It begins by describing the author's observations of street art in the city and their interest in understanding graffiti as a creative art form rather than mere vandalism. The document then traces the origins of graffiti in Philadelphia in the 1960s where it was associated with gangs and an expression of territorialism. When graffiti emerged in New York City via subway taggers in the 1970s, it was similarly viewed negatively. However, graffiti matured and developed artistic merit. By the 1980s, graffiti had grown in recognition abroad and in art galleries, moving from its gang origins to an expression worthy of praise. Today, graffiti is
Joaquin Sorolla was a Spanish painter born in 1863 in Valencia, Spain. He showed an early passion for art despite his uncle's attempts to teach him locksmithing. He studied art in Valencia and Madrid, and received a grant enabling him to study paintings in Rome and Paris. Sorolla married in 1888 and had three children by 1895. He was influenced by Impressionism and fused it with his classical training, producing joyous paintings featuring sunlight and people in places like his native Valencia. Some of his most famous works include Beach Promenade from 1909 and En La Yola from 1910, both capturing scenes in natural colors with soft edges reflecting his Impressionist style.
This document provides biographical information on several famous Spanish creators and artists, including Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Montserrat Caballé, Antoni Gaudí, and Miguel de Cervantes. It details their dates of birth and death, nationalities, and professional activities. For each person, it provides 1-2 paragraphs summarizing their artistic accomplishments and impact, with Salvador Dalí noted for his surrealist paintings like The Persistence of Memory, Joan Miró influencing surrealism through his dreamlike works, and Montserrat Caballé achieving international success as one of the greatest opera sopranos of the 20th century.
“Everything is beautiful. Pop is everything.”- One of Any Warhol’s famous quotes rightly explains the rage with which Pop Art had taken over the world. The pop art movement, started in the mid-1950s has redefined the visuals of art and given it a whole new dimension. Following the abstract art popularity, pop art emerged as a complete contrast to the former.
The Whitehouse Projects began 5 years ago in Peru when founder Jim Cossio witnessed street artists creating works directly on gallery walls that would later be painted over. This inspired Cossio to create traveling art events where street and fine artists create works during the event that are then available for purchase through a silent auction. Any unsold works are painted over at the end of the night. The events bring different types of artists together and allow attendees to observe the art creation process and potentially purchase works, with proceeds going to charity. Whitehouse Projects has expanded and will be holding events in several US cities in 2014-2015.
From cave paintings 40,000 years ago to modern street art, graffiti has served as a means of expression and communication. It started as vandalism in Philadelphia in the 1960s but has evolved into a recognized art form. However, opinions on graffiti vary - some see it as a way to beautify communities, while others view it as visual clutter that should not be allowed without permission. Legalizing certain graffiti could help social groups feel included in communities while also saving governments money spent on removal.
