The educational system of the Philippines is facing a fast-changing world in the new millennium. Being
a social studies teacher, how will you pursue your passion or mission in inculcating sociological
imagination to the 21st century learners? Expound your answer.
Sociological imagination in the easiest sense, is the ability to look beyond one’s own understanding,
culture, beliefs, history, sociological, and economical context. It is the ability to comprehend different
scenarios with the capability to look for answers rather than to question why matters, problems, and
conundrums are happening, existing, or evolving.
In the fast-changing world, where students no longer look for their own background to comply and answer
the different questions and scenarios they see, interact to, and live by, it is crucial for the teacher to have
them look at themselves, their personalities, culture, and biases before they render judgment. Nowadays,
young and the old just leave comments on social media, which are not appropriate due to their lack of
sufficient sociological imagination.
Teachers of Araling Panlipunan and Social Studies are crucial in answering these challenges. Teachers of
the said subjects must continuously nurture the sociological imagination of the learners for them to truly
comprehend and solve critically the numerous enigmas they will have to face as they venture on with
their lives. As an Araling Panlipunan teacher, here are the different ways which I help my students improve
their sociological imagination:
1. I will strengthen their ability to spot Trends. Trends are a great way to explain the value of
sociological imagination. Once a learner knows what a trend is, it is easier for them to dissect
different perspectives of why a certain thing or situation becomes popular, including the impact
played by factors such as culture, economic, and sociological forces. In this way, they will also
analyze contextually the fundamental sociological concepts of social institutions and structures,
socialization, power and inequality, and change and movements affect a certain happening, fad,
of product.
2. I will use heavily contextualized learning materials. Contextualization will explain the necessity
of looking into different backgrounds before giving opinions and judgments. If the learners will
understand sociological imagination through contextualization, it will be easier for them to
comprehend other challenges that may arise even after they move to another location or
situation. Once a learner connects his personal experience to a social issue, the reflections on the
problem at hand will be a price of cake.
3. I will strengthen their research abilities. The best way to assist a learner in finding an answer or
solution to his problem is to improve his knowledge and skills in research. Researches take
different perspectives, and this is the exact goal of the sociological imaginations, the ability to
look beyond your won understanding and consider the different sociological factors that can
affect a matter or situation. If learners will master the ability to research, they will all be critical
thinkers which do not prefer biases but rather answers which come directly from other minds
with different background sociologically.
