Four Stages (David Kolb) Reflection on my practicum period
1- What did I do?
CONCRETE EXPERIENCE
During my four lessons at secondary level, I
presented materials using different kinds of
techniques such as written, oral, games, a video
and power point presentations. I used props and
visual aids (posters and pictures cards) in order
to get students’ attention when I had to present or
review concepts.I adapted the material to fit
students’ needs, preferences and addressed
specific learning goals.I integrated my computer
in my classes as a valuable teaching tool for
students of this level. It was something new for my
students as they do not work with videos or power
point presentations during their English classes.
They have a separate section in their folders in
which they only write theory with short examples
and another section part with exercises. They
2. really appreciated all the material that I prepared
for them. I think that the more interest I show in
my material, the more likely students see value in
it. Regarding teaching grammar, I presented
grammar in both form and meaning.I gave short
explanations by giving clear examples. I tried not
to give many rules or examples because students
could get confused as their linguistic level of
English was beginners. So, I provided activities to
make students use a certain grammar point. I
asked students to provide some examples by their
own (deductive reasoning) and Ichecked if they
had understood. I also encouraged students to
write their answers on the board. It was really
motivating. In my second lesson, I used a game
with past simple tense to make grammar practice
funnier. According to writing,I supported and
encouraged students to write. Then, I let them
read their writings sharing with the whole class.
It was a great challenge as they never read aloud
their activities/writings during their classes.
Anyway, they did it! In that case, I reinforced
their right answers and I tried to be tactful when
correcting their mistakes. Finally,I gave
supportive and informative feedback.For
example, writing very short comments on what
was good and what they had to be redone.
2- How did I do it?
REFLECTIVE OBSERVATION
Students speak English during their English
classes. As at kindergarten and primary level, I
3. used body movements and facial expressions. I
also created an opportunity for simple
communication when students started asking
about my course of studies and my life. We talked
in a natural and funny way. I also practised and
encouraged all common classrooms questions.
For example: “Any questions?” “Do you need
help?” “Do you agree?” “Is it right?” “Can I
clean the board?” “Ready?” etc.
One of the girls was an introverted student so she
could speak with her partner in my speaking
activities. For me, it was a great achievement!
When I started my secondary period, I must
confess that I was extremely nervous because I
thought that teaching to adolescents would be
difficult. But, they welcomed me with open arms.
So, in that moment I could relax a bit more and I
changed my attitude immediately. I was positive
that it’s the most important tool to create a
positive classroom atmosphere. In my opinion,
the teacher should be a positive role model for
students. Adolescents need positive social skills
such as empathy, tolerance, patience and effective
communication as they are in a period of
changes. Not also I showed a positive attitude but
also I showed respect for them and their
environment.I tried to involve students actively in
my activities. I made my lessons as interactive
and dynamic as possible to keep my students
involved in learning. Finally, I included different
4. types of activities to practise the target language
as much as possible.
3- What can I do differently?
ABSTRACT CONCEPTUALISATION
I should include more motivating activities in my
lesson plans. For example: “music”. We know
that adolescents love listening to music a lot.
Most of the songs are in English so it can be a
source of highly motivating activities. Ithink that,
teenagers would really appreciate it if I make the
effort to find out what they like listening to. To get
this information, it would be interesting to find
out favourite bands for example. It’s important to
have a variety of activities to use with songs.
Students get involved easily in creating activities
to use their favourite songs. I think that working
on music can really change the atmosphere of a
classroom. Also, I can use video clips, they have
always an enormous potential in the language
class. I need to find ways to motivate teens. I
think that it’s not an impossible task. By
incorporating what they like into what we do, we
can start to build the bridges that we need to
connect with them as language learners.
4- What plan should I implement?
ACTIVE EXPERIMENTATION
I think that adolescents want to identify with
what they are learning.Technology and current
events are great tools that they love it. So I should
exploit them in my classroom. The use of
technology is an effective way to connect our
students with different learning styles.
If I integrate technology students will stay
5. engaged.
We know that adolescents have been using their
Mobile devices like tablets or cell phones to play
And learn. To sum up, I can combine technology
With traditional teaching to enhance learning
Experiences and create new opportunities to
Motivate our students. We also need to use a
variety of activities so they do not get bored.
