Setting Analysis Of To Build A Fire By Jack London
Setting Analysis of To Build A Fire Today, children are always told to live for the moment. Not
to worry about the little things and to live as if there will be no tomorrow. Almost as if what is
done today will not affect tomorrow. In reality, every little thing people do will impact them in
some type of way. For every choice or decision someone makes, there is a consequence that
comes with it. This consequence can be major, minor, good, or bad. In Jack London s short story
To Build A Fire , readers are taken along on a journey with a naive man and his dog as they battle
the extreme winter conditions of the Yukon. One of the driving forces to the story s plot is the
harsh setting in which this journey takes place. The setting enforces the ominous mood of the
story as well as reveals information about the man. While doing so, the setting also conveys the
idea that with every decision or action there is a consequence that must be faced. The setting of
To Build A Fire is not one that is warm and inviting. Instead, it is one that is frigid and
frightening. Many layers of snow on the surface make it seem as if there is an intangible pall over
the face of things (London 569). For miles all that can be seen is a sheet of white and the
dreariness of the vacant land. The temperature is well in the negatives and the winds are strong. The
sun has not been out in days. With every step the man takes, nature throws another obstacle into his
path. This is an environment that is

Role Of Hr Development And Change Management Essay
ROLE OF HR IN DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT
Development and Change Management is about people and their capacity to adapt to change. The
Human Resources department has a very vital role in any development and change management
program. There HR department has to ensure are first and foremost kept motivated all the time.
This facilitates smooth change towards development.
First, there is a need to recruit right and relevant people for the job. The attitude of these people
should be open and flexible geared towards thinking out of the box which can bring fresh
perspectives at the service of the company.
There is a constant need to look for people who can think non linearly and adopt unconventional
ways in working and achieving the goal. They need to be encouraged and empowered so that they
in turn become and act as change agents . This is a key element in achieving development and
change. The HR department should strive to mentor and nurture talent. There should be a constant
lookout for people who act as catalysts for change and who can motivate other employees to
participate in development and initiate change. Supportive management with supportive working
environment speeds up this process. Care to be taken that those who contribute towards
development and change should be suitably rewarded and adequately recognized which serves as
an added incentive which further serves as a boost.
The Human Resources department should be viewed much more than a supportive

Stress in Todays Society
Page 1
Stress is a killer. There is doubt that stress can cause health problems. Daily stressors lead into
major health problems. Therefore if you can manage your daily stress you can promote a healthier
life. The American Medial Association defines stress, as being any disruptions of a person s
mental and physical well being. (4.) My position is that if you balance the stress in your life you
can live healthier and prevent certain sicknesses. Not all stress is bad for your body. It is good to
have some stress in your life. However, too much stress in your life can be harmful. Stress seems
to come mostly from psychological threats instead of physical ones. Stress varies from person to
person. For college students time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many ways to reduce or handle stress in your life. The easiest and one of the healthiest
antidotes for stress is laughter. Just smiling helps because it releases blood flow to the brain and
endorphins are released. (4.) This gives a sense of well being. Some other simple techniques are
doing uninterrupted breathing. Another stressor is lack of sleep. Therefore break the stress
sleeplessness cycle. You can help relieve your sleep problem by developing a daily sleep routine
and don t drink alcohol or caffeine before bed. Another thing is to reserve your bedroom for
sleeping and sex only. (4.) Writing down your feeling in a diary may help relieve emotional
stress. (4.) Time management is a major way to reduce stress. If you can keep a schedule of the
things you need to do and when you have to do them, this can open time for yourself. Try to
focus on the important task and then do the little things. (3.) Many stress experts suggest that
you begin your fight against stress by defining your values. (4.) Don t think that everything has
to be perfect. If you are a perfectionist you fuel a variety of stress producing qualities. (4.) If your
over stressed slow down. Try moving, talking and behaving in a relaxed, slower manner. (4.)
Some tips on how to slow down is to drive slower than usual. Wait five minutes in the driveway
before going in the house. All you need to do is relax and ease into the

The Equalizer Film Analysis
In the film The Equalizer , a thriller/action directed by Antoine Fuqua, there are several key scenes
that build the storyline for the movie, however there was one scene that engaged my attention and
I found had great relevance as I studied this film. It is the first fight scene where Robert McCall
fights a Russian group holed up in a hotel room. Significant aspects that I noticed Fuqua use in this
scene were the characters actions, cameratechniques and lighting. I feel as though these 3
techniques were the most important and the most effective. Fuqua cleverly utilised these techniques
in this scene which helped the audienceto understand the characters emotion and to help build
tension leading up to the fight.
I feel that the director s purpose of this scene is to expose and shed a little light upon Robert and
how he approaches tasks as well as the way he thinks and acts in these situations. One example
Fuqua has attempted to portray in this scene is how Robert s mind works differently to most
other people and this is shown when we see Robert opening and closing the door 3 times before
finally locking it behind him. This shows myself and the audience that Robert is some sort of
perfectionist and may have some kind of O.C.D. Locking it behind him tells me that he is
extremely confident in his own abilities. I definitely wouldn t enter the room let alone go in and
lock the door. Robert, throughout the whole scene, is very calm and patient. As he is standing at

Imperialism And Education
Throughout this semester, all of the novels and poetry that we have read have a great deal to do
with an individual s personal education. Within the last two works, The Rubaiyat of Omar
Khayyam and The Jungle Book, present the importance of education in the form of not only
enlightenment, but also as a tool to ensure clarity of mind and ambitions. In a current sense, we are
dealing with the same sort of issues in education. This can in a conceptual way be applied to the
difficult idea of combining and finding a balance between the traditional form of teaching with the
technology advanced form of education that we are beginning to find normal, in contrast with the
concept of British imperialism blending with the previous Indian culture to give... Show more

This is simply an irrational apprehension toward people of different races or countries than your
own. Although the British see India simply as a land to colonize, they are resistant to even
contemplating the idea of accepting some of the Indian traditions. The current pieties of the
Indian culture were not only decimated, but were being suppressed. We also see this form of
resistance in education as well. The state now requires standards of technology to be included in
every lesson plan that it taught. For traditional teachers who have no experience with much of
the technology, this can be overwhelming and they resist it on all fronts because they do not
understand it. We see this concept of the expectation for us to drop the traditional ideals or
techniques that we know well for something that is supposedly better within the jungle in the
story The Miracle of Purun Bhagat: He had been, as the Old Law recommends, twenty years a
youth, twenty years a fighter though he had never carried a weapon in his life and twenty years
the head of a household. He had used his wealth and his power for what he known both to be
worth; he had taken honor when it came his way; he had seen men and cities far and near, and
men and cities had stood up and honored him. Now he would let these things go, as a man drops

Why Did Calypso Let Odysseus Leave
Calypso was the woman who saved Odysseus she kept him in her island for seven years she
made him his lover, but he never felt the same way about her he always would think about the
day that he would go home to his wife and son. The only reason that Calypso let Odysseus leave
was because Zeus he sent the messenger of the gods to tell her to let Odysseusgo home to his people
and wife. Calypso was fearful of zeus power at the same time she was angry that she has to let go of
Odysseus since she was the one who saved his life Calypso said to Hermes that Gods are jealous of
her happiness, but she still helped Odysseus to build a boat and gave him food for his journey.

