Web Authoring: Protocols, Design Conventions and
Software
Introduction:
In this report I will be discussing about the web authoring in the BTEC
creative media. This will include protocols, design conventions and
lastly software.
Web Authoring:
Web authoring is a design website that you could put in different
aspects in to your own website for example protocols, design
conventions and software.
Protocols
Describe the different protocols found in web design. (URL, Top Level
Doman Name, Doman Name, Domain Name Registrar ETC). Support
your descriptions with examples. For example:
URL: Uniform Resource Locator (URL), formerly known as Universal
Resource Locator, is a technical, Web-related term used in two
distinct meanings.
Here are some examples for URL which you can find either in the
internet or dictionary:
 Wikianswer.com
 Candapost.org
 Google.com
 Yahoo.com
 Msn.com
 Ask jeeves.com
 Ask.com
Top level Domain name: A top-level domain (TLD) is one of the
domains at the highest level in the graded Domain Name System of
the Internet. The top-level domain names are fitted in the root zone
of the name space. For all domains in lower levels, it is the last part of
the domain name, that is, the last label of a fully qualified domain
name.
Here are some examples for Top Level Domain name:
 .com
 .co.uk
 .org
 .edu
 .ac.uk- University use these type of top level domain name
Doman name: A Doman name is the name given to a website. For
example the Domain name of www.google.com is google. This is
registered through a Doman Name Registrar.
Here are some examples for Doman name:
www.Google.com is Google
www.Candapost.org is Candapost
www.Yahoo.com is Yahoo
www.Msn.com is Msn
www.AskJeeves.com is Ask Jeeves
www.Ask.com is Ask
Domain name: A domain name is an ID string that explains a land of
directorial self-rule, expert or control on the Internet. Domain names
are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System
(DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name.
Here are some examples for Domain name:
 Com. or edu-is a top level domain name - is a top level domain
name (TLD).
 Cornell.edu- is a second level domain name (SLD)
 Bigred.cornell.edu- is a third level or three part domain name
 Project.bigred.cornell.edu- is a fourth level or four part domain
part.
Domain Name Registrar ETC: A domain name registrar is a group or
money-making object that achieves the booking of Internet domain
names.
Here are some examples for Domain Name Registrar ETC:
 Ipage
 Justhost.com
 Web.com
 1&1
 Hostpapa
 Network solutions
 Go daddy
 Hub
 Bluehost
 Host Gator
 Register.com
 Domain.com
 Yahoo
 Fasthost.com
 Thewizardsite.com
 Design Conventions
 Discuss the different design conventions behind web authoring.
For each convention you need to use visual examples to
support your points.
 For example when discussing the Rule of Thirds you should
include an image which helps explain what this rule is. When
you talk about Serif and Sans Serif font you should find an
image that shows the differences.
Rules of third:
 The rule of thirds is a guideline which applies to the process of
composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and
photographs
 “When designing text to be used on a website one important
design decision is the use of font. There are two kinds of font:
Serif and Sans Serif. Serif fonts have flicks at the ends of the
letters (See the image below). Sans Serif fonts do not have this
flick. In print, publishing and website design Sans Serif Fonts are
used because they are clearer to see.”
Software
In this section you need to talk about two things:
The two main types of software used to build websites:
The two main types of software that you would find in a computer
would include:
 System software
 Application software
 Text based editors
 And visual based editiors
What HTML is why it is important and includes some examples to
show how it works?
HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is the standard markup
language used to create web pages. Examples<p> is used to make
a new paragraph: example – <p> text paragraph </p>, <br> is used
to make line breaks between text: Example –sentences<br>.”
Here are some more examples of HTML:
 <!DOCTYPE html>
 <HTML>
 <!– created 2010-01-01>
 <head>
 <title>sample</title>
 </head>
 <body>
 <p> voluptatem accusantium totam rem aperiam.</p>
 </body>
 </html>
Conclusion:
In conclusion this report has looked at several different aspects of
Web Authoring, including software, Doman names, rule of third and
lots more.
What I have learnt from this Assignment is about how people make
different websites by using different types of software that actually
helped me learn so many things about the websites. I can use this in
my own work because it will help me learn new things about making
different websites.
