The Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis has published many studies that use behavioral analytic
procedures in combination with sport psychology, also referred to behavioral sport psychology.
Many principles of applied behavioral analysis have been incorporated in individualized behavior–
change programs intervening on improving sport skills and performance among athletes. Methods
such as shaping, goal setting, behavior skills training, performance feedback, and modelling will be

the targeted participants or groups of interest in this field include young male football athletes
ranging between 10 to 17 years of age. Interventions for these participants were typically conducted

Applied behavioral analysis (ABA) is a form of therapy rooted in the basic principles of Watson
(1913) and Skinner's (1957) behaviorism. ABA was pioneered in the 1970s and 1980s by Dr. Ivar
Lovaas (1987), professor at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Famously known for its
use on children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), ABA therapy strives to create an
environment where children learn to succeed through positive reinforcement and goal–oriented
approaches. Techniques such as behavioral management, discrete trial training (DTT), and mastery
learning detailed the effectiveness of ABA used within each of these frameworks. ABA when used
in school settings requires a series of certifications and assessments to measure therapist
competency. Parents of children with ASD are also educated on how to apply behavioral
interventions on their children to manage disorderly behavior. Research on ABA applied from a
Christian perspective, however, proved challenging, as children with ASD tend to think more
concretely than abstractly.

Behavior Analysis. Critchfields basis for this is that both are both professions, but are different

contributor of the negative connotation with this method. ABA is the application of behavioral
learning principles to change behavior (Woolfolk 256). Applied Behavior Analysis can be very
successful in the classroom if done correctly. However, to begin this, one must study a student to
decide what reinforcers will best work to modify the behavior. When using Applied Behavior
Analysis, the role of the teacher is crucial. For ABA to be used correctly, a teacher must keep
documentation on every student. This documentation should be taken frequently and with precision.
Little details such as a shift in interest should be documented. This documentation will show the
progress each child makes in the process of modifying their behaviors. In addition to keeping
thorough documentation, teachers must examine each student individually. In observing their
interests, teachers can form individual enforcers for each student. For example, if a student always
chooses to do puzzles during free time, puzzle pieces could be a reinforcer. Every time the student
does something that deals with the positive modification of behavior, they can earn a puzzle piece.
When all of the pieces are earned, they will be able to put the puzzle together. This method is
beneficial when correcting a student's behavior.

Chester has recently displayed some behaviors of great concernt to his mother. She states that he has

Assessment
Prior to any services being put into place, there will need to a functional behavioral assessment
needs to be completed. A functional behavioral assessment (FBA), as stated by Cooper, Heron and
Heward (2007), is used to acquire information about what the function of a certain behavior serves
for a person. Through the use of a direct functional assessment mehtods and an indirect functional
assessment methods, information can be gathered on Chester's behaviors and what the function of
those behvaiors are.
Indirect functional assessment methods are used to gather information from others who are
acquainted with that person, such as parents and teachers, through the use of questionairres,

Thank you for your considering my application to the Applied Behavior analysis program. For all of
my life I have known that I was going to help people. It could be said that it is in my DNA. I just
never suspected what the capacity would be. On December 15thI graduated from Albright college, I
began working at Melmark on December 16th. My first thought, on that first day was "Oh no, I can't
do this, I need to quit" That was over two years ago, and I have gone to work every day, with a smile
on my face. While working at my first position, out of college, I discovered my passion. My
passion, I find, is working with children and adults with autism and with people who suffer from

attention is applied behavior analysis (ABA). The goal of this research article is to explore the
definition of applied behavior analysis, its development over time, and its application to real life.
Some questions that will be explored are when and where did ABA originate, how has it developed
over time, and what researchers contributed new findings to this intervention. Additionally, the
methods that have been developed over time to implement ABA will be discussed, specifically with
their application to autism and individuals diagnosed with ASD. Finally, there will be a discussion
of how skills that individuals with ASD gain from applied behavioral analysis can be applied to a
classroom setting.
