This document provides an ASSURE lesson plan for teaching first grade special needs students the months of the year. The learners are a class of 10 boys and 7 girls, who are 70% white, 20% African American, and 10% Hispanic. Seven students have ADHD. The objective is for students to learn the order of the 12 months through recitation and by learning a song about the months. Materials include a handout with the months, a smart board to display the song, a CD player and music. The teacher will utilize the materials before class and require student participation through recitation, singing, and a drawing/writing activity about their favorite month. Progress will be evaluated through recitation and singing tests.

ASSURE METHOD
Scenario #1
A: Analyze Learners
The learners are a class of special needs 1st grade children. There are ten boys and 7 girls. 70% white,
20% African American, and 10% Hispanic. Seven of the students have ADHD. So in doing this lesson I will
need to keep their attention and keep them busy, but also keep it simple.
S: State Objective
This group of special needs 1st graders will learn all 12 months of the year in order that they occur by
having a sheet that has all the names of the months in order and will recite them out loud together as a
group a couple times slowly, so they will know what the words look like and how to pronounce them.
Then the teacher will teach them a song step by step, making sure they understand, this process will be
repeated every day. By the end of the week, the students will recite all the months of the year with
100% accuracy.
S: Select Methods, Materials, and Media
The materials that will be needed for this lesson will be the handout for the students to be able to read
from. The teacher will also need the smart board to show the words for the song and a list of the
months to help with reading the months out loud. The teacher will also need a cd player and music to
play the song, and crayons and plain paper for the follow up activities.
U: Utilize Media and Materials
Before teaching the lesson, look over all the materials, make sure you have everything you need and
there is no mistakes. Then before class starts make sure the music and smart board are working, and
already have the handouts on their desks and ready for when they get to class.
R: Require Learner Participation
Throughout the whole week, the students should be participating in all of the activities. For the follow
up activity, the students will pick their favorite months, draw a picture describing that month on a piece
of paper with crayons, then write a sentence on why it’s their favorite.
E- Evaluate and Revise
During the week, pay attention to the students to make sure they are participating and understanding
what is going on. If not, take a moment to help explain it them more as a whole group. To asses them,
have them recite the months and sing the song by themselves as a group with your help.