The Ambassador Program is Necessary Because People Must...
Insightful Guides
When you were younger, did you ever get separated from your parent and not know what to do
or whom to go to for assistance, and because you didn t know what to do you just wandered
aimlessly around? I know I have, and that s what a lot of people who are lost like that do. In fact,
that happens a lot here with new students. Yes, there are the peer helpers but that only gives the
new student one guide for one day. And that guide doesn t even show them their classes, they take
them to the classes they have and then the new student, the very next day, is on their own to find
their own way. But wouldn t it be great if they knew someone, or multiple people who could help
them on the spot, almost anytime during the school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their independence will be not only in finding their way around but also in knowing where to
locate things and who people are. Now many people argue they re in middle school, and they re
older now, meaning we have to be independent anyway. But even though we are older, that doesn
t mean we always know where things are or we always know what to do. That s like saying a
newborn can survive without caretaker. It s as simple as this; newborns know very little about the
world and how it works as to new students knowing very little about new schools and how they
work. So regardless of maturity or age, people need to be dependent before they can be
independent, and the ambassador program is a good form of that temporary dependence.
Another benefit of the ambassador program would be that it would allow new students to
become comfortable and gain a form of confidence. It s important for new student/staff to be
comfortable because if they weren t think of how difficult it would be for them to focus not only
in class but just in general. And when students become comfortable and confident enough, that s
when they will be able to focus on things like work. But it s often thought that being comfortable
shouldn t prioritize over classes and what matters is getting work done. But what most don t
realize is that it s virtually impossible for people like us to focus on work if we feel out of place in
our everyday environment. But this program would allow

They were free to govern their own course of development, however some of them had their own
identity in this new country. During that time the new born America has no history and tradition
while Europe has a great one assembled for thousands of years. In order to solve this problem,
Irving borrows an old European story to make it take place in America. This story related to the
Dutch colonists. The quote On the other side he looked down into the deep mountain glen, wild,
lonely, and shagged, the bottom filled with fragments from the impending cliffs, and scarily lighted
by the reflected rays of the setting sun. (Norton Anthology American Literature, page 33). He

show that America has formed its own identity, no one can cut its connection with Europe. When
America was still under arbitrary of the British rule, some people still cannot cut the blood
relationship with Europe. Therefore, the American identity was unable to see by their relationship
with Europe since then.
Rip wan Winkle was a great man. He would love to help people in the community. After being
asleep for twenty years and due to the drinking habit he had no chance to engaged in the social and
political change in the country. I think that when he stop sleeping and woke up he found that

Flash Drive Advantages And Disadvantages
What is a USB Flash Drive? The term USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and is used to define
a special kind of connection between a computer and other electronic devices. The connections
can serve different purposes ranging from power supply to communication. A USB flash drive
is a storage device that acts as a portable hard drive, but generally has a much more limited
capability in comparison. As mentioned, their purpose is to store digital information and to
transfer information between systems. Other popular names used for these devices include;
USB drive, USB stick, thumb drive and memory stick. Advantages of using USBs (at least 4)
USBs have an assortment of advantages associated with them. They are extremely portable,
allowing for information to be easily carried around and relocated. This can go a long way for
jobs and school projects, as it allows work to be taken home for further use. Another great
advantage is their ease of use, as they are extremely simple to use and are extremely fast at
storing information. This could come in handy in emergencies where information needs to be
saved urgently. An example of this, although extreme, would be in the case of an evacuation,
whether that is a fire or some other emergency. This work could quickly be stored onto a USB so
it is saved. USBs are also extremely compatible, as most modern computers are designed to include
USB access. This allows an almost universal transferability of information between computers,

INTRODUCTION:
Family therapy is a psychotherapeutic treatment of the family to bring about better psychological
functioning. It is a highly flexible psychotherapeutic approach applicable to a wide range of child
focused and adult focused problems. Family therapy has been viewed as a powerful, fast and
effective method of achieving change within the family (Poin¬ton, 2006).
Definition of family therapy: Gurman, Kniskern, and Pinsof (1986) defined family therapy as any
psychotherapeutic endeavor that explicitly focuses on altering the interactions between or among
family members; and seeks to improve the functioning of the family as a unit, or its subsystems,
and/or the functioning of individual members of the family .
Sholevar (2003) defines family therapy as any use of a family focused intervention to bring out
behavioral and/or atti¬tudinal changes in one or more family members.
Adult: The word adult derived from the adults which means grown to full size and strength or
matured. Adults are the individuals who are completed their growth and are ready to assume their
status in the society along with other adults. There are

the speaker is faced to deal with one of the animals but ended up having to decide for another fawn

He must decide whether to try and save the fawn or let nature take it s course. The speaker

The speaker states, It is usually best to roll them into the canyon:/ that road is narrow. With the

the speaker says it is usually best to roll them into the canyon, he is confessing that he done this
before and he knows this is the best decision to save the most amount of lives. In addition, the
speaker knows that it is too dangerous to be on that road. The speaker states, to swerve might
make more dead. The road is on a mountain so for someone to swerve around the mess of the deer
would send the careening into oncoming traffic or possibly over the canyon road. Most likely no
one would survive the tremendous drop off the canyon. If the fawn was to survive the C section
one can assume that the fawn would become another hassered. The speaker cannot just leave the
newborn fawn on the road. Another driver could potentially hit the fawn, the speaker, or swerve and

Confidentiality In A Therapeutic Relationship
Confidentiality in a therapeutic relationship can be defined as any communication, diagnosis, or
treatment between a patient and a mental health professional. Confidentiality and trust are critical
components of a good therapeutic relationship therefore, it is imperative that mental health
professionals thoroughly explain the meaning of confidentiality and disclosure clauses to their
potential clients.
Mental health professionals are often faced with the decision of having to breach confidentiality.
Unfortunately, they sometimes struggle making this decision because they know breaking
confidentiality can be detrimental to a therapeutic relationship. In addition, it may come with
ethical and legal ramifications. Therefore it is highly recommended that mental professionals seek
consultation or legal advice before disclosing clients information.
According to Texas State and Health Code, В§611.002, a mental health professionalmental health
professional must break confidentiality and disclosure when a client is believed to be a danger to
themselves or someone else, if child abuse or neglect is suspected the mental health professional
must report within 48 hours of first suspicion. According to the Texas Family Code, abuse is
defined very broadly in order to include the following; mental, emotional, sexual, physical, failure to
provide adequate shelter, food, or necessities.

