WHAT IS ASTRONOMY
 Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial objects and
phenomena.
 It uses mathematics, physics, and chemistry in order to explain their
origin and evolution.
 Objects of interest include planets, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxies,
and comets. Relevant phenomena include supernova explosions,
gamma ray bursts, quasars, blazars, pulsars, and cosmic microwave
background radiation.
 More generally, astronomy studies everything that originates outside
Earth's atmosphere. Cosmology is a branch of astronomy. It studies
the Universe as a whole.[1]
MEASURING THE UNIVERSE
ASTRONOMICAL UNIT-Earth’s
distance from sun
• LIGHT YEAR-Distance that light year
travels
GALAXY
 A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust,
and billions of stars and their solar
systems. A galaxy is held together by
gravity. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, also has
a supermassive black hole in the middle. ...
Some scientists think there could be as
many as one hundred billion galaxies in
the universe.
TYPES OF GALAXY
SPIRAL GALAXY

WHAT IS A STAR
 STAR – A luminous body In the sky
.
 MAGNITUDE-Apparent brightness
of a star, describe by a number
 (1-6)
CONSTELLATION
A constellation is a group of stars that
appears to form a pattern or picture like
Orion the Great Hunter, Leo the Lion, or
Taurus the Bull. Constellations are easily
recognizable patterns that help people
orient themselves using the night sky.
There are 88 “official” constellations.
PEGASUS THE WINGED HORSE
Description: Aurora is
sometimes referred to
as 'polar light'. It is
predominantly seen in
the regions of high
altitudes like the Arctic
and Antarctic.
An aurora is caused by
the streams of
electrified particles
(which are emitted by
the sun) trapped in the
magnetic field of the
earth.
AURORA BOREALIS
ECLIPSE
 An eclipse takes place when one heavenly
body such as a moon or planet moves into
the shadow of another heavenly body.
There are two types of eclipses on Earth:
an eclipse of the moon and an eclipse of
the sun. What Is a Lunar Eclipse? The
moon moves in an orbit around Earth, and
at the same time, Earth orbits the sun.
TYPES OF ECLIPSE
 A solar eclipse is when the sun is covered by the
Moon. There are four types of solar eclipses.
 Partial eclipse. In a partial eclipse, the Moon
crosses the path of the sun, but does not
completely block it out. ...
 Annular eclipse. ...
 Total Eclipse. ...
 Hybrid Eclipse.
Solar eclipses Partial eclipse
IMAGES OF TYPES OF ECLIPSE
Annular eclipse Total Eclipse. .
IMAGES OF TYPES OF ECLIPSE
HYBRID ECLIPSE.
Half of the Moon’s
surface is always
illuminated by
sunlight. However,
just how much of that
light we can see from
our point of view on
Earth varies every day
and this is what we
refer to as a Moon
phase.
