Arachnids have eight legs and segmented bodies made up of two main parts - the cephalothorax and the abdomen. They can be found everywhere except the open ocean and include spiders, scorpions and mites. Arachnids breathe through book lungs or tracheal systems and have an open circulatory system. They reproduce sexually and give birth to live young or lay eggs. Common characteristics include a hard exoskeleton, venom glands, and respiratory, excretory and nervous systems adapted for their lifestyle. Arachnids are generally solitary and prefer brief mating encounters.
