Under the guidance of,
Course In-charge :
Dr. K. P. Vani
Date of Assignment Given : 30.06.2020
Date of Submission : 02.07.2020
Definitions :
1. Area : The total area of cultivation (in hectares).
2. Production : The yield gained (in tons).
3. Productivity : The yield per unit area (in
tons/hectares)
The area and productivity is the data used to assess
the productivity of country.
The Production refers to the efficiency of the crop
growth in our country.
So, we are going to see the Area, Production and
Productivity of Cereals of the Year 2019-20 (3rd
Advanced Estimate) along with its scenario and
trends with previous year in World, India & States
crop-wise.
CEREALS
The word Cereal derives from Ceres, the name of the Roman
goddess of harvest and agriculture. Cereals are grasses (members of
the monocot family Poaceae, also known as Gramineae) cultivated
for the edible components of their grain (botanically, a type of fruit
called a caryopsis), composed of the endosperm, germ and bran.
Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more
food energy worldwide than any other type of crop, they are
therefore staple crops.
In their natural form (as in whole grain), they are a rich source of
carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fats, oils and protein. However, when
refined by the removal of the bran and germ, the remaining endosperm
is mostly carbohydrate and lacks the majority of the other
nutrients. In some developing nations, grain in the form of rice,
wheat, millet or maize constitutes a majority of daily sustenance
The cereal group included here contains various millets, small
millets and food grains.

  • 2. Definitions : 1. Area : The total area of cultivation (in hectares). 2. Production : The yield gained (in tons). 3. Productivity : The yield per unit area (in tons/hectares) The area and productivity is the data used to assess the productivity of country. The Production refers to the efficiency of the crop growth in our country.
  • 3. So, we are going to see the Area, Production and Productivity of Cereals of the Year 2019-20 (3rd Advanced Estimate) along with its scenario and trends with previous year in World, India & States crop-wise.
  • 4. CEREALS The word Cereal derives from Ceres, the name of the Roman goddess of harvest and agriculture. Cereals are grasses (members of the monocot family Poaceae, also known as Gramineae) cultivated for the edible components of their grain (botanically, a type of fruit called a caryopsis), composed of the endosperm, germ and bran. Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy worldwide than any other type of crop, they are therefore staple crops. In their natural form (as in whole grain), they are a rich source of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fats, oils and protein. However, when refined by the removal of the bran and germ, the remaining endosperm is mostly carbohydrate and lacks the majority of the other nutrients. In some developing nations, grain in the form of rice, wheat, millet or maize constitutes a majority of daily sustenance
