1. The document provides instructions for creating an educational video using Windows Live Movie Maker. 1. Assignment „Creating video with Windows Live Movie Maker“
1. Chose the topic and the type of educational video you plan to produce (videolecture,
interview, process’ videodescription, real event or outdoor filming etc.)
2. Write a short descriptive scenario of Your film (main story, how many cameras You plan to
use, where the shooting will take place, main scenes, how long approximately the film should
be).
3. Prepare the equipment and film some activities for 5-10 minutes, according to Your scenario.
4. Import video clips from camera to computer via Windows Live Movie Maker (if you use
FireWire-cable) or copy and paste clips from camera to the hard disk of the computer (if you
use USB-connection or memory card).
5. Drag or import all You clips (scenes) on the timeline and put them in right order.
6. Play video using Preview window (on the left) and Play/Pause button and mark all the places
that should be cropped (cut out). It is better to mark the time periods (minutes, seconds) on
paper.
7. After that go to Edit-tab, put cursor on the right place on the clip (that is marked on paper)
and click Split button:
. You’ve cut the scene, now move a bit forward and make another cut (Split button) –
so You’ve marked the end-point of the scene You want to remove. After two cut-places have
been made, just select the little clip between those two cut places and click delete button on
the keyboard. The clip is deleted or cut from your movie. You can delete all other
unnecessary places from your video the same way.
8. If You want to delete a small part from the beginning or from the end of the clip, select Trim
Tool and set the period You want to delet (if it the beinning of the clip select Set Start Point,
if the end of the clip – Set End Point).
9. Add some pictures between clips: Home-tab: Add Videos and Photos (find some picture file).
You can drag the picture on the timeline anywhere You want and place it between clips
(where they were cut). It can be a photograph or PowerPoint-slide converted to picture.
10. Now You can fill the cut places on the video by different Transition effects, so the movie will
be smooth. Place the cursor on the clip before which the transition effect will appear and
Choose Animations-tab. Choose the effect you like by clicking on it. If You want to use the
same effect between every clip – click Apply to all button.
11. Now add the movie Title (place the cursor at the beginning of the video first), Select Home-
tab and click Title. Now You can write and format the text of your title. Titles can be added
before every clip or picture on the timeline.
12. Add the Credits (titles at the end of the movie): Home-tab: Credits.
13. If You want to add text (comment) on clips or pictures, place the cursor on the righ place on
the clip and choose Caption in the Home-tab. Type the text and format it, if you like.
14. Now You can add some background music or sound: Home-tab: Add Music. You can find
some good free music for instance here: http://www.jamendo.com/en/ (just download the
mp3-files and add them to your video).

2. 15. You can drag (holding the mouse-button down) music-clip on the timeline, making it shorter
or longer. Choose Project-tab: Fit to music, if You want the music to be of the same duration
that the clip.
16. Edit background music and original sound of the video: Edit-tab or Options-tab: Fade-in and
Fade out, Volume (You can mute the original sound of the video). Pay attention which tools
you use – video original sound (yellow) or music-file sound (green):
17. Now You can add additional visual effects to your video, or some parts (clips) of it. Select the
clip (clips) and choose Visual Effects-tab. There you can see different effects, preview them
and click on them to apply one.
18. Save Your project (from left upper tab and then choose Save Movie: For computer.
19. After the file is ready, upload it to YouTube (www.youtube.com) , Vimeo (www.vimeo.com)
or TeacherTube (www.teachertube.com) , first you should create the account there.

21. You can also embed the video on your website or blog and send the link of the page.
