Formative, summative, and self-assessment are three important types of assessment. Formative assessment is used by teachers to improve instruction and support students, summative assessment measures learning at the end of a period of study, and self-assessment allows students to reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning. Together, these different assessment approaches help teachers plan lessons, identify student strengths and weaknesses, and document learning, while also engaging and empowering students.
