What is Art and Not Art?
What is Art
❑ To explore further, Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements to appeal to the senses or emotions. It encompasses various human activities,
creations, and forms of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and painting.
What is not art
❑ Anything not created with the sole objective of being art is not considered art. This includes, but is not limited to, things like:
Functional objects (e.g., furniture, utensils)
Natural objects (e.g., rocks, leaves)
Photographs (unless they are part of an artistic project)
Commercial products (e.g., advertisements, packaging)
• Film (Digital arts/analog)
• A film – also called a movie, motion picture, moving picture, picture, photoplay or (slang) flick – is a work of visual art that simulates experiences and otherwise
communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty, or atmosphere through the use of moving images.
• Digital art is a term given to artistic work that employs digital technology during the creation or presentation. For example, the digital arts are part of the animation,
visual effects, and video game industries. Digital arts were created in the 1960s, and since then, the term has gone by several names, such as computer or multimedia
art. Additionally, the craft is categorized under a more considerable distinction called new media art. You can find digital art examples in several productions, and in the
digital entertainment industry, digital arts include movies, TV series, video games, and animation.
Here are the different types of Art which you will search for your assignment, provide examples of each.
❑ Types of Art:
• Visual arts (2D, 3D)
The visual arts are art forms that create works that are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts,
photography, video, film making and architecture.
• Two-dimensional art refers to any form of visual art that exists in two dimensions. 2D art forms can include drawings, paintings, prints, and photographs.
• Three-dimensional art is a type of art done in three dimensions. Sculptures, paintings, sketches, and photographs are just some of how this sort of art can be
shown.
• Analog art-is any art where the material making the art is manipulated by hand, like paint. You can control any portion of it. Digital is constituted of many individual
pieces of electronic information--such as pixels, in the case of digital photography--which cannot be further broken down.
❑ Performance art
• Artworks that are created through actions performed by the artist or other participants, which may be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted.
❑ Poetry-performance
• Performance poetry, also known as spoken word poetry, is a dynamic form of artistic expression that combines elements of poetry, storytelling, and
performance. It is meant to be performed live in front of an audience, with emphasis on vocal delivery, gestures, and body language.
Performance poetry often addresses social and personal issues and can be highly engaging and emotionally charged. Through rhythm, intonation, and
dramatic presentation, performers bring their words to life, creating a unique and captivating experience for both the poet and the audience.
❑ Dance
• Dance is a performing art form consisting of sequences of movement, either improvised or purposefully selected. This movement has aesthetic and often
symbolic value. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin. An
important distinction is to be drawn between the contexts of theatrical and participatory dance, although these two categories are not always completely
separate; both may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, martial, or sacred/liturgical. Other forms of human movement are
sometimes said to have a dance-like quality, including martial arts, gymnastics, cheerleading, figure skating, synchronized swimming, marching bands, and
many other forms of athletics.
❑ Film
• A film – also called a movie, motion picture, moving picture, picture, photoplay or (slang) flick – is a work of visual art that simulates experiences and otherwise
communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty, or atmosphere through the use of moving images. These images are generally accompanied by sound
and, more rarely, other sensory stimulations.[1] The word “cinema”, short for cinematography, is often used to refer to filmmaking and the film industry, and the art
form that is the result of it. A Trip to the Moon, 1902. The film Is considered to be a turning point in narrative and sci-fi film development.
❑ Literary
• The “literary arts” are what one might classify more along the lines of literature, including poetry and prose. These works can range from epic poems to epistolary
novels to articles to comics.
The ingredients that go into sentences, paragraphs, and pages that make up literary works fall under the heading of “language arts.” The term “language arts” covers
just about anything having to do with language from an essay on linguistics to newspaper articles to translation studies and beyond.
❑ Theater
• Theatre is a collaborative art form which combines words, voice, movement and visu elements to express meaning. Al The field of theatre encompasses not only live
improvised and scripted work, but also dramatic forms such as film, television and other electronic media. Importance in citizens’ lives. Due to the increasingly
pervasive influence of contemporary theatrical media, theatre has enormous im It is not possible for students to achieve media literacy without understanding and
having hands-on experience with theatre. And resolution of fundamental human issues, and is build Theatre is about the examination t on understand interactions
between people.
❑ Applied Arts (Fashion, furniture)
• Applied arts is a broad subject area that combines aesthetics, design, consumer need, and finding practical solutions to problems. It’s the place where design and
decoration come together to create objects and ideas that are both useful and beautiful. Specific areas of study include graphic design, fashion design, architecture,
automotive design, advertising, and ceramics. The applied artist must take a more objective approach, tailoring their aesthetic choice to match the needs of a client,
consumer, or a business. And because applied arts directly engage with the market economy, there are plenty of job opportunities and career paths for qualified
students. So if you’re looking for a way to earn a decent salary while still flexing those creative muscles, opting for an applied arts course is an excellent place to start
your journey. Here’s why you should think about studying the applied arts.

  • 2. What is Art and Not Art? What is Art ❑ To explore further, Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements to appeal to the senses or emotions. It encompasses various human activities, creations, and forms of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and painting. What is not art ❑ Anything not created with the sole objective of being art is not considered art. This includes, but is not limited to, things like: Functional objects (e.g., furniture, utensils) Natural objects (e.g., rocks, leaves) Photographs (unless they are part of an artistic project) Commercial products (e.g., advertisements, packaging)
  • 3. • Film (Digital arts/analog) • A film – also called a movie, motion picture, moving picture, picture, photoplay or (slang) flick – is a work of visual art that simulates experiences and otherwise communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty, or atmosphere through the use of moving images. • Digital art is a term given to artistic work that employs digital technology during the creation or presentation. For example, the digital arts are part of the animation, visual effects, and video game industries. Digital arts were created in the 1960s, and since then, the term has gone by several names, such as computer or multimedia art. Additionally, the craft is categorized under a more considerable distinction called new media art. You can find digital art examples in several productions, and in the digital entertainment industry, digital arts include movies, TV series, video games, and animation. Here are the different types of Art which you will search for your assignment, provide examples of each. ❑ Types of Art: • Visual arts (2D, 3D) The visual arts are art forms that create works that are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, film making and architecture. • Two-dimensional art refers to any form of visual art that exists in two dimensions. 2D art forms can include drawings, paintings, prints, and photographs. • Three-dimensional art is a type of art done in three dimensions. Sculptures, paintings, sketches, and photographs are just some of how this sort of art can be shown.
  • 4. • Analog art-is any art where the material making the art is manipulated by hand, like paint. You can control any portion of it. Digital is constituted of many individual pieces of electronic information--such as pixels, in the case of digital photography--which cannot be further broken down. ❑ Performance art • Artworks that are created through actions performed by the artist or other participants, which may be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted. ❑ Poetry-performance • Performance poetry, also known as spoken word poetry, is a dynamic form of artistic expression that combines elements of poetry, storytelling, and performance. It is meant to be performed live in front of an audience, with emphasis on vocal delivery, gestures, and body language. Performance poetry often addresses social and personal issues and can be highly engaging and emotionally charged. Through rhythm, intonation, and dramatic presentation, performers bring their words to life, creating a unique and captivating experience for both the poet and the audience.
  • 5. ❑ Dance • Dance is a performing art form consisting of sequences of movement, either improvised or purposefully selected. This movement has aesthetic and often symbolic value. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin.
