A Container-Centric Methodology for Benchmarking Workflow Management SystemsVincenzo Ferme
Trusted benchmarks should provide reproducible results obtained following a transparent and well-defined process. In this paper, we show how Containers, originally developed to ease the automated deployment of Cloud application components, can be used in the context of a benchmarking methodology. The proposed methodology focuses on Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs), a critical service orchestration middleware, which can be characterized by its architectural complexity, for which Docker Containers offer a highly suitable approach. The contributions of our work are: 1) a new benchmarking approach taking full advantage of containerization technologies; and 2) the formalization of the interaction process with the WfMS vendors described clearly in a written agreement. Thus, we take advantage of emerging Cloud technologies to address technical challenges, ensuring the performance measurements can be trusted. We also make the benchmarking process transparent, automated, and repeatable so that WfMS vendors can join the benchmarking effort.

n 2014, a few Jenkins hackers set out to implement a new way of defining continuous delivery pipelines in Jenkins. Dissatisfied with chaining jobs together, configured in the web UI, the effort started with Apache Groovy as the foundation and grew from there. Today the result of that effort, named Jenkins Pipeline, supports a rich DSL with "steps" provided by a Jenkins plugins, built-in auto-generated documentation, and execution resumability which allow Pipelines to continue executing while the master is offline.
In this talk we'll take a peek behind the scenes of Jenkins Pipeline. Touring the various constraints we started with, whether imposed by Jenkins or Groovy, and discussing which features of Groovy were brought to bear during the implementation. If you're embedding, extending or are simply interested in the internals of Groovy this talk should have plenty of food for thought.

Abstract
There is a lot of debate whether to use Serverless or Kubernetes to build cloud-native apps. Both have their advantages and unique capabilities which developers should take into consideration when planning new projects. We will throw some light on the topics ease of use, maturity, types of scenarios, developer productivity and debugging, supported languages, DevOps and monitoring, performance, community and pricing. Risk quantification can be a valuable tool for selling transformation to executives. It’s also important to understand how your company looks at risk. Most CEOs will have a certain amount of risk they’re willing to take called their risk tolerance. This will help you to understand if your project is worth pursuing. If your project won’t offset more risk than the risk tolerance, then it’s unlikely to be funded if it’s not a new feature or product.
We’ll explore how we can go about quantifying risk in real-world situations I’ve faced in presenting transformation initiatives. This information will help you to understand how a business looks at risk and the associated value of mitigating that risk. Want to start a new CI/CD initiative, bake in the risk averted by putting SAST and DAST in your pipeline. This would have helped Equifax avoid their breach and the risk of such a breach is very high and carries a very large cost.
We’ll also take a look at some additional resources to help you assess risk such as data on breaches, attacks, the FAIR tool, and other resources you can use once you leave the session.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
