When the opportunity arose to take
an Interim Management role I was
at first apprehensive, but quickly
realized how the experience matched
my professional motivation. The
position required me to provide
immediate Communications support
to a team of specialists across the
Asia and Pacific Regions. The remit
extended to guidance at all levels of
the business from strategy to copy
writing, building practice documents,
messaging, and offering counsel to
senior management.
I had held a similar position in
Financial Service, which was probably
why I was at first apprehensive
knowing the depth of such an
undertaking. After meeting the team
and speaking with the person I was to
represent, I excited and grasped the
professional benefits offered.
As a student of Communications,
during my down time I had always
been drawn to TV quiz shows. The
contestants displayed adroit thinking
and provided answers to unheard of
questions as quickly as they were
asked. The opportunity for me to
appear on a show of this vintage
has long past, but to an extent
the challenge of being an Interim
Manager provided me with a place
to demonstrate this capacity: to think
quickly, provide relevant and insightful
guidance, considered counsel and
hands on execution.
As mentioned I enjoy professional
variety and a second advantage to
my placement was the opportunity to
quickly learn a totally new business,
to digest its subject matter and
thoroughly understand how it works
on day one. This deep dive provided
me with a window into a whole new
landscape and I enjoyed making
sense of it all through my own lens. I
was able to add value to established
processes, support the development
of people, and it came with a whole
new set of acronyms!
To anyone looking for a chance to
test their subject matter expertise,
I thoroughly recommend taking
an Interim placement. There is a
level of the unknown that energizes
and professionally challenges you.
Above all the experience of different
communications practices and
processes is invaluable, and one I will
take with me to my next role.
