AS MEDIA STUDIES
WALT
• Understand the structure of the exam
• Understand the content and focus of the exam
• Be able to identify the elements of textual analysis
• Understand the range of representation that could be
focused on in the exam.
REPRESENTATION
• What is meant by the term representations?
• Can you give me some examples of different forms of
representation that might be important in TV Dramas?
• What shows might these feature in?
• Five minutes to consider and answer the questions.
SECTION A
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND REPRESENTATION
• The question is worth 50 marks (half the total for the
exam.
• You will answer a question based on an extract that is
screened.
• The question will focus on how the production
techniques used convey meaning on representation to
the viewer.
• You will have 30 minutes of screening time.
• 45 minutes to write your answer.
EXTRACT SCREENING
You will be allowed two minutes to read the question for
Section A before the extract is screened.
The extract will be screened four times.
• First screening: watch the extract; you must not make
notes.
• Second screening: watch the extract and make notes.
• There will be a brief break for note-making.
• Third and fourth screening: watch the extract and
make notes.
EXAMPLE QUESTION
• Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the
representation of ethnicity using the following:
• Camera shots, angle, movement and composition
• Editing
• Sound
• Mise-en-scène.
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
In the exam you will be asked to analyse identified
elements of film codes, the techniques used in the film.
These could include:
• Camera
• Mise-en-Scène
• Editing
• Sound
CAMERA
To analyse this you need to consider:
• Shots: establishing shot, master shot, close-up, mid-shot, long shot,
wide shot, two-shot, aerial shot, point of view shot, over the shoulder
shot, and variations of these.
• Angle: high angle, low angle, canted angle.
• Movement: pan, tilt, track, dolly, crane, steadicam, hand-held,
zoom, reverse zoom.
• Composition: framing, rule of thirds, depth of field – deep and
shallow focus, focus pulls.
You must use correct terminology when answering this question.

EDITING
To analyse this you need to consider:
• Includes transition of image and sound – continuity and non-
continuity systems.
• Cutting: shot/reverse shot, eyeline match, graphic match,
action match, jump cut, crosscutting, parallel editing,
cutaway; insert.
• Other transitions, dissolve, fade-in, fade-out, wipe,
superimposition, long take, short take, slow motion, ellipsis
and expansion of time, post-production, visual effects.

SOUND
To analyse this you need to consider:
• Diegetic and non-diegetic sound;
synchronous/asynchronous sound; sound effects; sound
motif, sound bridge, dialogue, voiceover, mode of
address/direct address, sound mixing, sound
perspective.
• Soundtrack: score, incidental music, themes and stings,
ambient sound.

MISE-EN-SCENE
• To analyse this you should consider:
• Production design: location, studio, set design, costume
and make-up, properties. Lighting; colour design.
TASK
Describe how mise-en-scene is important within this scene
and creates meaning for the audience, you should
consider all aspects of mise-en-scene including:
• Location Design
• Costume
• Props
• Lighting
• Movement

  • 1. S E C T I O N A – L E S S O N 1 AS MEDIA STUDIES
  • 2. WALT • Understand the structure of the exam • Understand the content and focus of the exam • Be able to identify the elements of textual analysis • Understand the range of representation that could be focused on in the exam.
  • 3. REPRESENTATION • What is meant by the term representations? • Can you give me some examples of different forms of representation that might be important in TV Dramas? • What shows might these feature in? • Five minutes to consider and answer the questions.
  • 4. SECTION A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND REPRESENTATION • The question is worth 50 marks (half the total for the exam. • You will answer a question based on an extract that is screened. • The question will focus on how the production techniques used convey meaning on representation to the viewer. • You will have 30 minutes of screening time. • 45 minutes to write your answer.
  • 5. EXTRACT SCREENING You will be allowed two minutes to read the question for Section A before the extract is screened. The extract will be screened four times. • First screening: watch the extract; you must not make notes. • Second screening: watch the extract and make notes. • There will be a brief break for note-making. • Third and fourth screening: watch the extract and make notes.
  • 6. EXAMPLE QUESTION • Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of ethnicity using the following: • Camera shots, angle, movement and composition • Editing • Sound • Mise-en-scène.
  • 7. TEXTUAL ANALYSIS In the exam you will be asked to analyse identified elements of film codes, the techniques used in the film. These could include: • Camera • Mise-en-Scène • Editing • Sound
  • 8. CAMERA To analyse this you need to consider: • Shots: establishing shot, master shot, close-up, mid-shot, long shot, wide shot, two-shot, aerial shot, point of view shot, over the shoulder shot, and variations of these. • Angle: high angle, low angle, canted angle. • Movement: pan, tilt, track, dolly, crane, steadicam, hand-held, zoom, reverse zoom. • Composition: framing, rule of thirds, depth of field – deep and shallow focus, focus pulls. You must use correct terminology when answering this question. Screening of Video – camera movements

EDITING To analyse this you need to consider: • Includes transition of image and sound – continuity and non- continuity systems. • Cutting: shot/reverse shot, eyeline match, graphic match, action match, jump cut, crosscutting, parallel editing, cutaway; insert. • Other transitions, dissolve, fade-in, fade-out, wipe, superimposition, long take, short take, slow motion, ellipsis and expansion of time, post-production, visual effects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORK8k8_mHyk

  • 13. MISE-EN-SCENE • To analyse this you should consider: • Production design: location, studio, set design, costume and make-up, properties. Lighting; colour design.
