2. Area of interest, research topic and research method (should be 70-90s)
When I was a child, my parents always tried to teach me how to get on with everyone. Due to all of what my parents have educated me, if I have any opportunities to do a business research, I will choose a business ethics as a first choice. Therefore, I am so interesting in doing a research about business ethics which is “Potential consequences of unethical behavior in Nestle”.
In this assessment, qualitative method and previous investigations together with other journal articles, other case studies are used to support my business related research. Basically, pe people should understand clearly about the definition of qualitative method. According to Cresswell (1994), a qualitative study is defined as an inquiry process of understanding a social or human problem, based on building a complex, formed with words, reporting detailed views of informants, and conducted in a natural setting.
Because of employing the secondary data, I want to pay attention to advantages and disadvantages of this method. Now with the availability of online access, secondary research is more openly accessed. Furthermore, the use of secondary research may help the researcher to clarify the research question. The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to move from beyond basic mastery of developmental aspects of behavior to a more advanced integrative knowledge of the ways in which development is a constant interplay of affective, biological, cognitive, social, and other aspects of behaviors. For this paper you are asked to select a topic or issue in developmental psychology that you would like to learn more about. After reviewing a minimum of 12 peer-reviewed journal articles and/or scholarly books, you will write a paper that outlines your topic and explains its relevance to developmental psychology. In your review of the literature make sure that you address two or more aspects of behavior (affective, biological, cognitive, social, etc.) related to your developmental issue. You must also include a discussion of cultural considerations and how aspects of individual and cultural diversity may impact your topic. Your paper should be 10-12 pages long, not including Title Page and References. Below is a sample outline for your paper.

NOTE: These are the instructions for the entire speech. For this week, you are ONLY claiming the country you wish to present on and locating three research sources, not delivering the speech.
In 5-6 minutes, you should INFORM the audience about the culture of a country, other than the USA. You must do RESEARCH for this speech, utilizing the library's website provided below and known as the "LibGuide." Find at least three academic sources (you may have more than 3) using the libguide provided here.
NOTE: The primary function of this speech is to explore what it would be like to be immersed in another culture, or what you might need to know to live there. Please do not confuse this speech with a book report, highlighting mainly historical information or lists of demographic facts. The majority of your research should focus on the ways of thinking, being, and life in this culture.
REMEMBER: A good informative speech creates information hunger (makes you want to know more!) Don't create a list of facts. Engage your audience with interesting information!
In your speech, you will cover these areas for the three main points of your speech
Point 1
About this Country Examples of information that would go in this point--Geographic location and capital city, Country’s economic status (major world power, developed country or developing country), Population demographics (including major ethnic and racial groups), Political structure (including name of president or leader), Major languages spoken, Transportation systems (how do most people travel?), Entry requirements (Visa or vaccinations required), Currency used and exchange rate for the US, etc. CURRENT EVENTS would be a great feature for this main body point as well.
Point 2
Cultural Aspects Examples--What is the country famous for in terms of art, architecture, dances, etc. What are the most popular places to visit and why? Culinary traditions (any famous dishes or dining habits to note) or major religions, or RECENT CULTURAL EVENTS would be great additions to this main body point.
Point 3
Unique Communication Behaviors Examples: Nonverbal communication (gestures, body language, eye contact patterns, use of space), Family structure (extended families living under one roof, polygyny, etc.), Is this country monochronistic or polychronistic? Individualistic or collectivistic? Have high or low power distance? What are their communication preferences: direct or indirect? (Hint: Review Chapter 3 for this main body point!)
You may leave some of these items out or add in other interesting information that you find. Your speech should have an introduction, be ordered logically and include transitions between main points, utilize diverse and interesting supporting material (see p. 366 of your text), have two verbal citations, a conclusion, a formal outline with two internal references and MLA formatted works cited entries. Your research sources must come from the libguide provided here. You should.

