In an ever more competitive marketplace, organizations have turned to Agile and DevOps practices to deliver software innovations to market more quickly and with high quality. Across industries, companies are making heavy investments in tools and process improvements around automated build, test, continuous integration and delivery, and release automation and orchestration. However, despite these investments, many organizations are still struggling to bring the necessary speed and quality to their software delivery. In many cases, this is because Agile and DevOps improvements have not been applied to the entire software stack and are often limited to application code delivery.
This webinar will explore the transformation that Colonial Life made in bringing DevOps to the entire software stack. Specifically, beyond automating and accelerating the validation and delivery of application code, this webinar will focus on the critical role that data and the database play in modern software delivery and the tools and processes that can bring the same automation to database code.
After this webinar, you will understand:
* What holds organizations back despite an Agile application development process
* The benefits of automating the validation and deployment of database changes
* A template for bringing DevOps to the entire software stack

Gradle is an open-source build automation tool focused on flexibility, build reproducibility and performance. Over the years, this tool has evolved and introduced new concepts and features around dependency management, publication and other aspects on build and release of artifacts for the Java platform.
Keeping up to date with all these features across several projects can be challenging. How do you make sure that all your projects can be upgraded to the latest version of Gradle? What if you have thousands of projects and hundreds of engineers? How can you abstract common tasks for them and make sure that new releases work as expected?
At Netflix, we built Nebula, a collection of Gradle plugins that helps engineers remove boilerplate in Gradle build files, and makes building software the Netflix way easy. This reduces the cognitive load on developers, allowing them to focus on writing code.
In this talk, I’ll share with you our philosophy on how to build JVM artifacts and the pieces that help us boost the productivity of engineers at Netflix. I’ll talk about:
- What is Nebula
- What are the common problems we face and try to solve
- How we distribute it to every JVM engineer
- How we ensure that Nebula/Gradle changes do not break builds so we can ship new features with confidence at Netflix
XP teams try to keep systems fully integrated at all times, and shorten the feedback cycle to minutes and hours instead of weeks or months. The sooner you know, the sooner you can adapt.

APEX Application Lifecycle and Deployment 20220714.pdfRichard Martens
APEX application deployment is mostly done by exporting the application and importing it into the target environment.
But what if your team continuously develops (as they should), where do you stop developing to start preparing your release-deployment? You should be able to deploy based on features; without your developers having to halt their development.
Using the deployment-method explained in this presentation you will be able to do just that.
The method includes things like Code versioning (GIT), Feature-tickets (Jira), Code Review (Quality), Automated Deployment using Jenkins and Flyway. When implemented you will be able to successfully and predictively deploy your APEX applications (including underlying database objects) to the different deployment-environments.
With a few modifications you can even upgrade the methodology to be a "continuous delivery" methodology.

Modernizing on IBM Z Made Easier With Open Source SoftwareDevOps.com
In the past decade, IDC has seen IBM Z evolve first from a siloed platform to what they call a "connected" platform, and then to a "transformative" platform. This transition has been driven by IBM, by the IBM Z software vendors, like Rocket Software, and by businesses themselves.
IDC research shows that businesses that choose to modernize IBM Z achieve higher satisfaction than re-platformers and many are using open source software (OSS) in their modernization initiatives. Employing OSS makes it possible to crack the platform open and enable it to connect to the rest of the datacenter and the outside world. Join IDC guest speaker, Al Gillen and Peter Fandel as they take a deeper look at the value proposition associated with using commercially supported OSS in mission-critical environments, like IBM Z. In this webinar we’ll discuss:
How OSS can neutralize the disparity between seasoned IBM Z and emerging developers
The modernization initiatives that involve OSS
What to consider before bringing OSS to IBM Z
How Rocket Software is delivering commercially supported OSS to IBM Z

