This document provides step-by-step instructions for creating a documentary using Windows Movie Maker. It describes how to import videos, images, and audio clips, edit them together on a timeline or storyboard, add titles and effects, record narration, and export the finished movie. The key panels and views of the Movie Maker interface are also explained, including the collection pane, video preview pane, timeline view, and storyboard view.

2. Step One Open Movie Maker: Start All Programs Windows Movie Maker Start Exploring!

3. Movie Maker Setup The Task Pane Capture video actually allows you to import video, pictures, and audio. Just click and navigate to your file (avi, jpg, gif, mp3, etc…) Edit Movie allows you to add effects and transitions to your videos, pictures, and audio. It also lets you add titles and credits to your movie. Finish Movie turns your project into the movie. You MUST save it to your computer for the final product. Your project is a .mswmm file, but the final project must be .wmv. If you lose the task pane, go to View>Task Pane from the top menu items.

4. Movie Maker Setup The Collection Pane The Collection pane is where your picture, audio, and sound files will appear after you import them. Above, you see a sample of a sound file, video file, and a picture file.

5. Movie Maker Setup Video Preview Pane The Video Pane gives you the preview of the movie you’re making. After placing an object into a timeline or storyboard view, you can run your movie to see how it will look.

6. Movie Maker Setup The Storyboard View The Storyboard is an editing area located at the bottom of the window. It is a panel of pictures or other movie clips, laid out in the sequence that they will be shown in the movie.

7. Movie Maker Setup The Timeline View The timeline allows you to edit sound and pictures together. You can drag video and sound files from the Collection Pane to the Audio track. It’s best to use Audacity of you want to use multiple sounds. Along the top, you can see the time sequence of the movie. You can use the magnifying glass to zoom in or out on the time. You can shorten a video clip from the end, but you cannot make it longer.

8. Now that you understand the various views and panes, its time to start building your movie!

9. Step Two Import the things you will use to build your movie Images : Capture Video Import Pictures (wherever your pictures are located, i.e. My Pictures, My1GB [E:], desktop, etc.) Select the images you wish to upload (use Ctrl key to select more than one image at a time) Click Import

Step Two Import the things you will use to build your movie Video : Download video from YouTube: Get the YouTube downloader : Get the URL of your video Launch YouTube Downloader Enter video URL, click OK Save [to wherever you are working from] and Close Go back to Downloader Choose "Convert video (previously downloaded) from file Select video file [find your file and select it] Convert to "Windows Media Video" and click OK To Import Video [from file you downloaded video to] Click Import Audio: Paste URL of MP3 into File Name -Or- Locate your music clip wherever it is stored Click Import Add sounds to the track in the Timeline View, but keep in mind that in Movie Maker, you can only have one sound playing at a time

11. Step Three Drag a clip from your collection to the storyboard below The storyboard is easier to work in, especially for pictures. From the Collection Pane , just drag and drop the file into the larger boxes in the order you want them to appear.

12. Step Four Adding Effects Adding Video Effects: You can add effects to your pictures using Video Effects in Edit Movie (from the Task Pane) . When you select this, you’ll see a small star appear on your storyboard slide. Just click on View Video Effects and drag the desired effect onto the star. You can add two effects to one slide.

13. Step Four Adding Effects Adding Video Transitions: The smaller boxes in the Storyboard View are from transitions you pick from Edit Movie. Just click View Video Transitions from the Task Pane and click and drag the desired transition effect.

14. Step Four Adding Effects Adding Titles In the Edit Movie Pane, click on Make Titles or Credits . You’ll get this menu in the next window. You must have title and credit clips, the credits are where you will list your sources (research, images, audio, etc., everything that you have used in your project) Have fun, be sure to explore changing the title animation and the title text font and color!

15. Step Five Record your Narration Add your narration: In the toolbar, click Narrate Timeline Make sure that Audio Input Source is on "Microphone" (use the drop down menu) Click Start Narration When you are finished, click Stop Narration Click Done (If needed, delete and rerecord.)

16. Step Six Finish your movie: Save your movie Go to the Finish Movie pane You can save your movie to the computer or send it in an email, the email will be very large though, so make sure your recipient has enough storage! This will be sent as a wmv. file, you will not be able to edit it any further While you are working on your project in the .mswmm file, you can edit anything you need to edit. This is not the final copy. Once converted, your movie will be a .wmv file. You cannot edit this anymore. This is the finished movie that you can post to YouTube or send through email, you cannot send/post/transfer the .mswmm file So make sure you are 100% satisfied with the .mswmm version before converting to .wmv.