1a. Assignment 2: Responding to Technology Discussion
To those who transported goods with arms and legs, the wheel appeared to be high technology at one point in time. Today, technology is all around us—and we need to learn how to use the new technologies in ways that make our tasks easier. For this class, we will focus on digital information technologies we use for school and daily life.
Considering how different people use and respond to technology, answer the following questions:
Describe how you use information in your daily life. Specifically, how do you use technology in your communications, whether at work, home, or school?
How has the World Wide Web and accompanying technologies (cell phones, e-mail, social media, etc.) changed the way society works with, handles, and interprets information?
Does computer ownership affect your ability to communicate?
Consider the following when answering:
What is an operating system? What operating system is on your computer? (To answer this question, search for “operating systems” on the Internet. Based on the information that is displayed on the screen, identify which operating system is on your computer.)
What is RAM? How much RAM do you have on your computer? (To answer this question, search for “system properties” within your computer system; this will tell you how much RAM you have in your system.) Can you update your RAM on the computer you have? (To find out this information, you can do either of the following:
Visit the website of the company that made your computer and search for this information.
Call a local store that sells computers and tell the executives there that you want to upgrade your RAM and you want to know if it is possible with the computer system you have.)
What is software? What software packages do you have on your computer that will help you with college? (To find out about this, you can call a local store that sells computers and ask them to assist you in finding this answer. You can also look at the “Programs” or “All Programs” folder on your computer and list out the programs you have.)
You will need to do research outside of this course to justify, support, and expand on your response. Since we do not cover APA format until
Module 2
, you do not need to use any specific citation format, but you must identify where you found any information you use in your response. Use any format or style you wish for your citations.
Your initial response should be at least 150 words.

BUSI 201
Final Project Instructions
Rationale:
The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you with creating an oral presentation utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint while you explore the ethical implications of the technology used in this course. You must also demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively with your audience.
Complete the following tasks on your ownand submit your work to Blackboard.
Requirements:
1. The general purpose of the presentation is to consider the ethical implications of using software applications to house real data similar to that which you have used in this course. While they should not be your sole source for examples, you must reference the Excel and Access Programs specifically in your presentation.
Questions to consider:
· What responsibility do the creators and users of technology bear in ensuring that truth is conveyed in the use and manipulation of data? How does security factor into these responsibilities?
· Discuss the balance between absolute truth and using data to reach a particular goal.
· How does this topic relate to your conduct as a student and in a real-world setting?
Use a biblical worldview to support your ideas and include at least 3 academic sources. Cite your work using current APA format.
2. Use the recording features in PowerPoint and your microphone to record your oral presentation. State your name, the course, and the date of the recording at the start of the recording. Your presentation will be 5-8 minutes in length, taking the audience through your entire PowerPoint. As you will be doing a good bit of talking, the slides themselves should favor bullet points and short statements over longer paragraphs, but your message must be clear. You may use notes to assist you, but do not read word-for-word from the notes. This tends to be obvious to the audience and makes for a less compelling presentation.
3. Required Slide Elements:
· A title for each slide
· A unified theme
· Slide transitions
· Subtle slide animations appropriate for a business/academic environment
· At least one SmartArt diagram
· At least one chart using the Insert Chart feature within PowerPoint. You are welcome to include charts from outside sources, properly cited, but ensure that at least one is of your own making.
· Reference slide(s) using APA format. Place this at the end of your presentation.
4. Proofread your slides carefully for errors in spelling and grammar. Overall appearance counts. Consider how you can go beyond the project instructions to create an effective and visually pleasing presentation.

Professional Scenarios
1. Saban is a top performing industrial equipment salesperson for D2D. After three years of working
with his best client, he receives a text message from Pat (his direct manager) assigning him to a
completely different account.
Pat has received complaints that Saban gets all of the good clients and is not a “team player.”
Saban responds to the message and asks for a meeting with Pat to discuss this change. Pat responds
with another text message that reads: “Decision final. Everyone needs to get a chance to work with the
best accounts so it is fair. Come by the office and pick up your new files.”
Moments later, Saban sends a text message to Karen, his regional manager and Pat’s boss. It simply
reads, “We need to talk.”
2. Amber, Savannah, and Stephen work for Knowledge, Inc. (a consulting company). While on a
conference call with Tim Rice Photography (an established client), the group discusses potential
problems with a marketing campaign. Tim Rice, lead photographer and owner of Tim Rice
Photography, is insistent the marketing is working and changes are not needed.

