Family physicians have a generally positive attitude toward quality assurance initiatives, though their knowledge and personal involvement varies. A survey of 122 family physicians found that 63% were knowledgeable about quality concepts, while their personal involvement scored 59 points on a scale of 10. Physicians who had participated in quality workshops showed higher personal involvement scores. Family physicians expect support from independent institutions like departments of family medicine as well as healthcare organizations in developing and implementing quality standards.

Abstract: Training and education on health literacy must start in the undergraduate nursing program. While nursing schools include health education courses and provide opportunities for nursing students to give healthcare information to individuals in various healthcare settings, there is a dearth of sufficient local empirical evidence to support how nursing schools are preparing nursing students with the required competencies to aid individuals with low health literacy skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the level of health literacy knowledge and experience among senior nursing students in a state university in Iloilo City. This study utilized a descriptive research design among 160 senior nursing students and data were gathered using Cormier’s (2006) Health Literacy Knowledge and Experience Survey (HL-KES) questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used to analyze data. Results revealed that majority of nursing students had low level of health literacy knowledge specifically on guidelines for presenting written healthcare information and use of formal tools to assess health literacy. Responses to the Health Literacy Experience scale suggest that nursing students almost never use health literacy screening tools to assess health literacy, almost never utilize audiotapes, videotapes and computer software to provide health care information, and almost never can provide a quiet and private place to give health teachings to individuals. Rather, nursing students use informal assessment techniques to assess health literacy. No significant difference was found in the knowledge and experience of male and female nursing students. There was no significant relationship between nursing students’ grade in Health Education Course and their Health Literacy Knowledge. Nursing students’ knowledge on health literacy was not significantly related to their health literacy experience. It is strongly recommended that health literacy must be given greater emphasis in the undergraduate nursing curriculum.

Multidisciplinary rounds at PMMC led to decreased excess days and Medicare average length of stay. The process is being shared with PSJHE. Next steps include continuing the process at PMMC, expanding it to all inpatient units, observing the PSJHE process, and including patients and families in rounds. Standardizing the rounds process resulted in improved communication across disciplines and more consistent plans of care.

Next steps include continuing the process at PMMC, expanding it to all inpatient units, observing the PSJHE process, and including patients and families in rounds. Standardizing the rounds process resulted in improved communication across disciplines and more consistent plans of care.

Comparative Cost Analysis of Depression Care Interventions in Community Partn...
This project will determine the cost of low- and high-intensity interventions for depression. The project will also compare the costs of the interventions and determine whether they save money for the health system or society in general, since people who recover from chronic depression may require less public support because they will need to see a doctor less and will be able to work more. The low-intensity approach is called Resources for Services. Under this approach, we give providers and agencies technical assistance on how to (1) screen for depression, and (2) educate patients around depression and their treatment options, which include cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. We also train providers and agencies to deliver these treatments. The high-intensity approach is called Community Engagement and Planning, which calls for adapting depression-care materials to agency networks and providing intensive, in-person trainings, conferences and site visits.
My Plate The Musical
“MyPlate! The New Food Guide Musical” is an interactive and unique intervention program performed by professional Broadway actors, university students, and children at elementary schools in underserved communities. Over the last three years, CSUN's Marilyn Magaram Center and the Fitness and Nutrition Initiative have collaborated to study the effectiveness of this program on children’s healthy eating and physical activity, with a focus on lowering childhood obesity and chronic disease. This national initiative has been implemented 95 times, reaching 9,500 participating students (and over 28,500 student viewers) and consists of a series of nutrition education classes in conjunction with physical activity in the form of rehearsals and performance of an original musical.
MyPlate! was developed by Helen Butleroff-Leahy (a registered dietitian, ex-Rockette, Broadway dancer, director, choreographer) and her co-writer for the musical portion is Roumel Reaux. MyPlate! is run by The Nutrition and Fitness Education Initiative, Inc., a not-for-profit company with 501C3 status. MyPlate! was brought to Los Angeles (LA) as a collaboration with CSUN’s Marilyn Magaram Center’s (MMC) Director (Dr. Annette Besnilian) and has been implemented in LA elementary schools to help reduce rates of childhood obesity. With this collaboration, CSUN MMC has been conducting evidence based research and implementing the program with its sustainability plan.
Through CSUN collaboration pilot data were collected with over 1500 students and results indicated that students (actors and viewers) reported significantly higher physical activity and nutrition knowledge at posttest than pretest. Not surprisingly, actors had a significantly greater change from pretest to posttest than the viewers. At one school, 236 students completed a pretest and posttest prior to the intervention (control group), and then those same students completed another posttest after the intervention (treatment group). Thus, each student was his/her own control. The treatment group showed significantly greater change from pretest to posttest than the control group. Results suggested a fun and interactive intervention can be a great tool to increase children’s nutrition and physical activity knowledge. To ensure sustainability, a "train-the-trainer" and "peer-to-peer" model has been successfully implemented, and we continue to identify school personnel and local talent to ensure this program is effective and sustainable.

