In the past two years of developing OpenStax Tutor, the OpenStax team has learned several valuable lessons that can benefit educators, digital courseware providers, and students from making costly miscalculations. Lessons learned and presented are 1) technology with high-quality content and assessment is most valuable; 2) instructor workflow is a highway, not a fork in the road; 3) emergence of data privacy standards can accelerate acceptance of digital courseware; and, 4) it's not about price, it's about value.

Studies show that integrating various technologies into the classroom and lab can help supplement instruction and support accurate placement of students. Some schools are experimenting with acceleration models that allow students to complete multiple developmental math levels in one semester using self-paced online platforms. While technologies offer benefits, simply using them as add-ons is not enough - developmental math courses need redesign to fully prepare students.

Equations and Inequalities - Making mathematics accessible to all
More than ever, students need to engage with mathematical concepts, think quantitatively and analytically, and communicate using mathematics. All these skills are central to a young person’s preparedness to tackle problems that arise at work and in life beyond the classroom. But the reality is that many students are not familiar with basic mathematics concepts and, at school, only practice routine tasks that do not improve their ability to think quantitatively and solve real-life, complex problems.
How can we break this pattern? This report, based on results from PISA 2012, shows that one way forward is to ensure that all students spend more “engaged” time learning core mathematics concepts and solving challenging mathematics tasks. The opportunity to learn mathematics content – the time students spend learning mathematics topics and practising maths tasks at school – can accurately predict mathematics literacy. Differences in students’ familiarity with mathematics concepts explain a substantial share of performance disparities in PISA between socio-economically advantaged and disadvantaged students. Widening access to mathematics content can raise average levels of achievement and, at the same time, reduce inequalities in education and in society at large.

Developing literacy skills in a digital world: New findings from PISA
Reading is a far more complex task today than it once was. The Internet has transported the written word from the confines of a few carefully curated books to the phone screens in everyone’s pocket, and accredited publishers are no longer the gatekeepers of what and how we read – today, anyone can publish with almost no constraints.
How can we verify what we read online? What skills are involved in evaluating the trustworthiness of a source and understanding the information provided?
In 2018, the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) addressed reading as its main subject, and the reading framework was devised to include essential reading skills in a digital world, to provide important insights into how 15-year-old students are developing reading skills to navigate the technology-rich 21st century, and how this varies by geography, social background or gender. It also explores what teachers can do to help students navigate ambiguity and manage complexity.

The world is currently facing a health pandemic and sanitary crisis without precedent in our recent history.
This has affected the normal functioning of education systems worldwide. Nearly all of the 48 countries and economies participating in TALIS are now facing mass and prolonged school closures on all or significant parts of their territory, and UNESCO estimates that 1.25 billion learners are impacted worldwide – i.e. nearly 73% of total enrolments.
This is a major external shock on the operations of our schools and the work of our teachers, who have had to move to distance and digital education offerings within a few days. It is also a major shock and challenge for parents who have been turned into home-schoolers overnight, with no training for this!
This is an odd timing to present the findings of a report depicting the functioning of schools and the work of teachers “before Covid-19”. And although there are lots of interesting things in this report, this is not a priority for today.
Today, I would like to reflect instead on how school and teachers can adapt to these dire circumstances and carry forward their teaching.
Today, I would like to focus on TALIS findings that can help educational systems as they deal with the crisis, and think forward in working out possible strategies to cope with these circumstances.
Today, I would like to convey hope that we can count on teachers to rise to the challenges.
Mathematics and technology

As redes sociais estão presentes nas nossas vidas, nomeadamente entre os mais jovens. Verificou-se, num contexto de pré-escolar, que várias crianças se referiam à utilização do Facebook em casa e por isso pareceu-nos pertinente verificar as percepções destas crianças sobre a referida rede social. Foram entrevistas 50 crianças com 5 anos de um jardim de infância da rede pública. Em termos gerais verifica-se que a maioria conhece o Facebook e alguns utilizam a “conta” dos pais para jogar. Esta plataforma é atrativa, tanto para adultos como para crianças, e as vantagens da sua utilização também são alargadas, nomeadamente a socialização com os outros. A escola e os pais não se podem alhear desta crescente utilização, principalmente entre os mais novos, sendo necessário alertar para alguns cuidados a ter na sua utilização, nomeadamente conteúdo inapropriado ou encontros indesejáveis.