manager to alert her that James just arrived and should be reaching his desk any moment.
4. Paul works for the website division of SuperMega retail company. He receives an email late Friday
afternoon that explains a new computer will launch at the end of next June and it will be in high demand
with limited stock. Also contained in the three-page-message is that customers will be able to preorder
the item 30 days before launch according to the production company. Paul is asked to create a landing
page for consumers who are interested in learning more about the product.
By mistake, Paul sets up a preorder page for the product that afternoon (well in advance of the
company authorized period) and late Friday evening consumers begin to preorder the product. Sharon,
Vice President of Product Sales at SuperMega, learns of the error Saturday morning and calls Paul to
arrange a meeting first thing Monday morning. Sharon explains to Paul on the phone that the company
intends on canceling all of the preorders and Paul responds that the company should honor the
preorders because it was not a consumer error. After a heated exchange, Paul hangs up on Sharon
when she insist.

down the hallway and begins to punch in at the time clock located by the front desk.
Sarah, the front desk manager, says, "Good morning, James," but James ignores her, punches in, and

manager to alert her that James just arrived and should be reaching his desk any moment.

Case 1: Family Loyalty vs. Meritocracy
A man was appointed president of the newly-acquired Philippine subsidiary of a large American company. He was reviewing the organization with the company's head of human resources. One thing the president noted was that the same names reoccurred frequently in several departments. "It is our tradition," commented the HR head. "Families take care of their own. If one family member gets a good job in a Philippine company, other members of the family apply to join that company and the first member there can help the whole family become successful by helping them get hired and by coaching them to be successful. The company benefits. Our costs of recruiting are lower, we know more about the people we hire, and the commitment to family success results in fewer performance and discipline problems because family members want to please their older relatives."
The president wondered how these practices would be regarded in a large American firm, and whether or not he should take action to change them.
1. Nepotism is not illegal, but is it ethical?
2. If the business is family-owned, does that make a difference?
3. How does national culture affect this discussion?
Case 2: Is the Two-Tier System Ethically Problematic
Employees at a cereal makers plant were “locked-out” from their jobs producing cereal for over 3 months. Company management and the union representing the employees reached a stalemate in negotiations resulting in the lockout. The union claims that the primary issue is the company’s demand of dramatically increasing the number of temporary workers, who would earn $6 less per hour and receive fewer benefits. Critics claim this effectively creates a two-tier system at the plant. Under the current agreement, the company may use temporary workers for up to 30% of the workforce, but the union claims the company is now pushing for 100%. The workers, who have had their health insurance suspended, fear that their jobs will either be replaced entirely by temporary workers, or they will be f ...
Barbara Corcoran Learns Her Heart’s True Desires In her.docxrock73
Barbara Corcoran Learns Her Heart’s True Desires
In her hilarious and lighthearted book, Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 Into a
Billion Dollar Business, Barbara Corcoran demonstrates the importance of knowing what
you really want out of life (Corcoran & Littlefield, 2011). As her title suggests, Barbara
founded her real estate company, The Corcoran Group, with only $1,000 and some big
dreams. Shortly after founding the company, Barbara took out a piece of paper and wrote
down some big goals for herself and the company. In 1978, she had only 14 sales agents
working for her, who earned a total of $250,000 in commissions. She set a goal of
doubling the number of agents and the commissions every year. So she put down 28 sales
people for 1979, 56 for 1980, and so on, all the way up to 1,792 salespeople in 1985 with
total commissions of $32,000,000. Barbara was amazed when she saw the fantastic sums
projected for 1985, and of course many people, when they see such amazing sums, would
dismiss the calculations as fantasy But as Barbara put it, she went to work the next day
hustling hard for her $32 million.
Real estate agents are paid largely by commission, which is about as close as you
can get to a pure form of contingent reward for performance. However, Barbara didn’t
rely solely on the commissions to motivate her workers. She threw theme parties and held
numerous social events to build a committed workforce. Good sales agents could always
move to another firm, but not every firm had Barbara’s positive attitude and fun-filled
atmosphere. In the early years of the firm, when money was tight, Barbara and her
relatives did the cooking for the outings and parties, and she found clever ways to
entertain people with skating parties and other lively activities. As the firm became larger
and more profitable, she even hired professional entertainers for the company’s midweek
picnics, which included elephant shows, daring rides on hot air balloons, horses, or
Harley Davidsons, etc. Barbara stated “I built my company on pure fun, and believe that
fun is the most underutilized motivational tool in business today. All of my best ideas
came when I was playing outside the office with the people I worked with” (Corcoran &
Littlefield, 2011, p. 283). What did she get in return for the fun atmosphere? She had the
“most profitable real estate company per person in the United States” (p. 284). By the
time she sold her agency in 2001, she had 1,000 agents working for her, and she had the
largest real estate agency in New York – clearly her motivational strategies attracted a
large number of productive employees.
Barbara Corcoran had sold her firm for $66 million. She thought that would make
her happy, but instead, it made her sad. Although she pretended to be happy with her new
wealth and freedom, she was “secretly miserable” (Corcoran & Littlefield, 2011, p. 232).
She had lost her purpose ...

