2. Mainstream audiences.
• A mainstream film is a common film watched by the masses and
given wide releases and advertising. An example of a mainstream
horror film is Paranormal activity. This film is mainstream as it
appealed to a wide audience rather than a cult following. It was also
given a wide global release giving it a mainstream audience. Its target
audience would be males/females aged 16-30, this is because it does
not have an extreme sinister and terrifying tone to it therefore
appealing to the masses. It is also a household name among the
horror genre.

3. Independent audiences
• An independent film means a film which is produced to befit a niche
audience, without the funds of the large conglomerates. These films
make less revenue than the mainstream films. An example of an
Independent film is May. This is an independent film as It was
produced outside of the major media systems and had a local
distribution process. This meant that it did not receive the same
amount of profits as the mainstream films. Its target audience would
be males aged 16 and over. This is due to the fact that it is very
sinister and unusual which would not appeal to the masses but rather
a cult following.
