Child art develops through distinct stages from scribbling to realism as the child ages. There are four main stages: the scribble stage from ages 2-4 where children scribble without intent to represent objects; the pre-symbolism stage around age 3 where simple figures are combined; the symbolism stage around age 5 where basic shapes represent objects; and the transitional stage around age 9 where children try to meet adult standards before entering the final realism stage where art resembles that of adults by age 12. Art plays an important role in child development by supporting motor skills, language, decision making, visual learning, inventiveness, cultural awareness, and improved academic performance.