IN Deepa Mehta’s words
I wanted desperately to make CRACKING INDIA into a film, a particular film, EARTH, which would be the second in my trilogy of the elements of Fire, Earth and Water.
Tracing Bapsi was no easy task but persevere we did and soon I was talking to Bapsi on the phone, hoping that the film rights to her book were still available. Two months later, thanks to David Hamilton's unwavering belief in the project, we owned the rights, had development funds, and I was sitting at my kitchen table, writing the screenplay of EARTH.
David and Anne Masson and I had worked together on FIRE and we re-assembled the team to begin the detailed planning of the production.
During this phase Bapsi became a friend and was exceedingly generous with information and old photographs. She would talk with me for hours about what it was like growing up in Lahore during those times. Lenny, after all, was based on Bapsi. In fact, Lenny was Bapsi.
The irony of our situation hasn't escaped Bapsi or myself. Bapsi is from Pakistan and now a US citizen. I'm from India and now living in Canada. If neither of us had moved from our respective homelands, the film just wouldn't have been possible. Pakistan and India, since the Partition of 1947, are sworn enemies. Not only have they fought three major wars against each other, but also, as I write this, both countries talk blithely about their nuclear capabilities and continue their militant aggression against each other across the still- disputed Kashmir border.
Fallen Women in the novel and film
Abducted women like Ayah and Hamdia, Lenny’s new nanny are viewed with suspicion from Lenny.

“It isn’t a jail, Lenny baby…it’s a camp for fallen women.”
“What are fallen women?”
“Hai! The questions you ask! Your mother won’t like such talk…Now keep quiet”
“Are you a fallen woman?”
Fallen women – Abducted and raped women
In the aftermath of the 1947 declaration of Indian independence, the roughly drawn new state boundaries triggered what may have been the biggest migration in human history.
Historical consensus supports a figure of 12 million people displaced, although the BBC suggests figures as high as 14.5 million people. An undeclared civil war erupted as communities of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs fought one another to establish their own identities in their redefined homelands. And, in the process, the Indian government estimates, 83,000 women were abused and abducted. Others put the number even higher.
“Rather than being raped and abandoned,” Yasmin Khan writes in The Great Partition: The ...
Barriers of therapeutic relationshipThe therapeutic relations.docxrock73
Barriers of therapeutic relationship:
The therapeutic relationship between patient and nurse is often filled with barriers that can generate obstacles for the relationship and, in the end, the health system as a whole (Sfoggia et al.,2014). There are many factors that hinder building a therapeutic relationship: language, professional jargon, communication impairment, and cultural diversity (ibid).
Language:
Language can be an obstacle to nurse-patient communication because a patient may not be able to speak the same language and therefore communication is not possible (Levin,2006). The best way to overcome this barrier is providing a translator who can explain a professional facilitator's message easily to the patient(ibid). For instance, if the nurse only speaks English but the patient is only able to speak Arabic, a translation to the patient of what the professional facilitator is saying leads to less chance of misunderstanding (ibid). Translation also allows a patient to feel comfortable through being able to speak in their own language (ibid).
Medical jargon:
Jargon is a technical language that is comprehended by people in a specific industry or area of work (Leblanc et al.,2014). Health professionals often use jargon to communicate with each other(ibid). For example, T.B. disease stands for tubercle bacillus and HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus (Mccrary & Christensen,1993). Jargon often makes sense to health professionals but a patient who does not understand these acronyms will not understand such communication, leading to a barrier in therapeutic relationship between patient and health professional (Leblanc et al.,2014).
Communication impairment:
Patients with communication impairment such as blindness, deafness and speech impairment often feel isolated, frustrated and self-conscious (O’Halloran et al.,2009). Some patients are born with such disabilities or have developed them as a result of disease (ibid). Therefore, nurses should provide enough time in order to describe any issue to such patients so that they do not feel uncomfortable or censured by health professionals, who must remain impartial (ibid).
Cultural diversity:
Patients often have various differences (Leblanc et al.,2014).Some of these differences are due to a patient's illness, social status, economic class, education and personality(ibid). However, according to Kirkham (1998), the deepest differences might be cultural diversity. Beheri (2009) points out that many nurses believe if they just treat patients with respect, they will avoid most cultural issues. Nevertheless, avoiding misunderstanding can be achieved through some knowledge of cultural customs, which might help and enable nurses to provide better health care to patients (ibid).
Facilitators of therapeutic relationship:
UNCRPD (2006) states that the most fundamental human right in hospital is communication. Patients are required to be provided with an effective communication method by nurs ...

