Editor's Notes

  1. My name is Aileen Buckley, and I am a research cartographer at Esri and one of the nearly 175 members of the Esri Science Virtual Team. I have been asked to take few minutes to talk about Science at Esri.
  2. Science at Esri focuses on supporting both basic and applied science, while also recognizing that there are many major themes of compelling interest to society that will drive scientific research for the next several decades. Thus we view science as helping us to understand not only how the Earth works, but also how the Earth should look, and how we look at the Earth. These are, examples of The Science of WhereTM which was a branding concept that Esri initiated in 2017.
  3. But these are not new concepts at Esri. Jack and Laura started the company in 1969, as the Environmental Systems Research Institute.
  4. Based on a idea from Harvard, the goal of Esri was to take some of the best ideas from the scientific community and apply them to real-world projects, thus implementing those scientifically-based concepts and projects for customers and subsequently developing software to support scientific inquiry.
  5. The organization has evolved to where we still provide tools to let users do project work for themselves, but at Esri there remains a very strong element of the original vision which was founded on science.
  6. To that end, we have scientists on staff implementing science-based GIS projects for users and in collaboration with users. We have over 90 PhDs working at Esri and over 1,500 who hold a Master degree, many of which are science degrees. These people bring with them not only their education, but also a variety of perspectives due to the variations in their backgrounds, interests, cultures, and disciplines.
  7. We also have a Chief Scientist, Dr. Dawn Wright, who has an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Physical Geography and Marine Geology from University of California in Santa Barbara.
  8. Dr. Wright’s mission is to foster a program to strengthen the scientific foundation for Esri software and services in a wide variety of scientific disciplines.
  9. She, along with other members of Esri’s Internal Science Community, represent Esri to the national and international scientific community on various boards, councils, and research projects, as well as our own internal research projects.
  10. In addition to supporting the science community, we seek to do good science ourselves at Esri. Two recent examples include Esri’s collaboration with the US Geological Survey to develop new maps of Global Ecological Land Units and Global Ecological Marine Units. These projects were commissioned by the Group on Earth Observations, a consortium of almost 100 nations collaborating to build the Global Earth Observation System of Systems or GEOSS. More information can be found at the web sites or in the journals noted.
  11. I want to close with a few words about Esri and Open Science. GIS provides the unique ability to use location and maps as a way to fuse diverse data and systems and bring everything into a common view through Open Science. Esri At Esri, we think of GIS as a way to support this by allowing agencies to collaborate and share data, software, apps, and services, for example, through dynamic maps and online applications. We also support open education to help people learn how to leverage the platform for their own science needs. To do that, we follow the FAIR principles to make data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. But we also try to go beyond that by sharing our work in scientific publications, making accessible our own research data and materials, sharing source code, and providing access for all. Ultimately, we use GIS to re-assert science as a global public good, supporting academia, government, industry and non-profits.
  12. Thank you!