2020 was a brutal year for ransomware. Cybercriminals operated without any human decency, targeting the most vulnerable and at-risk parties, such as hospitals, scientists, and global manufacturers. The approach has become more sophisticated and life-threatening, shifting from individual targets to global enterprises, destroying backups, blackmailing victims with public leakage of exfiltrated data, and paralyzing critical systems and infrastructure.
Getting Started with Runtime Security on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)DevOps.com
As containers and Kubernetes are adopted in production, security is a critical concern and DevOps teams need to go beyond image scanning. Use cases such as runtime security, network visibility and segmentation, incident response and compliance become priorities as your Kubernetes security framework matures.
In this talk, we’ll share an overview of runtime security, discuss approaches used by open source and commercial tools, and hear how users are getting started quickly without impacting developer productivity.
In any fast-paced engineering environment, unexpected incidents can arise and escalate without warning. Without strong leadership within teams, you get chaotic, stressful, and tiring situations that waste valuable engineering time, slow down resolution, and most importantly, impact your customers.
Operationally mature organisations use proven incident response systems led by Incident Commanders. Incident Commanders provide the leadership needed to help stabilize major incidents fast.
In this webinar, we’ll take lessons learned from formalized incident response, such as those used by first responders, and show you how to apply those same practices to your organization. By utilising these methods you’ll improve both the speed and effectiveness of your team’s response, reducing the amount of downtime experienced.
In this workshop, attendees will:
Be introduced to the Incident Command System and learn how it can be adapted to their organisation
Walk through the basics of incident response best practices
Discuss examples of formal incident response from multiple organisations

However, delivering the App still requires multiple steps such as allocation of virtual IPs, provisioning the front load balancer, configuring firewall rules, configuring a public domain, and DDOS. At present, each of these steps requires coordination across multiple teams with multiple iterations per team. The time efficiencies gained by adopting microservices and cloud-native technologies is negated due to the time taken to deliver the App.
In this session, Pranav Dharwadkar, VP of products at Volterra, and Jakub Pavlik, director of engineering, will help you understand these challenges and introduce a distributed proxy architecture that can alleviate the challenges across different cloud environments. This webinar will include a live demo using a distributed proxy architecture to advertise an App publicly and privately.
In this webinar, you will learn:
The steps required to deliver an App using the current approaches
How a distributed proxy architecture can be used to deliver the app publicly and privately
The operational benefits of a distributed proxy architecture for delivering new services

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

How Application Releases Used to Work at Colonial Life…
# What Happens:
1 Developer codes and unit test locally, check-in to TFVC, version and label in TFVC
2 Deployment engineer pulls code from TFVC, manually initiates a build via Visual Build Pro on the build box
3 Deployment engineer manually initiates a copy of DLLs from build box to Dev server(s), DBAs manually deploy SQL scripts,
developers manually performed testing in the environment to validate the deployment
4 After passing Dev testing, Deployment engineer manually initiates a copy of DLLs from Dev server(s) to Acpt server(s), DBAs
manually apply SQL Scripts, QA manually performed functional and regression testing
5 After passing QA testing, Deployment engineer manually creates a backup, manually initiates a copy of DLLs from Acpt (UAT)

§ Evaluate what you can do with the applications you have
§ First: Think about just doing automated build/deploy, possibly add other
automation to the pipeline (such as test) and then go back to think about
architecture. (shorter term effort with benefits realized faster)
§ Next: Evaluate what it takes to re-architect? (longer term effort with benefits
realized later)
§ Even for greenfield apps:

§ What types of tools work best (related to the stack you use)
§ List out tasks and map tools to the tasks
§ Tools can depend on the stack you are using (Java, .NET, etc.), but there are
some agnostic tools
§ Jenkins and Artifactory are agnostic
§ Artifactory: nobody had previously managed a binary repo
§ Datical is agnostic to common DBMS platforms in the enterprise
§ Two types:
§ Automate a task that has been happening
§ Net new tasks/processes/activities (Artifactory)
Advice on Tools for DevOps
19. 19
19
§ Do you have in-house applications that are very data-heavy or
otherwise coupled to a database?
§ Ex: We had 900 database scripts as part of a single release. Can’t do
DevOps without automated versioning, validation, and deployment of
these scripts
§ When you have apps that are highly dependent on the database
– your data has to go with your code deployment. Otherwise
things will get out of sync only slowing the pipeline.
Database Best-Practice

§ Going to expand across the
enterprise
§ Figure out a good set of best
practices and got familiar with
tools
§ Start by bringing build, release,
and test automation first to all
pipelines to start releasing
faster
Next Steps
§ Going to streamline pipeline
creation and management
§ Script out the pipeline instead
of manually defining/configuring
so we can version and backup
the pipeline itself. It’s pipeline
as code!
§ Evaluate what systems need
database release automation
§ Not all apps consistently
include database changes