Critical Analysis of the religious nature of Buddhism
The religious community often debates on whether Buddhism is categorized as a religion or as philosophical teaching. The answer to the question varies depending on an individual’s point of view. There are three main types of Buddhism practices across the world with each of them having smaller branches with slights variances in their teachings and beliefs. The different styles of Buddhist mainly encompass Theravada Buddhism, Vajrayana Buddhism, and Mahayana Buddhism. The various forms often have deities that are worshipped while others do not. Some often have scriptures while others do not usually believe in any physical form of the Buddhist teachings. The first article is authored by Rachel, a blogger, presenting the argument that Buddhism is a religion (Rachel, 1). On the other hand, the second article authored by Pamela Winfield recognizes Buddhism as a philosophy. Analyzing and comparing the two pieces having divergent views on the religious nature of Buddhism is crucial for understanding whether it is a religion or philosophy.
Summary of the articles
Rachel in her article considers Buddhism as a religion. The author acknowledges the fact that Mahayana Buddhism which is often found in greater part of Asia that includes Japan, Korea, and China often teaches on attaining enlightenment (Rachel, 1). The Mahayana often accept that every individual wishes to ensure the effective attainment of enlightenment and thus end the cycle of rebirth which others recognize as “Karma.” The article proceeds to state that Buddha is the greatest of the deities but is not worshipped. Instead, Buddha often inspires all those who practice doing as he once did. The author states that Buddhism often requires that the individuals that choose the wrong path attempt to re-accomplish these tasks in their next life alongside other punishments imposed on them by karma. The characteristics of this type of Buddhism thus often play a significant role in showing the religious nature of Buddhism. The author concludes by stating that Buddhism often contains all the different elements of a religion. Moreover, the article associates Buddhism with fallacies that characterize other religions and just as dangerous as other religions as well. A quote proves the claim on the dangerous nature of Buddhism that the author uses to summarize the teachings of Buddhism.
On the other hand, Winfield tends to focus on enlightening the readers on some of the aspects of Buddhism that ensures its a ...