Williams Cohesion
Williams Style: Cohesion and Coherence Concision In this week s lesson, Williams proposes to
give us a complete overall of writing mechanics. Today conducting business in any fast paced
environment requires precise conversations with limited encounters; therefore, one must
articulate clear thoughts across all levels. Williams asserts that every sentence must connect,
and good writers must discern how that process occurs. (65) Williams feels that a passage that
hangs together will captivate readers. (65) Every writer desires his reader to reach that
experience of flow when he or she sits down to indulge in a book. (66) When a writer
accomplishes that small flight, he personifies the epitome of good journalism. But a writer
acknowledges that reaching the natural flow of words takes a systematic approach. (122)
Williams focuses on the big three C s: Cohesion and Coherence, and Concision in chapters five
and nine. The big three C s connect all the dots to a natural flow of reading.... Show more content on

Let s start with cohesion, Williams states that cohesion allows sentences to flow easily from one
to the other. (65) In essence, cohesion fits all the pieces together like a child would put together
the exact pieces for a set of Legos. Williams states that coherence tells us how sentences in a
passage cumulatively begin. (65) In other words, coherence involves seeing how all of the
pieces in a Lego set evolve into this marvelous creation. Lastly, we arrive at concision, which
Williams describes as the minimal words to say what you mean. (123) Concision involves looking
at all the pieces of a Lego set with a process of elimination. Any writer who adapts the following

Energy efficiency is essential to provide citizens with functioning electricity and fuel. The
energy I would use to fuel my city is hydroelectric because its pros and cons outweigh the pros
and cons of solar, coal, wind, and nuclear energy. The most efficient energy source for my city is
hydroelectric energy. Hydroelectric energy is the most efficient for many reasons. Hydroelectric
energy s power fuel is water, which does not give off harmful chemicals or waste in the air or
water; keeping our planet very clean. Hydroelectric energy also has constant power. Its power is
generated by moving water. Water is constantly moving. After hydroelectric plants are produced

I would not choose solar energy for my city for many reasons. Solar panels still gives off pollution
produced as a result of manufacturing, transportation, and installation. The production of energy
is rather noisy from the use of fuels. Solar energy can only be used during daylight hours. Bad
weather can decrease the efficiency of solar energy. Modern solar panels are only around 20%
efficient. The initial investment of solar cells is extremely high. Solar energy has too many cons to
be the best possible source of energy.
Coal is also a very destructive source of energy, and is definitely not the supreme source. Coal is
a non renewable resource. Coal creates the most CO2 in the environment. This destroys the ozone
layer and leads to many climate problems. CO2 is toxic at concentrations above 5 percent. Coal
is also the largest contributor to global warning. Coal causes mass destruction of the environment
around coal mines. Coal mining is the 2nd highest emitter of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Coal mining has high levels of radiation. Coal plants energy sources release the more radiation
than any other energy source! Wind power is a very inconsistent energy source. The wind is
unsteady and unpredictable. Wind power is quite expensive and hard to manage. Both residents
and commercials companies must pay for the expensive power wind turbines provide. Wind farms

Evaluation of the Strategic Management in the Global...
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The purpose of this report is to evaluate the process of the strategic management in the global
competitive environment.
The globalization of the business in our environment has been a source for global organizations to
incorporate the process of a global strategic management.
In this report, we are going to propose three different frameworks from three different group of
authors: Yip, Johnson and Scholes, and Cavusgil and Zou.
However, theses proposed framework would be analysed and compared and we would give a
critical evaluation of theses frameworks.
Through this evaluation we would give some examples about relevant companies in order to
explain the theories, and how does the competitive environment affect ... Show more content on

Indeed, as we can suppose a multilocal strategy differs from a global strategy.
The same author, Yip, defines a multilocal strategy treating competition in each country or region
on a stand alone basis, while global strategy takes an integrated approach across countries and
regions .
To resume, a global strategy could be defined as the way a business competes in a global market,
plays a vital role in determining the performance of a business in the global market , ( Zou and
Cavusgil, 1995).
Define global strategy is seen as a difficult task because our environment is in permanent change
and companies need to these changes the most efficiently possible.
3. Definition of Strategic Management
Initially, Strategic management would involve the degree of implication of people, and especially
managers in order to define, decide and execute a strategy. so as, Johnson and Scholes, can
underlines the term strategic management engross the importance of managers with regard to
strategy, (2008).
And they suppose, strategic management differs from operational management.
Indeed, operational management requires to deal with issues arising in the operational control, all
the operations like the production, the management, the financial performance.
Thus operational control is what managers are involved in most of their time. It is a

Assyrian Empire Research Paper
The Assyrian Empire was revolutionized as one of the most powerful forces of the ancient
world, lasted about 1,875 years before its downfall began, and went through many heights and
lows in its time. However, why did Assyria really succeed for as long as it did? Why did it reach a
downfall period and essentially fail around 609 BC? Over this essay, it will be explained in more
detail on how the Assyrian Empire started, how it evolved over time, and why eventually this
evolution inevitably led to their failure.
Assyria started around the 3rd millennium BCE, but was really acceptably founded around 1900
BCE, by King Erishum I, who placed the temple of Ashur on the site, reinforcing the land
essentially. (Joshua J. Mark) Ashur was the highest... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the beginning, Mitanni came to control Assyria, but the Hittites invaded and took over, and
replaced the court with mainly Hittites. In that court, king Eriba Adad I, gained influence, and
the Assyrians saw opportunity to assert their out autonomy and expand Assyria. They expanded
outward, into areas previously held by Mitanni. The Hittites, seeing this, stuck back, but were
unable to defeat them, and king Ashur Urballit I came to defeat the remaining Mitanni forces
under Hittite commanders. The Assyrians took huge chunks of the land previously owned by
the Mitanni, and later on expanded north and south, driving out the Hittites and conquering
their major strongholds. The general populace of Mitanni were either planned to be deported
safely or assimilated into the growing empire of Assyria. Those who resisted were killed and
sold into slavery. As Assyrians had successfully taken control over former Mitanni, it was a very
prosperous period of the empire. This prosperity increased when Assyrian sacked Babylon and
took control over it. However, about twenty years later in 1200 BC, with the death of Tiglath
Pileser, Assyrians hit a short downfall period, but were revitalized in the reign of Tiglath Pileser I,

Comparing Cronus And The Lightning Thief
The Story of Cronus and The Lightning Thief
The Story of Cronus is an interesting myth where Cronus eats his children in fear that they would
one day take his throne and overpower him. Rhea, his wife, hid their last child, a god named Zeus
in a cave in the heart of Mount Ida. He throve rapidly and soon developed great physical powers
along with wisdom and intelligence. With the help of Metis, Zeus succeeded in forcing his father to
disgorge his siblings. This caused a war in which Zeus had won with the help of the giants. This
myth has the theme the struggle for power since Cronus is afraid of his children overpowering him.
The novel The Lightning Thief, has the same theme as well since Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon fight
with each other. The Story of Cronus communicates with the theme the struggle for power since
Cronus ate his children so that they wouldn t take his throne. The myth states, Cronus having an
uneasy conscience, was afraid that his children might one day rise up against his authority, and thus
verify the prediction of his father, Uranus. This quote shows how Cronus was afraid ... Show more

Academy, Poseidon might have succeeded in hiding his scheme to start a war. But now you have

My 3 Values Essay
Maturity is achieved when a person postpones immediate pleasures for long term values, according
to Joshua Liebman. Values can be just about anything that you can imagine. My 3 values are
respect, loyalty, and honesty. I believe that my three values are what describe me and will help me
when I m older with the decisions that I make.
Respect is one of the most important values to me because they mostly matter in the way that if

