ABA can help in classrooms by shaping student behavior through positive reinforcement. While commonly used for students with autism, ABA techniques can benefit all students by defining measurable behaviors, collecting data to show progress, and teaching skills through structured and play-based methods. Teachers should look for ways to incorporate ABA strategies like reinforcement in their everyday classroom interactions.

ASD and nonmedical Interventions
Developmental, behavioral, educational, and communication interventions are the primary treatment modalities for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) for children under 5 has shown low to moderate evidence of effectiveness in improving core ASD symptoms and behaviors. EIBI combined with developmental relationship-based approaches like the Early Start Denver Model show moderate evidence for improving social, cognitive, and adaptive skills. The Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) program provides structured environments and activities and has low evidence for improving skills in children, adolescents, and adults.
Session #16 The Trauma Informed Paraeducator

It is important to set a positive tone in the classroom by having clear rules and expectations, providing structure and consistency, and acknowledging students. We should avoid power struggles by giving students choices, thanking them, and using "I messages". Providing a supportive academic environment and allowing "think time" can help students learn and reduce conflicts.
ADHD and its strategies
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is one of the most common childhood disorders. There are three main subtypes - combined, predominantly inattentive, and predominantly hyperactive/impulsive. Evidence-based treatments include pharmacological interventions like stimulants and non-stimulants as well as behavioral therapies targeting things like parenting skills, classroom management, and social skills training. Exercise and physical activity are also important non-pharmacological interventions for managing ADHD symptoms. Consistency, routines, organization, and a structured environment are key to supporting children with ADHD.

- 2. ● ABA is the “science of human behavior” ● What do we want to see a student do more often? Less often? ● Practice makes perfect ● Rewarding success rather than punishing failure ● Myth: It can only be used for students or people with autism.
- 3. • Enhances and improves the everyday life of the learner and those who are closest to the learner (parents, siblings, family, etc) by changing a socially significant behavior.
- 4. • Behavior chosen must be observable and measurable • Something you can see or hear, count and/or time • By defining a behavior that makes it easily observable and measurable, we are able to study it for proof of improvement, as well as lack of improvement. • By defining a behavior, practitioners are able to collect data and show change over time. • What are some examples of something that would meet the behavioral definition in your classroom? • How might this apply to IEPs and personal goals?
- 5. •Focus on teaching kids meaningful developmental and life skills •Individualized treatment – consider age, gender, ethnicity, interests, culture, and family goals •Building fun and positive relationships •We teach new skills using two main types of teaching: Discrete Trial Training (DTT) - more structured; lots of repetition Natural Environment Training (NET) – more natural; play based •Teaching & Rewarding: We help a child to be successful so we can reward their efforts! Over time, reduce our help so they are successful and independent •Shhhh, don’t tell anybody. You can use this in your classroom as well!!
