statement shown in
the Alternative description. The line “sleeve tattoos and multiple piercings” is stereotypical
for punk artists as this allows themto separate themselves from looking mainstream and this
is seenfor the duo Slaves.Further on in the Alternative Tribe description a key line that stands
out is “Alternative Tribes are passionate about music, sharing an appreciation for live music”.
A person who likes punk music would know about this if they have ever gone to a live gig or
a festival. Some saySlaves sound better when performing live which is strange, but just shows
how the buzz of a live audience and many people jumping around can influence your
performance and give that bit extra when performing as you want to please the people that
have come to watch you. Furthermore, the sub section within the Alternative Tribes audience
profile reads the hardcore section. It states “Hardcores have a serious affinity with a
screaming genre of punk”. This is the case for the band slaves, in a lot of their songs
screaming/shouting occurs regularly to emphasise their passion for the music they produce.
The hardcore section mentions tattoos again which I have previously mentioned their
significance in the identity of punk artists. Within the metallers sub section it mentions “head
banging” which would most typically occur for a person who likes punk music due to the next
quote, “loud music “and it just makes you want to be crazy and dance. Which is typically what
a trait is for a punk music lover. “Pop punk alongside heavy metal on their playlists” and “the
normalisation of tattoos and diversifying music tastes across UK tribes”. These are all
elements found within the stereotypical punk audience member. “Pop punk alongside heavy
metal on their playlists” is how a punk audience member’s playlist would involve as this is
their taste in genre. This line backs up the idea that someone who likes punk music is in the
alternative tribe. Also, again the note of tattoos for people within the alternative tribe in this
sub section is again mentioned to ac up the idea that this makes them appear to be different.
Moreover, for the final sub section that has relevance to someone that is a fan of the punk
music genre. The sub category in alternative states this and has its own section named
“punks”. It gives a short description on the punk genre and what it is like and backs up the
idea that people who like punk music are within the alternative music tribe.
To conclude, through conducting my research into audience research I have been able to
highlight what a person who typically likes punk music is. Various characteristics, physical
traits are listed to give a good audience profile into what punk people are like. This market
research will benefit our music group in the future when it comes to creating our punk music
video to the song “The Hunter” by punk duo Slaves. As we will be able to style the video and
create it in a way that interests and excites the people that love the punk genre.