To have loyalty in life, can go a long way, most of my values, and goals, the mostly contribute to
the fact that, promotion and advancement are the two main consistent goals in my life. Loyalty
contributes to many things in life such as how we work relationships. Loyalty is treated in my
different ways, I had a dog named Rex, he was a small Pitbull mixed with Boxer, him and I, were
playing outside one day, he saw another boy, and ran off with him, I thought he would ve came

Stress Pathophysiology
Stress is a natural response by the body to situations that arise in life in addition to environment,
bring about in disruption of what you believe the norm. Things and events that produce stress are
known as stress agents. While a body is working properly, it had its own built in stress reaction
which assists you in handling with a stressful condition.
By what means a body responds to stress fluctuates. In instances where it is incapable to handle, it
can lead to life threatening illnesses such as coronary attack and stroke. Persistent stress can

Toys R Us Marketing
When people here the name Toys R Us, they think back to when they were kids of going into a
store made with bricks and mortar and leaving with mom in one hand and the latest toy in other
and a great big smile from cheek to cheek. As time passed the pressure for companies to enter the
clicks of e commerce became strong. In 1998 Toysrus.com, a subsidiary of Toys R Us opened in
attempts to be wherever our customers are, and that includes the Internet. Having a strong brand

on to their vision, which is to put joy in kids hearts and a smile on parents faces , even on the on

It becomes too risky to reinvent new ideas before the company has reached its growth stage of the
Life Cycle. The normal process is to reach maturity and then develop new ideas. Toyrus.com is
staying within scope of the Life cycle; although they have the toy business mastered they are still
trying to master the art of websites.
Social relevance is another factor that one can use to help analyze the attractiveness of the industry.
Overall, any form of business done over the Internet is socially accepted because the Internet offers
convenience as well as a time saver. The number one demographic group that frequents on line toy
stores is mothers of children. They know that when it comes Christmas time, what better way to
save shopping time than to order the toys that kids want on the Internet. It is this mentality that
raises the relevance and necessity for such a website. Society already gives acceptance to the
Internet and to Toy R Us Inc., therefore Toyrus.com is also known to nearly all people within its
industry on the Internet.
The degree of globalization is another factor that influences attractiveness. If a company entering an
industry can also enter a global market, then it is attractive. Toysrus.com has businesses in other
counties such as the United Kingdom, Germany and France. Etoys.com, their main rival, is not as
globally present around the world, they only have a presence in

Behavior Change Theory
Are behavior change theories important to consider when planning and implementing behavior
change interventions?
I think that behavior change theories are quite important in order to develop behavior change
interventions. The theories may advance scholarly insight and methodologies to health
professionals in order to direct effective interventional applications. The interdisciplinary expertise
that may be gleaned from the theorists, may be a necessary element given the current complexities
facing today s health issues. If careful consideration is given to theoretical methodologies that may
be effectively used to redirect behaviors in a positive direction, development of a rational course of
interventional actions to effect change could be realized.

The Spirit Bear Quotes
At the end of the chapter, I actually think that the Spirit Bear probably won t cause any sort of
harm towards Cole this time. The reason being is because in the last paragraph, it quotes that the
bear sniffed the air with a curious breath, and it showed no sign of aggression whatsoever. What s
even more interesting is, is the fact how I think that the Bearcan tell that Cole has really made a
decision to change the way he lives if he had another chance. The spirit bear probably can connect
to somebody spiritually and figure out whether they had a desire to continue to do harm in its
territory, or come out as a peaceful and loving creature. Finally, another logical reason which
convinces me to believe that the Spirit Bear won t kill Cole is

Jeff Harold The Future
The first piece of art we will be looking at was done by Jeff Harold. It is called The Future and is
a black and white photograph taken on 2015. It is 19.5 inches by 13 inches displayed in the

a bridge or possibly train tracks which is centered in the photo. The perspective of the
photograph is from under the bridge looking down the length of it. The bridge is resting on a

I visited Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the exhibition named Form in Fragments:
Abstraction in German Art, 1906 1925 which highlighted in abstraction in German Expressionism.
The exhibition was composed of over 60 works including works by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz
Marc, Lyonel Feininger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Erich Heckel, Otto Dix, and an abstract
film by Hans Richter. Among the many works on view, one of the Paul Klee s prints titled
Hoffmannesque Scene caught my eye.
Hoffmannesque Scene is a lithograph printed in black and colored inks on a wove paper that was
created in 1921 in Germany. The title of the print tells you that it recounts a particular scene that
was inspired by something. This abstract print depicts the freeform shapes of objects including
human and animal with shaded blocks. The depiction of the scene resembles cave and ... Show more

The print is presented with antique brass, pastel brown, pale gold, wheat, and pale chestnut. These
undertones of colors that are softened or moderated create a feeling of gloom and calm at the same
time. In addition, Klee used the technique of color blocking by overlapping squares. There is no
particular color that dominates the entire image or completely catches a viewer s attention.
However, Klee emphasized on harmonization of colors by considering not only the combination
of the colors but also the composition and the scale of the blocks. Each block blends
harmoniously into one another so that it creates a sense of rhythmical or rhythmic changes, even
though those colors used are analogous. Therefore, the print reminds me of lyrical melody,
especially moody and gentle jazz music. While the background of the print presents a sense of
color, the artist detached color from physical description and the objects are drawn childlike.
Thus, the print looks like an illustrated page of a child s diary that depicts an image of his or her

No Exit By Jean Paul Sartre
The play No Exit, by Jean Paul Sartre is about three people that die and go to hell. Joseph Garcin,
a journalist executed by a firing squad for trying to desert during a war; Inez Serrano, a post
office clerk murdered by her lover which left a gas stove on while she slept; and Estelle Rigault,
a woman who married an older rich man and died due to pneumonia. They all expected physical
torture in hell. However, all they found was a plain room with some furniture that always had
the light on, no windows, no beds, nothing that would reflect or work as a mirror. The three of
them were trapped inside the room. After discussing among themselves, they confessed their
crimes and deduced that the torture was psychological. They also realized that they had been
placed together so that each of them was to become the torturer of the other two. Each character
began to ask things from the others to fulfill a need they all had, which only led them to more
despair. Due to this, Garcin concluded that hell is other people (pag26). A. Petrusso argues in his
article No Exit that the three main characters of the play have in common a display of cowardice.
Certainly, all of them seem to be cowards at some moment and one character exhibits it more than
the others. He also argues that certain actions and behaviors are merely the cowardice of the
character when in fact, it rather seems more like fear. The examples and arguments used by
Petrusso seem to simply catalog the main characters as

Essay about Metamorphosis Of Narcissus
The painting Metamorphosis of Narcissus was created in 1937 by oil on canvas by Salvador
Dali. This painting uses a lot of images to say what it means, for example, a person, a hand,
water, a starving dog, a chess board, a canyon or cliff, and people. This is not to fill the paper or
distract the viewer from the suggested meaning or point, but to support the idea that hope and
despair are reflections of one another; on opposite sides of a coin, spinning in mid air, waiting to
land and fix or destroy everything.
The first thing that one thinks upon first seeing it, from far away, is that Dali just painted the same
thing twice.
From afar, it appears as if he simply cut the canvas down the middle and made one side brown and