This study used discrete choice experiments to identify policies that could improve nurse recruitment and retention in rural Kenya. Nurses were presented with choices between hypothetical job postings that varied across several attributes like contract type, allowances, training opportunities, and requirements for promotion. The results showed that offering permanent contracts, rural allowances, training opportunities, and fewer years before promotion increased the likelihood nurses would accept positions in rural areas. These types of incentives may help address staffing shortages that contribute to unequal healthcare access and health outcomes in Kenya.

Journal Club Presentation on Depression, Anxiety in Diabetes
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety in Malaysian diabetic patients and identify associated factors. The study found depression in 20% of patients and anxiety in 9%. Multiple logistic regression identified several predictors of anxiety and depression. Higher neuroticism and depression increased odds of anxiety, while higher conscientiousness and psychological quality of life decreased odds. The findings indicate a need to screen diabetic patients for mental health issues and address psychosocial factors in their care.

Challenge of integration care of clp (acpm 2014)
This document summarizes the results of an online survey of 75 healthcare providers in Indonesian general hospitals about psychiatric services. It finds that 20-40% of medical inpatients have psychiatric disorders like depression, anxiety, and dementia. However, 52.8% of hospitals reported having no psychiatrist on staff. The most common psychiatric cases seen were depression (34.7%), anxiety (27.8%), and insomnia (11.1%). While 98.6% of providers felt a psychiatric consultation-liaison team was needed, 75% reported their hospital had no such team. The survey concludes there is evidence integrated medical-psychiatric care can improve outcomes for patients with co-occurring conditions.

Low potential of triggering unwanted immune responses or genotoxicity,

Viruses are naturally evolved vehicles that efficiently transfer their genes into host cells.
Choice of viral vector is dependent on gene transfer efficiency, capacity to carry foreign genes, toxicity, stability, immune responses towards viral antigens and potential viral recombination.
There are a wide variety of vectors used to deliver DNA or oligo nucleotides into mammalian cells, either in vitro or in vivo.
The most common vector system based on retroviruses, adenoviruses, herpes simplex viruses, adeno associated viruses.

PGx Analysis in VarSeq: A User’s Perspective
Since our release of the PGx capabilities in VarSeq, we’ve had a few months to gather some insights from various use cases. Some users approach PGx workflows by means of array genotyping or what seems to be a growing trend of adding the star allele calling to the existing NGS pipeline for whole genome data. Luckily, both approaches are supported with the VarSeq software platform. The genotyping method being used will also dictate what the scope of the tertiary analysis will be. For example, are your PGx reports a standalone pipeline or would your lab’s goal be to handle a dual-purpose workflow and report on PGx + Diagnostic findings.

Discuss and demonstrate the approaches with array and NGS genotyping methods for star allele calling to prep for downstream analysis.
Following genotyping, explore alternative tertiary workflow concepts in VarSeq to handle PGx reporting.
Moreover, we will include insights users will need to consider when validating their PGx workflow for all possible star alleles and options you have for automating your PGx analysis for large number of samples.
