Magazine Articles

All magazine articles follow a particular framework or structure.

Freddie Lucas

Headline:

Newest baby to the runway Freddie Lucas struts his stuff for ‘Vain’

All stories have a headline, which gives the reader an idea of what the article is about. Headlines in music magazines often use puns or other
techniques, such as alliteration, to captivate their audience.

Introduction:

As the first paragraph in an article, the introduction is very important. Its contents tell the reader in more detail what the article is about.
Research into how people read magazines shows that most people read the headline first, followed by the first paragraph of the story. If the
introduction is not interesting then most people will to continue reading the article. The first paragraph is often known as a kicker printed in a
bold font.

I’m just sitting here today with the next big thing on the runway Freddie Lucas. Runway model overnight after wowing everyone last
month at London fashion week. Magazines, newspapers billboards are plastered with his pictures and everyone who’s anyone
knows this handsome young English boys name by now. He’s so lovely and a bit cheeky I feel like I’m talking to my little brother,
he’s so cute. Doing shoots at the age of 11 for big brands such as H&M and River Island his name wasn’t known just his face. After
taking a few years of after this to concentrate on school work at private school Bradley Manor in London, he would of never of
thought he would have such a big comeback at the age of 14.
Features of magazine articles

   Informal language
   Use of puns
   Use of alliteration
   Exaggeration for effect
   Slang
   Colloquial language (chatty)
   Informal names used
   Short, snappy sentences
   Heightened language (over the top)
Adjectives are often exciting and risque
There is a focus upon appearance/style
Frequent use of elision e.g. won’t, don’t. This is another informal technique

Task:

Write an 1000 word article about a made up band or artist or if you are doing a fashion magazine this need to be about an actor/actress– the
article needs to be based on whoever you are going to use to model on your front cover.

The easiest way to do this is by following this format.

Introduction: 100 words – give a bit of history about this person or group

Then base the rest of article as a question and answer piece.
8 questions all with 100 words answers

Ask 8 questions and make up possible answers such as what are your main musical influences? What inspires you to write? Wha’ts been the
high point of your career to date? Or if you basing it on an actor, who has been the best director you have worked with or what are your
favourite films?

Final comments –100 words - you general thoughts about the person, were they nice to interview and do you expect big things in their future

Questions:

 1. How does it feel after your career blowing up in only a year?

It feels amazing I would have never expected anything like this. My friends and family are so supportive now not all of them enjoy being chased by the
paparazzi though (laughs). When I started modelling at the age of 11 it was for small company’s or shoots which I thought were the real thing, being so
young I thought I’d made it then and I loved every second of it. After doing that every now and then I had a bit of a break to concentrate on school and
thinking about career options for when I was older other than modelling because my parents didn’t want me to experience too much all at once and get
overwhelmed. Then at the still very young age of 14 I’m here today talking to the writers of Vain and I’m so glad I never gave up on my passion. This past
year has been worth all the hard work.

 2. Were lucky today, you do know every magazine wants you on their cover right?

Well thank-you I’m still trying to take it all in. I’m overwhelmed and being so young sometimes it’s hard to believe. This past year has gone so fast and I’m so
lucky that so many people do want me on their magazine. Vain is always one that I’ve read though and I was so excited when you rang me up to come in for
an interview.

 3. What did you think of the outfits you wore designed by ‘Jones American stylist at London fashion week?

 4. Describe your look to us today?
 5. We hear you had an interesting photo shoot last week want to spill any gossip on why exactly?
6. How was it spending a day with the Diva girls?
7. Have you ever thought about designing?
8. I bet your glad your turned 16 this year so you was just old enough for the London fashion week?