The huge mural has become an icon of Picasso s work and has been interpreted in several unique
ways, many of which contradict Picasso s actual intentions.
Artistically, the composition is balanced and is a characteristic of Picasso s work; perfectly

The symbols of this piece despite the misconceptions of it s many critics, including those present at
the World s Fair in the year that the painting was introduced, were clearly defined by Picasso
himself.
The preliminary sketches of the work began in May of 1937, and was commissioned by the
official Republican government of Spain in January of the same year. It was to be displayed in the

Stempel is very much a symbolist critic. Stempel is of the belief that Iago is the symbol of evil,

Rosenberg argues against Stempel, claiming that Iago is an intelligent, cunning character who is
like many characters so commonly used the psychological style of writing. McCloskey similar
to Rosenberg thinks that Iago was a man who merely set out to seek justice, who had gotten so
far that it was too late to remove himself from the situation. After researching and examining the
papers of these critics it has become clear that Iago did not carry out evil for the sake of it, he
had a motive. Iago had a lot of jealous and hate built up inside of him, he, like many people had a
reputation to attain. Since Othello and Cassio harmed his reputation, he planned to get revenge.
Overcome with power, and emotions, Iago lacked the will to refrain himself from causing such

Importance Of Small Business
This is great information, what caught my attention was the fact that small business gives equal
opportunity to women and minorities. That is an important factor and that is also one thing that
I feel is key in why small businesses are so important. Upon doing research I learned that small
businesses paid almost fifty percent of the U.S. payroll and this payroll was towards individuals
who may not have been qualified for jobs at larger corporation. The US economy is made up of
various types of people from different walks of life and I feel it is important that all individuals

Small businesses are important to the U.S economy for multiple reasons. According to the U.S
Small Business Administration, small businesses represents for 99.7 percent of all employer firms,
have generated sixty four percent of new jobs and paid forty four percent of the total united states
payroll (Brown, 2017) . Small business is an important role not just in the US economy, but they
also play a major role in the growth of the individual community that they are located in. Small

individuals may not have to have degrees or accolades to qualify for unlike jobs in larger

In today s world, it has to be admitted that more and more power is being given to the people and

Cognitive Theory In Temple Grandin
Temple Grandin, a movie about a young girl with autism facing a hard life, was directed by Mick
Jackson. It is a movie that shows the struggles that Temple Grandin overcomes to produces one of
the nation s best slaughterhouse designs, become an autism advocate, motivational speaker, and
award winning author. The 2010 film shows the physiological cognitive theory throughout it all.
The first time we see the cognitive perspective is when Temple Grandin she sees the man dressed
like a cowboy. The cognitive theory helps explain mental processes such as processing
information, learning, or thinking. Temple Grandin saw the way the man dressed the belt, cowboy
boots, cowboy hat, and the shirt. She processed the information and with it and previous
information she knew from pictures, shows, magazines, and other medias she assumed he was a
bad guy. She saw that the they carry guns, shoot each other, and rob stores. Because of the
unconventional way of processing information. She sees in pictures and relate it to other things she
saw in the media. So the bad guys on television looking like the cowboy in front of her threatened
her.
The second time we saw this approach was in the wallpaper. The movie flashed back to young
Temple age four, not speaking before this point. She saw wallpaper the pattern was unusual, it
showed us her thinking. She saw that two pieces of the wall paper would make one bigger pattern.
In her mind she visualized it. She tended not to speak because she saw the

The Dangers Of Cockfighting In Bali
When one thinks of Bali, one will most possibly envision the white sand beaches, clear blue
skies, calming water and the huge number of Western tourists there. Chances that one will jump
into the idea of cockfighting in Bali villages would probably be very low. Cockfighting plays a
pivotal role in the life of numerous Balinese men. As Geertz (2005), an American anthropologist
suggested, cockfighting is considered as a part of The Balinese Way of Life . A cockfight
, in a
straightforward explanation, means a fight between two roosters in a caged ring until one of them
dies for the amusement of spectators (PETA, n.d.). However, to Balinese men, it means so much
more than this it is an obsession that has been passed down through generations.
Every year in Bali, there will be legal large scale cockfights in almost every village of Bali. This
precedes the renowned public holiday in Bali called Nyepi, where people in Bali are not
allowed to go out of their houses and even have to turn off the lights when they are indoors. This
is done in order to avoid contacts with influx of demons that are chased out of hell for an instant
moment (Geertz, 2005). Before a cockfight, a tadji a razor sharp dagger about four to five inches
long would be attached to each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For any religious ceremony to commence, the blood of at least three roosters needed to be
spilled on the ground (TravelGrom, 2014). In addition, it is believed that cockfighting is related
to certain kind of power animalistic demons. It is seen as a part of Balinese Hindu ritual with blood
considered as sacrifice offerings to assuage the demons hunger. After harvesting crops, one would
usually need to sacrifice the roosters before digging the soil, as it is regarded as Bali villages adat
or local law, which demands sacrifices to be made for good harvests (The Jakarta Post,

Variable Selection Via Penalized Likelihood Plays An...
Variable selection via penalized likelihood plays an important role in statistics and machine
learning. In this paper, we first review some classical methods like AIC, BIC, Mallow s Cp, then
discuss some regularization methods including Lasso, adaptive Lasso, elastic net, adaptive
elastic net and group Lasso. We also consider the application of regularization methods in
generalized linear model, Cox s model and time series analysis. At the end, we give suggestions
for future work. 1 Classical Method The problem of variable selection is always the center of
statistical research. Some classical methods like best subset selection, forward selection and
backward elimination are proposed to handing massive data set. These methods are basically
based on the idea of grid search. For example, the best subset selection searches the optimal
model by all possible combination of the predictors. The forward selection find the best model by
adding one predictor at each time, while the backward elimination finds the best model by
removing one predictor at each time. Although these methods are powerful and accurate, they also
cost a lot. For instance, suppose our model has 10 predictors, if we run the best subset selection to
get the optimal model, we need to compare 1024 combinations of the predictors. It is unrealistic to
perform such method in our real life because it time consuming. As a result, more efficient methods
to solve the problem of variable selection are urgently desired. In

Recognizing a face is a starting point when interacting socially, as it is the most important stimuli
we see. The face portrays information about a person s identity, their emotional state and where
they are directing their visual attention. To be able to process this information within a very short
space of time is crucial in social interactions and probably dates back to our ancestor s survival. The
human brainis very adept in processing an abundance of information in a simple yet effortless
way. These processes require such specific brain areas to do this. This essay is going to discuss
what psychological information is available from the early stages of face processing. The essay
will discuss the neuroscience and the regions of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When humans cognitively process faces this involves either holistic processing or configural
processing. There is evidence that the processing of faces is done much more holistically than with
objects as this comes from studies of inversion (Yin, 1969). An inverted face impairs the recognition
and is much more difficult to encode than with other objects and this could be due to the spatial
relations.
In facial recognition a face model was created by Bruce and Young in 1986 and is one of the most
influential face models to be created and is still used. It comprises of eight components: structural
encoding, expression analysis, facial speech analysis, directed visual processing, face recognition
nodes, person identity nodes, name generation and cognitive system. According to their face
recognition model various types of information are acquired from faces. When recognising a
familiar face, the components used depend largely on structural encoding, face recognition units,
person identity nodes and name generation. In comparison with an unfamiliar face, the
components used depend largely on structural encoding, expression analysis, facial speech
analysis and directed visual processing. However, as the face model created by Bruce and Young
(1986) was quite complex, a simpler version was created by Duchaine and Nakayama (2006) which
provided four stages: face detection, structural encoding, face memory and emotion/gender etc.
It is undeniable

