Activity 2:
Color Collage
- a sorting and categorizing activity for
Preschool students

Target Age Group:
This project is designed for Preschool students, ages 3 – 4.
It’s a hands-on activity that calls on the creativity and
imagination of young children, while also developing their
organizational skills.
Learning Goals :
Preschool students are generally messy and unorganized, so the overall goal of this activity
is to start developing sorting skills in young learners and teach them about colors. The
sorting and organizing aspect of this activity can be classified as a math lesson, while the
task of color identification can be classified as a science lesson. Students must also utilize
their motor skills and draw on their creativity to assemble their unique color collages. This
project can be completed over 1-2 days.
1. Each student receives a piece of white paper and a handful of assorted objects of
different colors (i.e. paper cutouts, buttons, colored macaroni, pom-poms, etc.)
2. Students sort the objects into color categories. They must also divide their paper into
sections for different colors (they can choose up to 6 colors)
3. students label each section and begin gluing objects into the correct color section.
There must be an equal number of objects in every section
4. students mount their color collages on the wall for their classmates to see. Every
collage will look different, so it will be interesting for students to observe and discuss
the diversity in projects
Activity Instructions:
Teacher’s Role:
In this activity, the teacher’s role is to supervise and
guide students as they complete their own color
collages.
The teacher will assemble an example color collage for
the class, clearly explaining each step as he/she
physically demonstrates it.
After the students have received their supplies, the
teacher will walk around the classroom and assist any
students who are struggling to follow the guidelines.
As students are finishing their color collages, the
teacher will stop by and ask questions about why the
student chose their particular set of colors and objects,
and why they organized their project in such a way.
Learning Outcome & Acquired Skills:
What lessons have students learned?
• how to follow instructions and work independently
• how to differentiate between colors
• how to organize objects based on color and number
• how to verbally explicate their choices
What skills have students developed?
• organizational skills (assigning order to a handful of mixed objects)
• introductory math skills (sorting, categorizing, counting)
• introductory science skills (color differentiation)
• oral speaking skills (explaining their project)
• motor skills (using a ruler, scissors and glue to assemble project)
• creative thinking (deciding how to organize colors and objects)
In Conclusion…
Preschool students have assembled eye-catching collages
and have learned about colors, sorting and counting in the
process. They have also learned how to work
independently, follow guidelines, and interpret these
guidelines creatively. Not only can these skills be applied to
future lessons, but they can also be utilized outside of school.
Because of the colorful content of this activity and hands-on
approach, students have had fun assembling their color
collages and have learned some valuable lessons along the
way.

  • 7. In Conclusion… Preschool students have assembled eye-catching collages and have learned about colors, sorting and counting in the process. They have also learned how to work independently, follow guidelines, and interpret these guidelines creatively. Not only can these skills be applied to future lessons, but they can also be utilized outside of school. Because of the colorful content of this activity and hands-on approach, students have had fun assembling their color collages and have learned some valuable lessons along the way.
