The Goal of Online Map Collections
• Create an interactive, online collection of maps that include…
- Archival quality images of maps in the collection
- The ability to browse, search, compare, and download the images
- The ability to share content in the collection with others
• …thereby providing a rich and engaging online experience to increase the use of the
collection while at the same time digitally archiving the paper maps.
Demographics and Statistics Atlas
• Living Atlas content
• Story Map applications
(apps)
• Series > Tabbed
• Series > Side Accordion
USGS Historical Topographic Map Explorer
• Almost 200,000 USGS
historical topographic
maps (quads)
• Simple, intuitive web
app
• Downloadable and
configurable for users
Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas Strategic Assessment: Data Atlas
• NOAA
• 99 maps
• Content:
- Maps
- Legends
- Sketches
- Text
- References
Metadata Maps (Scanned and
Georeferenced)
Folders for Large Collections
Mosaic Datasets
Master Mosaic Dataset
Image
Service
Web
Web app
Interaction in the App
• Browse the map collection
- Read like a book from front to back
- Flip randomly through pages of a book
• Search for content
- Know what to look for by subject or by location
• Compare content
- Adjacent locations, similar locations, same location over time
- Related subjects
• Download images of the maps
- Georeferenced for use in GIS
• Share content
- Current view of the app
Content in the App
• The original collection of maps
• Original content related to the maps
• New ways to interact with the original content
• New content? Not at this time.
The map window provides a full-
view of the atlas map extent when
fully zoomed out (the default
extent for any map selection).
Some general references to scan
components extracted as UI
elements in the digital
presentation.
All would have to be a largest-
case-scenario to fit/size
consistently.
The map page is georeferenced
and placed into the map
interaction window (with UI frame
overtop to cover the scanned map
margins).
The interactive atlas layout
consists of three main zones.
• Header
Title, search (primarily species
species name, but driven by
whatever tags we can extract
from the text), and app menu
(e.g., light/ dark theme,
favorites, about, sources,
quick-jumps).
• Body
Interactive map zone
• (georeferenced scanned map
image zoomable to a reason-
able map scale, supplemental
data overlays), legend toggle
(with scanned extract of atlas
legend supplemented with
additional feed options), map
selection panel with image
(scan extract), name (including
a pin-compare option), favorite
toggle, social button, and
species information toggle
(scanned extract with OCR).
• Footer
Content selection with several
several means of organizing
atlas content. Atlas pages as
selectable dots or bars.
Toggling the “i” button of a
species displays a scrolling panel,
housing the scanned text
description of the species.
Ideally, this scan has been run
through an OCR so the text is live,
searchable, and selectable.
Clicking the panel’s close button,
re-clicking the species “i” toggle,
or choosing another species page
dismisses the scrolling panel.
A map-specific legend is available
by toggling the legend graphic in
the top right corner of the map.
It includes a scanned section of
the atlas page, prefixed with an
option to select supplemental
overlay layers.
Name
Several means of browsing the
atlas are provided. In the footer,
the reader can choose to organize
the species selection by Chapter
(the original page-order of the
atlas), Name (an alphabetical
ordering of the animals by
common name), and Size (animal
size, extracted possibly from
species description text or the
scale on the sketches).
Other forms of organization can be
provided as well.
Each page or view represents one
species in the atlas. Choosing a tic
from the footer loads the
appropriate subject into the
viewer.

  • 14. Toggling the “i” button of a species displays a scrolling panel, housing the scanned text description of the species. Ideally, this scan has been run through an OCR so the text is live, searchable, and selectable. Clicking the panel’s close button, re-clicking the species “i” toggle, or choosing another species page dismisses the scrolling panel.
  • 15. A map-specific legend is available by toggling the legend graphic in the top right corner of the map. It includes a scanned section of the atlas page, prefixed with an option to select supplemental overlay layers.
  • 16. Name Several means of browsing the atlas are provided. In the footer, the reader can choose to organize the species selection by Chapter (the original page-order of the atlas), Name (an alphabetical ordering of the animals by common name), and Size (animal size, extracted possibly from species description text or the scale on the sketches). Other forms of organization can be provided as well. Each page or view represents one species in the atlas. Choosing a tic from the footer loads the appropriate subject into the viewer.

Editor's Notes

  1. Atlas Apps for Online Map Collections Presenter: Aileen Buckley, Esri Today’s expectations for atlases are different from what they were ten or even five years ago. Maps are now expected to be freely available online and accessible via easy-to-use and interactive web apps. Maps in atlases are no different.