How Does Shakespeare Present The Theme Of Isolation
heme of Isolation through their use of form, structure and language and show how The Outsider has
illuminated this.
Julian Barnes postmodern, Booker prize award winning novel The Sense of an Ending (2011),
William Shakespeare s Sonnets (1609) and Albert Camus The Outsider(1942) all present the central
theme of the isolation that, given circumstance, any individual can be subjected to. Barnes presents
this theme of isolation through the retrospective voice of Barnes first person narrator Tony Webster,
who by the conclusion of the novel has managed to agitate and isolate himself from those who he
once knew well. Similarly, Shakespeare s sonnet series demonstrates a gripping narrative of a love
triangle; an intimate tale of the fair youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When she ends up ends up copulating with Tony soon after their breakup, she may have meant
for it to be one last attempt to express her love for Tony, but Tony interpreted this action as some
form of manipulation from Veronica. The ambiguousness of the pronoun it connotes that there
could be more that there be more for Barnes creation, Tony Webster, to get than the concluding
part of the novel. Perhaps Tony fails to comprehend the increased social status of women in
2011. It could be argued that Tony has become accustomed to the idea of the 1960s woman,
which is suggested by his brief affair with Annie which reflects the sexual revolution of the
1960s in which women were seen as sexual objects rather than the independent gender which
they are today. The dwelling of his past, of the 60s, has led to the deterioration of his
relationships with the other women in the novel as in 2011 women have gained much more
independence since the 1960s. Margaret, the woman who Tony married, stood by his side at first
but abruptly left him on his own now after she noted his obsession for Adrian. This could explain
why the latter part of the novel focuses on the aftermath of Adrian s suicide, an event which
occurred when Tony was in his 20s as Tony s obsession

Thesis For My Papa s Waltz
Literary Research Report: The Waltz The waltz never quite goes out of fashion; it is always just
around the corner; every now and then it returns with a bang... it is sneaking, insidious, disarming
(Menken). The Waltz is a lively and fast paced dance; it allows for people to enjoy music and each
other s company. My Papa s Waltz, by Theodore Roethke, is a cleverly titled piece that takes the
word waltz in an entirely different direction. My Papas Waltz , while short, is a poignant piece that
brings attention to domestic abuse.
There is not one single reason for domestic violence, but instead a multitude of theories. First,
Biological Theory is the idea that violent tendencies are due to genetics and brain development.

Lebron James Of Working At A Frozen Yogurt Shop
You could probably say I m the LeBron James of working at a frozen yogurt shop. In order to get
this title that I found fitting to give myself, I obviously had to go through a few challenges. It s
nothing you would expect, like cleaning the shop to a perfect T or having the best attitude
towards customers. I was actually just a decently mediocre worker with a sense of humor of
what reality slaps me in the face with. The sun was beaming down and melting the tar in the
empty parking lot. The shop was just as still and frozen as the yogurt it sells. An employee teenage
girl was laying down in the back with her nose in a book and a mouth full of cheesecake yogurt.
That employee was me. Like I said, I was mediocre at best. I set my book down... Show more

Sooo... what s your name?
Um... Regan, yours?
Ha ha wow you don t seem excited to be asking in return, but I m Teddy. It s not the only thing I m
not excited about at this point.
Well I think I should be cleaning the windows by myself, you are a customer.
I try to come off a bit confident but since that s not my forte I m sure it didn t.
Well you see here, you were struggling and I m from the south, where when we see a beautiful gal
in trouble you help her out.
He turned to look at me and grinned down making me suddenly feel cold despite the heat.
Why me? I tried to be a good worker and this is what I get? Are you kidding me?
We kept a silence for a few seconds before he perked up again.
So why isn t your boyfriend helping you with the windows? Hah oh my God did he really just
that? Did he really pull THAT line on me?
But what you see little Teddy here didn t know was my boyfriend ACTUALLY WAS at the theatre
working in the building next to me.
Because he is at his own job and I don t need his help with my job.
You know your kind of a scrappy girl, I like that.
I was shocked with how blunt he was. Thank Goodness we were done and could go inside. When
we got inside the Icey air sucked me in. Ted walks over to the cups and tried to revive our pointless
conversation while I texted Jacob to come help me. Being a good boyfriend he rushes over in
seconds. The door bursts open and he

