ถือเป็นยุคต่อจากเครือข่ายอินเทอร์เน็ตที่ใช้งานในปัจจุบัน โดย IoT
จะทางานภายใต้สภาพแวดล้อมเครือข่ายแบบกลุ่มเมฆ (Cloud
Computing) ผ่านทางเครือข่ายอินเทอร์เน็ต การทางานและการ
ควบคุมเครือข่าย IoT ที่นิยมในปัจจุบันคือโดยเขียนโค้ด
โปรแกรมควบคุมผ่านทางบอร์ดคอมพิวเตอร์ขนาดเล็กอาจเรียกได้ว่า
บอร์ดสมองกลฝังตัว อาทิ Arduino, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone
Black, Galileo, Orange Pi เป็นต้น
