Four Stages (David Kolb) Reflection on my practicum period
1- What did I do?
CONCRETE EXPERIENCE
Children kept engaged and entertained with a
variety of activities.I encouraged themto take
part in these activities.Children’s comprehension
and communication skills increased with the help
of these kinds activities. In my first lesson, I used
a famous family such as “The Simpsons” to teach
family members. It helps me to hold children’s
attention and they kept interested as they usually
watch this cartoon on TV. Active games and
drawings for children were so funny to learn
vocabulary.They were really enthusiastic
because they are not used to doing games. I
taught family members by showing power points,
posters, flashcards and videos. In this way,
lessons could be fun and children could perform
very well. It was important to get them engaged
2. in and positive in my classes. I chose practice
activities that were simple and easy to understand
and also easy to explain because they are
learning English for the first time and they do not
speak English.I also tried to involve children and
give them positive feedback to keep them
motivated.Lessons were bright and enjoyable.
The way that I related to children and how
children related to me was really important.I
know how important rapport is between teachers
and children. It’s significant how teachers and
students relate to each other. I can say that it’s
part of success.
2- How did I do it?
REFLECTIVE OBSERVATION
During my fourth lessons, I spoke English all the
time. They speak Spanish the whole class because
their teacher speaks Spanish. Anyway, they could
have the possibility to listen and speak English
during this period. I used body movements, facial
expressions and gestures to communicate with
them. Demonstration was my best option so it was
not a difficult task; they could follow me and
understand my commands and instructions.
At the beginning,I was terrified because I thought
that it was difficult to teach them as they are used
to doing one activity the whole hour. During my
observation period,Icould see that they only work
with the book and sometimes they play with some
words to revise vocabulary but only on the board.
So, I gave children the opportunity to learn in a
3. different way. Getting children to communicate
with me and their classmates in a positive creative
environment was a big challenge for me. It’s really
important to create a positive relationship and of
course, a positive learning atmosphere.
Another aspect to highlight is that children were
motivated when they participated in pair work or
group work. I could see that language was best
learnt through collaboration and communication
among children. They liked sharing their works.
They could help each other and worked different
activities such as playing, writings, interviews,
making comments about their family for example.
3- What can I do differently?
ABSTRACT CONCEPTUALISATION
I should manage disruptive behaviour in the
classroom. If I were the teacher of the course, I
think that I could set up clear and simple rules at
the beginning of the year. Children should know
what is acceptable and what is not in a positive
way. For example, making posters which can be
displayed on the wall in the classroom. So, It’s
easier to focus on rules and routines. It would help
me to reduce misbehaviour during the lesson.
There are many things to take into account at the
moment of the lesson. For example, I need to
implement strategies to control noisy levels.
Sometimes, classroom noise can mean productive
learning. When teachers plan activities that have
4. the potential to be very noise,we need to know how
to control the noise. A good idea could be for
example, clap with my hands, maybe it’s a
classical strategy to get children’s attention but it
could be useful. Another strategy could be going
to the front of the room, or walking around the
class clapping my hands. I also can ask for
response using the phrase “stop, look, and listen”
(clapping my hands).
4- What plan should I implement?
ACTIVE EXPERIMENTATION
I do believe that I have to focus on children’s
interests all the time. Learning must have fun
because children engage in learning. We as
teachers must help children to become a good
learner, encourage them to explore interesting
topics that fascinate them.
Another aspect to mention is that we need to
introduce and encourage different types of
learning. We know that every child has learning
preferences. There are some children that have a
dominant learning style while others learn using a
mix of different styles. So, helping children to
discover his preferred learning styles will improve
their learning.
It’s important to consider that we also should
share
our motivation and enthusiasmall the time. If
children see that we are enthusiastic about
learning,they become enthusiastic about learning
5. English. We help them that learning is a journey
of
exciting new discoveries. Things really change
through joy and excitement learning.
It’s important to recognize children’s
achievements. As it’s the first time they learn
English,they need constant positive reinforcement
to keep them motivated to learn and challenge
themselves to do better. We have to
use positive reinforcement as a tool to motivate
learning our children.
Finally,we need to encourage children to open
communication. It’s important to create a good
atmosphere where they feel comfortable
expressing their likes or dislikes. We must share
their feelings and opinions in the process of
learning. It’s important to work with each child
to ensure their success.