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

Paper #1
Current Events Video Project on Ethics, Corporate Social
Responsibility, and Sustainability (See due date in Blackboard)
Introduction: So far this semester, we have learned how to
record
the transactions of a business. As part of this course, we, as
instructors, are interested in you also learning about the social
and ethical responsibilities of businesses. I have taken an
assignment that I assembled for a business management class
and
am scaling it down for your class (their paper was a midterm
100
point paper, yours is a 3 page 30 point paper).
3. This paper has several parts that cumulatively will give me
insight as
to how you understand the material. I am putting significantly
more resources here than what you
actually have to do. This is a “cafeteria plan” paper where you
get to watch videos and /or read
articles based on what is of interest to you. I will make
suggestions (highlighted items) as to what I
think you should watch but ultimately, you choose. Some of
you are go getters and will watch most if
not all of the links. Some of you are at the other end of the
spectrum. The effort that you put into this
will determine how much you learn. You are in charge of your
education.
I would like you to write a 3 page paper with proper citations,
double spaced, 12 point Calibri font. Do
the best you can with grammar but I would suggest making an
outline first and putting the subheadings
in your paper. Three pages will go fast so focus on a couple of
ideas, not a recap of what you have
watched. I AM SPECIFICALLY LOOKING FOR YOUR
OPINION OF WHAT ETHICAL BEHAVIOR AND
CORPORATE RESPONSIBLIBITY ARE AND WHAT WE
SHOULD BE DOING ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY. I DO
4. NOT WANT A SUMMARY OF WHAT YOU WATCHED.
ONLY GIVE ME ENOUGH INFORMATION ABOUT
WHAT YOU WATCHED TO SET UP THE SCENE. A RULE
OF THUMB IS THAT FOR EACH PARAGRAPH OF
SUMMARY OF THE VIDEOS YOU SHOULD WRITE 3-4
PARAGRAPHS OF WHAT YOU THINK (DEMONSTRATE
YOUR CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING
SKILLS).
I would like you to use the discussion board for this assignment
to put some blurbs about what you read
and think. Use it like a Facebook page. You don’t have
to be eloquent, just post what you think and let others
respond. More on this later.

5. It is fascinating to watch so I would like you to watch Episode 1
and at least one other episode (episode
12 is very good but in truth, they all are really good). The
episode can be chosen from the drop down
menu off the top bar titled “Watch Episodes” circled in the
image in a green oval.
Sustainability Videos
From a Sustainability class that I took online, I assembled the
following links.

“We are living in a time where human demands far outstrip the
resources available from our
planet. In order for humans to continue a life that resembles or
exceeds our current state, our
systems will need to be transformed. This transformation has
the potential to touch every area
of our lives - food production, energy generation,
transportation, settlement patterns, and
resource allocation.” This video is about sustainability and is a
subject we all need to consider more.
(Note: Understanding the concept of sustainability and its
connection to ethical behavior is the point of this midterm
exam.)

8. Classical Ethical Theories
To win arguments, you have to justify your
reasoning. I put together a whole section of
ethical reasoning that may be of interest to
you. For example, you have all heard of “the
greatest good for the greatest number”
which is a Utilitarian argument. So, for
example, in Hollywood movies you will
constantly see that a few are sacrificed to
save the majority (the astronauts can collide
with the meteor sacrificing themselves so
everyone on earth will be saved). Kant,
Aristotle and others all had ways to think that
they used to justify their views. The videos are all 3 minutes
long and cleverly put together by someone
who talks 90 miles an hours so you have to pay attention while
you watch them. Remember that you
are just trying to learn the basics of what he is trying to say.
They are on my Prezi for a Business 110
class, chapter 4 (see the screen capture). Watch as many as you
9. would like. The web address to go to

A PowerPoint Lecture online
To help you understand the basic moral
orientations that we all have (how we
decide what is right and wrong), there
is a power point by a really, really smart
guy (he’s a PhD). The second slide is
just a summary of the slides to come so
be sure to look at the rest of the slides
to get a bit more detail. You will see a
common phrase in quotes and the
name of the classical theory in green. I
think that if you would take a look at
this for 5 minutes, you would get a
sense that there are a multitude of
ways to justify how you think and what
you do.

