AS IF / AS THOUGH/ LIKE
As if and as though are conjunctions.
As if and as though have a similar meaning.
STRUCTURE:
USES:
1. We use as if and as though to say how someone or something looks, sounds,feels:
EXAMPLES:
 The house looks as if / as though nobody was living in it
 Ann sounds as if / as though she’s got a cold.
 You look as if / as though you haven’t slept well.
 I feel a bit depressed. I don’t feel as if / as though I’ve had a holiday
 You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.
 Is something bothering you? You look as if you haven’t slept in days
Subject + Verb1 + AS IF / AS THOUGH + subject + Verb 2

2. We can say it look/sound /smell as if / or
It look /sound /smell/ as though or like
EXAMPLES:
 It smells as if / as though someone has been smoking in here.
 Tom is very late. It looks as if / as though he is not coming.
 It looks as if they’ve had a shock.
 It looks as though you’ve not met before.
 It doesn’t look as if the economy will improve anytime soon.
 The airplanes were so close together it looked as if they were going to crash.
3. As if or as though is also used with other verbs to describe someone’s behaviour, or
the way someone is acting.
EXAMPLES:
 I can’t stand spending time with Ben. He always acts as if /he’s smarter than everyone.
 Why is Carol ignoring us? She’s acting as if She’s never met us before!
 She told like she had known the problem

4. We use as if / as though and Past Tense with present meaning, to
indicate unreality or improbability or doubt in the present.
EXAMPLES:
 George speaks as if / as though he knew everything. He is nothing but an upstart.
 I cannot put up with your behaviour. You order about as if /as though you were the
boss, which you are not.
 He spends money as if he owned a bank
Note: If you want to emphasize that something is not true, it’s possible to use were instead
of was. In American English it’s common to use were
EXAMPLES:
 She’s behaving as if she were the Queen of England!
(She is not the Queen of England, but she is acting as if she is very important)
 They stared at me as if I were crazy.
(I’m not crazy, but people looked at me like I was crazy.)
 His older brother always treats him as if he were a child.
(He is not a child, but his brother often talks to him like a child.)
 He boarded the airplane as if he were a seasoned traveller.
 She walks as if she were a supermodel.
 She sings as if she were a pop star.
MORE EXAMPLES:

She did not take a shower with
her clothes on
When she came in from the rainstorm, she
looked as if she had taken a shower with
her clothes on
he will be here She spoke as if she wouldn’t be here

5.- We can use both as if and as though followed by a non-finite clause or a
prepositional phrase:
 She moved her lips as if to smile.
 They were shouting as though in panic.
LIKE
Like is often used instead of as if/as though.
EXAMPLES:
 It looks like rain
Notice: Like is followed by a noun object
 It looks like it is going to rain (informal)
 It felt like it could snow at any minute.(informal)
 That house look like it´s going to fall down.
 It look like they aren´t coming.
 She ran like if she was running a marathon.
NOTICE: Like is followed by clause. This use of like is common in informal English, but
is not generally considered appropriate in formal English; as if or as though is preferred.
This is common in American English.

As if and as though have a similar meaning. STRUCTURE: USES: 1. We use as if and as though to say how someone or something looks, sounds,feels: EXAMPLES:  The house looks as if / as though nobody was living in it  Ann sounds as if / as though she’s got a cold.  You look as if / as though you haven’t slept well.  I feel a bit depressed. I don’t feel as if / as though I’ve had a holiday  You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.  Is something bothering you? You look as if you haven’t slept in days Subject + Verb1 + AS IF / AS THOUGH + subject + Verb 2

We can say it look/sound /smell as if / or It look /sound /smell/ as though or like EXAMPLES:  It smells as if / as though someone has been smoking in here.  Tom is very late. It looks as if / as though he is not coming.  It looks as if they’ve had a shock.  It looks as though you’ve not met before.  It doesn’t look as if the economy will improve anytime soon.  The airplanes were so close together it looked as if they were going to crash. 3. As if or as though is also used with other verbs to describe someone’s behaviour, or the way someone is acting. EXAMPLES:  I can’t stand spending time with Ben. He always acts as if /he’s smarter than everyone.  Why is Carol ignoring us? She’s acting as if She’s never met us before!  She told like she had known the problem

We use as if / as though and Past Tense with present meaning, to indicate unreality or improbability or doubt in the present. EXAMPLES:  George speaks as if / as though he knew everything. He is nothing but an upstart.  I cannot put up with your behaviour. You order about as if /as though you were the boss, which you are not.  He spends money as if he owned a bank Note: If you want to emphasize that something is not true, it’s possible to use were instead of was. In American English it’s common to use were EXAMPLES:  She’s behaving as if she were the Queen of England! (She is not the Queen of England, but she is acting as if she is very important)  They stared at me as if I were crazy. (I’m not crazy, but people looked at me like I was crazy.)  His older brother always treats him as if he were a child. (He is not a child, but his brother often talks to him like a child.)  He boarded the airplane as if he were a seasoned traveller.  She walks as if she were a supermodel.  She sings as if she were a pop star. MORE EXAMPLES: “True “ statement (fact) Verb form after as if/as though He is not a child She talked to him as if he were a child She did not take a shower with her clothes on When she came in from the rainstorm, she looked as if she had taken a shower with her clothes on he will be here She spoke as if she wouldn’t be here

LIKE Like is often used instead of as if/as though. EXAMPLES:  It looks like rain Notice: Like is followed by a noun object  It looks like it is going to rain (informal)  It felt like it could snow at any minute.(informal)  That house look like it´s going to fall down.  It look like they aren´t coming.  She ran like if she was running a marathon. NOTICE: Like is followed by clause. This use of like is common in informal English, but is not generally considered appropriate in formal English; as if or as though is preferred. This is common in American English.