  • 2. Setting Analysis Of To Build A Fire By Jack London Setting Analysis of To Build A Fire Today, children are always told to live for the moment. Not to worry about the little things and to live as if there will be no tomorrow. Almost as if what is done today will not affect tomorrow. In reality, every little thing people do will impact them in some type of way. For every choice or decision someone makes, there is a consequence that comes with it. This consequence can be major, minor, good, or bad. In Jack London s short story To Build A Fire , readers are taken along on a journey with a naive man and his dog as they battle the extreme winter conditions of the Yukon. One of the driving forces to the story s plot is the harsh setting in which this journey takes place. The setting enforces the ominous mood of the story as well as reveals information about the man. While doing so, the setting also conveys the idea that with every decision or action there is a consequence that must be faced. The setting of To Build A Fire is not one that is warm and inviting. Instead, it is one that is frigid and frightening. Many layers of snow on the surface make it seem as if there is an intangible pall over the face of things (London 569). For miles all that can be seen is a sheet of white and the dreariness of the vacant land. The temperature is well in the negatives and the winds are strong. The sun has not been out in days. With every step the man takes, nature throws another obstacle into his path. This is an environment that is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Human Resources department has a very vital role in any development and change management program. There HR department has to ensure are first and foremost kept motivated all the time. This facilitates smooth change towards development. First, there is a need to recruit right and relevant people for the job. Therefore if you can manage your daily stress you can promote a healthier life. The American Medial Association defines stress, as being any disruptions of a person s mental and physical well being. (4.) My position is that if you balance the stress in your life you can live healthier and prevent certain sicknesses. Not all stress is bad for your body. • 5. The Equalizer Film Analysis In the film The Equalizer , a thriller/action directed by Antoine Fuqua, there are several key scenes that build the storyline for the movie, however there was one scene that engaged my attention and I found had great relevance as I studied this film. It is the first fight scene where Robert McCall fights a Russian group holed up in a hotel room. Significant aspects that I noticed Fuqua use in this scene were the characters actions, cameratechniques and lighting. I feel as though these 3 techniques were the most important and the most effective. Fuqua cleverly utilised these techniques in this scene which helped the audienceto understand the characters emotion and to help build tension leading up to the fight. I feel that the director s purpose of this scene is to expose and shed a little light upon Robert and how he approaches tasks as well as the way he thinks and acts in these situations. One example Fuqua has attempted to portray in this scene is how Robert s mind works differently to most other people and this is shown when we see Robert opening and closing the door 3 times before finally locking it behind him. This shows myself and the audience that Robert is some sort of perfectionist and may have some kind of O.C.D. Locking it behind him tells me that he is extremely confident in his own abilities. I definitely wouldn t enter the room let alone go in and lock the door. Robert, throughout the whole scene, is very calm and patient. As he is standing at the door ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Within the last two works, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and The Jungle Book, present the importance of education in the form of not only enlightenment, but also as a tool to ensure clarity of mind and ambitions. In a current sense, we are dealing with the same sort of issues in education. This can in a conceptual way be applied to the difficult idea of combining and finding a balance between the traditional form of teaching with the technology advanced form of education that we are beginning to find normal, in contrast with the concept of British imperialism blending with the previous Indian culture to give... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is simply an irrational apprehension toward people of different races or countries than your own. Although the British see India simply as a land to colonize, they are resistant to even contemplating the idea of accepting some of the Indian traditions. The current pieties of the Indian culture were not only decimated, but were being suppressed. We also see this form of resistance in education as well. The state now requires standards of technology to be included in every lesson plan that it taught. For traditional teachers who have no experience with much of the technology, this can be overwhelming and they resist it on all fronts because they do not understand it. We see this concept of the expectation for us to drop the traditional ideals or techniques that we know well for something that is supposedly better within the jungle in the story The Miracle of Purun Bhagat: He had been, as the Old Law recommends, twenty years a youth, twenty years a fighter though he had never carried a weapon in his life and twenty years the head of a household. Insightful Guides When you were younger, did you ever get separated from your parent and not know what to do or whom to go to for assistance, and because you didn t know what to do you just wandered aimlessly around? I know I have, and that s what a lot of people who are lost like that do. In fact, that happens a lot here with new students. Yes, there are the peer helpers but that only gives the new student one guide for one day. And that guide doesn t even show them their classes, they take them to the classes they have and then the new student, the very next day, is on their own to find their own way. Their independence will be not only in finding their way around but also in knowing where to locate things and who people are. Now many people argue they re in middle school, and they re older now, meaning we have to be independent anyway. But even though we are older, that doesn t mean we always know where things are or we always know what to do. That s like saying a newborn can survive without caretaker. It s as simple as this; newborns know very little about the world and how it works as to new students knowing very little about new schools and how they work. So regardless of maturity or age, people need to be dependent before they can be independent, and the ambassador program is a good form of that temporary dependence. Another benefit of the ambassador program would be that it would allow new students to become comfortable and gain a form of confidence. It s important for new student/staff to be comfortable because if they weren t think of how difficult it would be for them to focus not only in class but just in general. And when students become comfortable and confident enough, that s when they will be able to focus on things like work. But it s often thought that being comfortable shouldn t prioritize over classes and what matters is getting work done. But what most don t realize is that it s virtually impossible for people like us to focus on work if we feel out of place in our everyday environment. But this program would allow ... Today conducting business in any fast paced environment requires precise conversations with limited encounters; therefore, one must articulate clear thoughts across all levels. Williams asserts that every sentence must connect, and good writers must discern how that process occurs. (65) Williams feels that a passage that hangs together will captivate readers. (65) Every writer desires his reader to reach that experience of flow when he or she sits down to indulge in a book. (66) When a writer accomplishes that small flight, he personifies the epitome of good journalism. But a writer acknowledges that reaching the natural flow of words takes a systematic approach. (65) In other words, coherence involves seeing how all of the pieces in a Lego set evolve into this marvelous creation. Comparing Cronus And The Lightning Thief The Story of Cronus and The Lightning Thief The Story of Cronus is an interesting myth where Cronus eats his children in fear that they would one day take his throne and overpower him. Rhea, his wife, hid their last child, a god named Zeus in a cave in the heart of Mount Ida. He throve rapidly and soon developed great physical powers along with wisdom and intelligence. With the help of Metis, Zeus succeeded in forcing his father to disgorge his siblings. This caused a war in which Zeus had won with the help of the giants. My 3 values are respect, loyalty, and honesty. I believe that my three values are what describe me and will help me when I m older with the decisions that I make. There is no particular color that dominates the entire image or completely catches a viewer s attention. However, Klee emphasized on harmonization of colors by considering not only the combination of the colors but also the composition and the scale of the blocks. Each block blends harmoniously into one another so that it creates a sense of rhythmical or rhythmic changes, even though those colors used are analogous. Therefore, the print reminds me of lyrical melody, especially moody and gentle jazz music. Joseph Garcin, a journalist executed by a firing squad for trying to desert during a war; Inez Serrano, a post office clerk murdered by her lover which left a gas stove on while she slept; and Estelle Rigault, a woman who married an older rich man and died due to pneumonia. They all expected physical torture in hell. However, all they found was a plain room with some furniture that always had the light on, no windows, no beds, nothing that would reflect or work as a mirror. The three of them were trapped inside the room. After discussing among themselves, they confessed their crimes and deduced that the torture was psychological. They also realized that they had been placed together so that each of them was to become the torturer of the other two. Each character began to ask things from the others to fulfill a need they all had, which only led them to more despair. Due to this, Garcin concluded that hell is other people (pag26). A. Petrusso argues in his article No Exit that the three main characters of the play have in common a display of cowardice. Certainly, all of them seem to be cowards at some moment and one character exhibits it more than the others. They preach supremacy and freedom of individuals provides fundamental rights, rule of law and security but at the same time the system representing people takes the leading role. Modern states have to incorporate various interests, requirements and political requirements and thus look at collective interests idealizing stability, international image, and maintaining balanced political structure. The