In whatever professional role in the early childhood field you will find yourself, it will most likely include direct contact with young children and opportunities to witness, in myriad variations, this process of “role making.” Your responsibility is to be mindful of whether children feel secure or insecure in this world, powerful or powerless, safe or marginalized. This assignment offers you the chance to study and evaluate the extent to which your identities are intertwined with the culture(s) in which you place yourself (or into which you were placed) and with the response of people around you. In preparation, first review Chapter 7, pp. 92–105 of the course text, The Developing Child in the 21st Century: A Global Perspective on Child Development and pp.56–60 of the course text, Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves. Then consider the following: What have the readings taught you about the ways in which children try out various identities and explore role-related issues? Focus your analysis especially on issues of power, subjectivity, and responses to diversity. Be sure to reference the resources in your response. From the examples of children’s identities as street workers and/or soldiers, what new insights did you glean with regard to the relationship between diversity and social identities? Think about the specific roles/identities you assumed when you were a child. Why were these identities important to you? In what ways did those around you respond? Which test did you choose, and why? Reflecting on the self-awareness test was interesting. It allowed me to think deeply to give a clear and precise answer. The questions were occasionally considered but never asked how I might I feel about a particular topic. I took the ADDRESSING-GSA- Self-Assessment test to recognize the cultural characteristics of individuals. As social workers, it is essential to adapt and understand people from all different cultural backgrounds. The result from the test shows what areas I was more dominant in and what areas I was less dominant in. The results were not surprising to me, and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better. Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be willing to work on those areas. What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s activities? The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since this is the class that it is being taught. Application: Changing Demographics and Diversity — Connections between Theory and Practice In the article “Beyond the Illusion of Diversity: How Early Childhood Teachers Can Promote Social Justice,” Boutte speaks of the need for early childhood professionals to apply pedagogical principles and classroom practices that more explicitly cultivate inclusive practices. She states that these efforts promote social justice, and passionately advocates that early childhood professionals should be provided with, and seek out, opportunities and resources that support their interactions with children and families from diverse backgrounds. As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience.
