This document provides an introduction to aromatic chemistry and benzene compounds. It defines arenes as aromatic hydrocarbons containing one or more benzene rings. Benzene itself is represented by the formula C6H6, where a ring of 6 carbon atoms is bonded to a hydrogen atom on each carbon. When a hydrogen is replaced on the benzene ring, the compound takes the name of the replacing group followed by "benzene", such as chlorobenzene. Numbering positions on rings with multiple groups is also discussed.