constitutional framework of a state bases its policies, decisions on the ideas and ideologies enshrined by the supreme law of the land constitution. All political, social and economic laws, policies are formulated due to the ideological guidelines and principals inculcated by states. The ideas of freedom, security, justice, rule of law, peace, protest, etc. are the building blocks of governance, though ever changing in their meaning. Berlin, discussing J.S. Mill, distinguishes between negative liberty, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Cognitive Theory In Temple Grandin Temple Grandin, a movie about a young girl with autism facing a hard life, was directed by Mick Jackson. It is a movie that shows the struggles that Temple Grandin overcomes to produces one of the nation s best slaughterhouse designs, become an autism advocate, motivational speaker, and award winning author. The 2010 film shows the physiological cognitive theory throughout it all. The first time we see the cognitive perspective is when Temple Grandin she sees the man dressed like a cowboy. The cognitive theory helps explain mental processes such as processing information, learning, or thinking. Temple Grandin saw the way the man dressed the belt, cowboy boots, cowboy hat, and the shirt. She processed the information and with it and previous information she knew from pictures, shows, magazines, and other medias she assumed he was a bad guy. She saw that the they carry guns, shoot each other, and rob stores. Because of the unconventional way of processing information. She sees in pictures and relate it to other things she saw in the media. So the bad guys on television looking like the cowboy in front of her threatened her. The second time we saw this approach was in the wallpaper. The movie flashed back to young Temple age four, not speaking before this point. She saw wallpaper the pattern was unusual, it showed us her thinking. She saw that two pieces of the wall paper would make one bigger pattern. In her mind she visualized it. She tended not to speak because she saw the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Dangers Of Cockfighting In Bali When one thinks of Bali, one will most possibly envision the white sand beaches, clear blue skies, calming water and the huge number of Western tourists there. Chances that one will jump into the idea of cockfighting in Bali villages would probably be very low. Cockfighting plays a pivotal role in the life of numerous Balinese men. As Geertz (2005), an American anthropologist suggested, cockfighting is considered as a part of The Balinese Way of Life . A cockfight , in a straightforward explanation, means a fight between two roosters in a caged ring until one of them dies for the amusement of spectators (PETA, n.d.). However, to Balinese men, it means so much more than this it is an obsession that has been passed down through generations. Every year in Bali, there will be legal large scale cockfights in almost every village of Bali. This precedes the renowned public holiday in Bali called Nyepi, where people in Bali are not allowed to go out of their houses and even have to turn off the lights when they are indoors. This is done in order to avoid contacts with influx of demons that are chased out of hell for an instant moment (Geertz, 2005). Before a cockfight, a tadji a razor sharp dagger about four to five inches long would be attached to each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For any religious ceremony to commence, the blood of at least three roosters needed to be spilled on the ground (TravelGrom, 2014). In addition, it is believed that cockfighting is related to certain kind of power animalistic demons. It is seen as a part of Balinese Hindu ritual with blood considered as sacrifice offerings to assuage the demons hunger. After harvesting crops, one would usually need to sacrifice the roosters before digging the soil, as it is regarded as Bali villages adat or local law, which demands sacrifices to be made for good harvests (The Jakarta Post, ... • 45. Variable Selection Via Penalized Likelihood Plays An... Variable selection via penalized likelihood plays an important role in statistics and machine learning. In this paper, we first review some classical methods like AIC, BIC, Mallow s Cp, then discuss some regularization methods including Lasso, adaptive Lasso, elastic net, adaptive elastic net and group Lasso. We also consider the application of regularization methods in generalized linear model, Cox s model and time series analysis. At the end, we give suggestions for future work. 1 Classical Method The problem of variable selection is always the center of statistical research. Some classical methods like best subset selection, forward selection and backward elimination are proposed to handing massive data set. These methods are basically based on the idea of grid search. For example, the best subset selection searches the optimal model by all possible combination of the predictors. The forward selection find the best model by adding one predictor at each time, while the backward elimination finds the best model by removing one predictor at each time. Although these methods are powerful and accurate, they also cost a lot. For instance, suppose our model has 10 predictors, if we run the best subset selection to get the optimal model, we need to compare 1024 combinations of the predictors. It is unrealistic to perform such method in our real life because it time consuming. As a result, more efficient methods to solve the problem of variable selection are urgently desired. In ... • 46. What Psychological Information Is Available From The Early... Recognizing a face is a starting point when interacting socially, as it is the most important stimuli we see. The face portrays information about a person s identity, their emotional state and where they are directing their visual attention. To be able to process this information within a very short space of time is crucial in social interactions and probably dates back to our ancestor s survival. The human brainis very adept in processing an abundance of information in a simple yet effortless way. These processes require such specific brain areas to do this. This essay is going to discuss what psychological information is available from the early stages of face processing. The essay will discuss the neuroscience and the regions of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When humans cognitively process faces this involves either holistic processing or configural processing. There is evidence that the processing of faces is done much more holistically than with objects as this comes from studies of inversion (Yin, 1969). An inverted face impairs the recognition and is much more difficult to encode than with other objects and this could be due to the spatial relations. In facial recognition a face model was created by Bruce and Young in 1986 and is one of the most influential face models to be created and is still used. It comprises of eight components: structural encoding, expression analysis, facial speech analysis, directed visual processing, face recognition nodes, person identity nodes, name generation and cognitive system. According to their face recognition model various types of information are acquired from faces. When recognising a familiar face, the components used depend largely on structural encoding, face recognition units, person identity nodes and name generation. In comparison with an unfamiliar face, the components used depend largely on structural encoding, expression analysis, facial speech analysis and directed visual processing. However, as the face model created by Bruce and Young (1986) was quite complex, a simpler version was created by Duchaine and Nakayama (2006) which provided four stages: face detection, structural encoding, face memory and emotion/gender etc. It is undeniable ... • 47. How Does Shakespeare Present The Theme Of Isolation heme of Isolation through their use of form, structure and language and show how The Outsider has illuminated this. Julian Barnes postmodern, Booker prize award winning novel The Sense of an Ending (2011), William Shakespeare s Sonnets (1609) and Albert Camus The Outsider(1942) all present the central theme of the isolation that, given circumstance, any individual can be subjected to. Barnes presents this theme of isolation through the retrospective voice of Barnes first person narrator Tony Webster, who by the conclusion of the novel has managed to agitate and isolate himself from those who he once knew well. Similarly, Shakespeare s sonnet series demonstrates a gripping narrative of a love triangle; an intimate tale of the fair youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When she ends up ends up copulating with Tony soon after their breakup, she may have meant for it to be one last attempt to express her love for Tony, but Tony interpreted this action as some form of manipulation from Veronica. The ambiguousness of the pronoun it connotes that there could be more that there be more for Barnes creation, Tony Webster, to get than the concluding part of the novel. Perhaps Tony fails to comprehend the increased social status of women in 2011. It could be argued that Tony has become accustomed to the idea of the 1960s woman, which is suggested by his brief affair with Annie which reflects the sexual revolution of the 1960s in which women were seen as sexual objects rather than the independent gender which they are today. The dwelling of his past, of the 60s, has led to the deterioration of his relationships with the other women in the novel as in 2011 women have gained much more independence since the 1960s. Margaret, the woman who Tony married, stood by his side at first but abruptly left him on his own now after she noted his obsession for Adrian. This could explain why the latter part of the novel focuses on the aftermath of Adrian s suicide, an event which occurred when Tony was in his 20s as Tony s obsession ... The Waltz is a lively and fast paced dance; it allows for people to enjoy music and each other s company. My Papa s Waltz, by Theodore Roethke, is a cleverly titled piece that takes the word waltz in an entirely different direction. My Papas Waltz , while short, is a poignant piece that brings attention to domestic abuse. There is not one single reason for domestic violence, but instead a multitude of theories. In order to get this title that I found fitting to give myself, I obviously had to go through a few challenges. It s nothing you would expect, like cleaning the shop to a perfect T or having the best attitude towards customers. I was actually just a decently mediocre worker with a sense of humor of what reality slaps me in the face with. The sun was beaming down and melting the tar in the empty parking lot. The shop was just as still and frozen as the yogurt it sells. An employee teenage girl was laying down in the back with her nose in a book and a mouth full of cheesecake yogurt. That employee was me. Like I said, I was mediocre at best. I set my book down... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sooo... what s your name? Um... Regan, yours?