Las tecnologías están presentes en la sociedad de una manera irreversible y la escuela mientras institución formadora deparase con incontables desafíos y enfrenta profundas transformaciones, no pudiéndose alear de esta evolución, corriendo el riesgo de hacerse obsoleta.
Para que sea hecha una correcta integración de las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de los niños, el educador de infancia necesita de tener cualificaciones, habilidades y conocimientos de modo a poder alcanzar sus objetivos.
Las instituciones de formación inicial de educadores infantiles, en Portugal y España, proporcionan formación a nivel de las TIC? Este fue el punto de partida de esta investigación, de cariz metodológico cuantitativo y descriptivo. Fueron consultados los planes de estudios de las instituciones de formación de educadores infantiles en Portugal y España, a través de sus páginas de internet, siendo la información recogida posteriormente analizada. Constatamos que, quiere en Portugal, quiere en España, la gran mayoría de estas instituciones tiene, por lo menos, una unidad curricular relacionada con TIC en sus planes de estudio, lo que significa que las TIC están representadas en los currículos de las instituciones de ambos países.

A discussão em torno da utilização do computador evoluiu de “devemos ou não utilizar o computador em educação?” para “como podemos melhorar a utilização do computador na educação?”. No entanto, são vários os estudos concluem que os computadores ainda não são utilizados eficazmente para e com as crianças (Dawson, 2008; Tezci, 2011). A investigação refere a adoção das TIC (Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação) no ambiente educativo depende dos sentimentos dos profissionais, competências e atitudes perante as TIC. Ou seja, educadores/professores que têm atitudes positivas relativamente às TIC e que as compreendem como uma ferramenta útil na aprendizagem vão, obviamente, integrá-las na sala mais facilmente que outros professores
Porque é que o computador continua a não ser utilizado como uma ferramenta do educador no ensino e aprendizagem? De modo a responder a esta questão foi desenvolvido um estudo que contemplará 3 fases, onde na primeira fase será aplicado um questionário aos alunos da licenciatura em Educação Básica antes da lecionação da Unidade Curricular (UC) “TIC aplicadas à educação”, a segunda fase consta da aplicação do mesmo questionário aos mesmos alunos após o final da UC e numa terceira fase serão selecionados alguns alunos que responderam a ambos os questionários e será feito um período de observação na sua futura prática profissional. Através desta investigação quisemos conhecer as opiniões de futuros educadores/professores
sobre as suas competências informáticas e as suas intenções de integrar as TIC na sua futura
prática profissional. Para isso foi distribuído um questionário a 52 alunos do 2º ano da
licenciatura em Educação Básica, numa instituição de ensino superior situada no distrito de
Lisboa. Este questionário resultou da fusão de dois questionários que fazem parte de outras
investigações de diferentes autores realizadas anteriormente, com objetivos semelhantes e
este estudo. Verificámos que todos os alunos consideram-se muito competentes na utilização
do computador, a sua opinião é de que o computador é uma ferramenta importante e uma
mais-valia para as aprendizagens das crianças e tencionam introduzi-lo futuramente nas suas
práticas. Terminamos este estudo com a seguinte questão: será que estes profissionais irão,
efetivamente, utilizar as TIC nas suas práticas?
A utilização do computador e Internet por idosos
Esta investigação resulta da experiência da participação da autora como monitora de aulas de informática de um grupo de idosos. Que utilizações fazem os idosos do computador e da Internet? Quais as suas opiniões sobre estas tecnologias? Estas foram as questões de partida para esta investigação. Os vinte e dois idosos preencheram um questionário online e através da análise dos dados pudemos verificar que, embora tenham certas dificuldades em utilizar algum tipo de software, estes gostam muito de usar o computador e a Internet, e querem aperfeiçoar esta utilização, de modo a não serem info-excluídos e a fazerem parte da sociedade da informação.