Cultural (ethical) Relativism
I also want to add cultural relativism to this paper as it
addresses the international, global, and diversity
issues that are dispersed throughout the chapters. Here is an
excerpt from one of the articles:
“What is ethical relativism? Relativism is the position that all
points of view are equally valid and the
individual determines what is true and relative for them.
Relativism theorizes that truth is different
for different people, not simply that different people believe
different things to be true. While there
are relativists in science and mathematics, ethical relativism is
the most common variety of
relativism. Almost everyone has heard a relativist slogan:
ht for me.
for your culture.
all places.”
Part 2: Discussion Boards
11. Once you have watched as many videos as you have time for
and you feel that you have a good
understanding of the various topics, please post to the
discussion board your thoughts and feelings of
what you have learned. The more videos you watch and the
more articles you read, the more
discussions you can contribute to. The point of the discussion
boards is to discuss. As amazing as that
may seem, students oftentimes just post to “get the points” and
miss the intellectual opportunity to
exchange ideas and thoughts. I want you to use the discussion
boards to “explore” the concepts in the
videos. You will be using this step to help you write your
paper (explained in the next section).
By taking this step seriously, you will develop your ideas and
opinions and solidify your understanding
and learning of the material. Please remember that this is a
college level course and your benefit from
this assignment is linked directly to your effort. You should
know by this point in your educational
career that you are in charge of your learning.
Part 3: the Paper (see due date in Blackboard)
The paper is the culmination of the above two sections. My
expectation is that you will take a topic of
12. your choice from what you have done in the above steps and
develop a position paper honing in or
narrowing in on that topic. The structure of this assignment is
that you will decide what your paper
topic is by doing the first 2 steps. The assignment is purposely
vague so that you can develop and write
an opinion that is important to you and not “what does the
teacher want to read?”. Use the discussion
boards to hammer out ideas!!
Your structure of the paper should clearly state the problem or
situation which includes a thesis
statement, give pertinent details, then justify your position. I
am looking for well-written, scholastic
reflection and the development of your position not a summary
of the content from the above steps. Be
sure that you DO NOT just give me a summary paper as that
will not give you very many points.
~ 5 ~
The paper should be approximately 3 pages long but not to
exceed 5, double spaced, 12 point Calibri
font. Use proper citations (APA or MLA) and include a work
13. cited pages (which does not count towards
the minimum pages required).
Questions to Consider:
You may want to think of some of the answers to the following
questions to help you identify your paper
topic:
1. Do businesses have a moral responsibility to engage in
sustainability practices?
2. Do short-term fixes justify/supersede solving long-term
problems because of today’s economic
world?
3. What will sustainability mean to this generation? To future
generations?
4. Should government (politics) get involved in sustainability
and if so, to what extent?
5. Why is cultural relativism important to today’s business?
6. Why are classical moral reasoning’s important to businesses
today?
_____________________________
I didn’t find a great video on Cultural and Ethical Relativism so
here are some quick-read
snippets and articles if you would like to read them. These
ideas are the basis for the movie
Lost in Translation that you may have seen.
14. Cultural diversity (defined using examples):
The U.S. - a lot of different cultures live in one country
Europe - different cultures live in a small place together (all
countries are really small)
China - here, there are some postindustrial farmers, while there
are also some really hyper-
modern companies and businesses (same for Russia)
Cultural relativism (defined using examples):
While in America, drinking is a really bad crime, in other
countries it is tolerated even for the
youth. So if a 15-year-old drinks in Austria for instance, it's not
such a bad crime.
For some cultures, competition is really bad because this way
you only think for yourself and not
for others. For the Western world, however, competition is
important for us because this way we
can fulfill our needs and wants. We think society can only work
with competition.
Again, in the USA, pirating movies and other products from
15. entertainment industry is a really
bad crime. In other countries, it is tolerated or even legal, like
in Switzerland.

Article 4: What is ethical relativism?
What is ethical relativism?
Relativism is the position that all points of view are equally
valid and the individual determines
what is true and relative for them. Relativism theorizes that
truth is different for different people,
not simply that different people believe different things to be
true. While there are relativists in
science and mathematics, ethical relativism is the most common
variety of relativism. Almost
everyone has heard a relativist slogan:
What’s right for you may not be what’s right for me.
What’s right for my culture won’t necessarily be what’s right
for your culture.
16. No moral principles are true for all people at all times and in all
places.
Ethical relativism represents the position that there are no moral
absolutes, no moral right or
wrong. This position would assert that our morals evolve and
change with social norms over a
period of time. This philosophy allows people to mutate
ethically as the culture, knowledge, and
technology change in society. Slavery is a good example of
ethical relativism. Repeatedly the
value of a human being is determined by a combination of
social preferences and patterns,
experience, emotions, and “rules” that seemed to bring about
the most benefit.
What is ethical relativism from a subjective view? Subjective
ethical relativism supports the
view that the truth of moral principles is relative to individuals.
Whatever you believe is right for
you personally is completely up to you to determine. Subjective
relativism allows you to be
sovereign over the principles that dictate how you live your life.
17. Conventional ethical relativism supports the view that the truth
of moral principles is relative to
cultures. Unlike the subjective view, what is right for you as an
individual is dependant upon
what your particular culture believes is right for you. This view
supports the concept that
whatever culture says is right for you really is right for you.
The culture or society becomes the
highest authority about what is right for each individual within
that society. Conventional
relativism places the individual’s will subordinate to the will of
the cultural majority.
What is ethical relativism from an absolute view? The desire to
have an absolute set of ethics
implies an Absolute Ethics Source which can easily be deduced
as being God. This position
would be opposed to ethical relativism. Instead, the relativist
excludes any religious system
based on absolute morals and would condemn absolute ethics.
God has the power to convey
things to us that are absolute truthful and ethical. Those
absolutes, however, may not be to our
liking or please our subjective tastes. “‘For my thoughts are not
your thoughts, neither are your
18. ways my ways,’ declares the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8).
Relying on an individual’s or a society’s moral choices is
analogous to using our sense of touch
~ 7 ~
to determine the extent of a child's fever. When a child is sick,
a more precise and consistent
measurement is imperative. Our mental growth and the health of
our soul is also worthy of a
more accurate gauge than subjective human feelings.
Conventional relativism implies that all
you have to do is convince a few of your close friends to engage
in some activity that is viewed
as immoral by the rest of society. Suddenly you have now made
the previously unacceptable
activity ethically and morally correct for you. “There is a way
that seems right to a man, but in
the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12). –

19. Article 5: Examples of Cultural Relativism
Jul 6th, 2009
by Anthony Delgado (pastor of a church).
An ethical relativist will consider the moral practices of another
culture to be acceptable to them,
even if their own culture considers it immoral. It is morality
which is relative to the culture. As a
Christian, this raises a lot of issues, but even if we look at it
through the eyes of a cultural
relativist, there are still some gray areas which require
explaining. Consider the following
examples:
1) Dog Eating—In the US this tends to disgust most people.
In many Asian countries, people do, in fact, eat dog. A
cultural relativist would have no problem with this, even if
their own culture would consider this to be cruelty to animals
and therefore immoral. This is ethically relative because dog
eating in Asian countries has no impact on the person in the
US who believes it is immoral.
20. 2) International Slavery—
Let’s say you live in an African village in the 1600’s. Your
tribe recognizes slavery as being an immoral practice.
Another nation does not consider slavery to be immoral, so
they come to your village and haul you off into slavery. This
issue is most certainly not ethically relative since there is a
negative impact on the African tribe from another society which
does not consider the practice
immoral.
3) One more example--
The Inuit live in the northern arctic regions. These are
extremely small tribes, consisting of about
one family. They live under such extreme conditions that they
have difficulty sustaining life. It is
so extreme that any member of the family who cannot perform a
life sustaining duty has to die.

Specifically, many of these tribes will send the “Grandfathers”
out of the house into the
wilderness to die when they are no longer strong enough to
hunt. Similarly “Grandmothers” will
be sent out if there are young girls old enough to perform her
duties in the kitchen. It seems harsh
to most westerners, but they believe it to be essential to their
survival. An ethical relativist has no
choice but to acknowledge it as moral, where any Christian
should know otherwise.

Article 6: Can you give me some examples of cultural
relativism?
Best Answer – (Chosen by Voters from an online question
forum)
The treatment and place of women in areas of fundamental
Islam. No vote, required to wear head
22. to foot robes and so on. This is considered the norm in those
areas and accepted. Therefore that
treatment and position is relative to the society.
Female circumcision is another practice that's accepted by one
culture but not by another. There
have been court cases in the US with the 9th circuit court ruling
that they threat qualified women
for asylum.
The "limits" are whatever a culture accepts. Cultural relativism
states "people should not judge
the behavior of others using the standards of their own culture,
and that each culture must be
analyzed on its own terms"
http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_186168…
"In other words, “right” and “wrong” are culture-specific; what
is considered moral in one
society may be considered immoral in another, and, since no
universal standard of morality
exists, no one has the right to judge another society’s customs."
In short the belief is that there is no right or wrong except as a
23. culture defines it. There are no
universal rights and wrongs.
