This document discusses applying geographical concepts and spatial technology to the Internet of Things (IoT). It defines key IoT concepts like smart cities and describes how objects have spatial properties like location, shape, size, and orientation. Spatial thinking is important for solving problems in the IoT that have a location component. This research is about the development of an EIA(Environmental Impact Assessment) decision support system that effectively integrates and visualizes the results of the EIA review process and related information such as BIM/GIS, modeling data, and sensor data. The final goal is to improve the EIA process so that not only experts but also non-experts can participate in the EIA process and easily understand the EIA statements using innovative technologies such as 3D GIS and Easy Finger real-time simulation. The final system will be developed and opened as an open source. This research is 5 years long project funded by Ministry of Environment, South Korea. This talk will focus on the 1st year's research outcome and future plans.

Abstract: In this paper we present a SOA (Service Oriented Architecture)-based platform, enabling the retrieval and
analysis of big datasets stemming from social networking (SN) sites and Internet of Things (IoT) devices,
collected by smart city applications and socially-aware data aggregation services. A large set of city
applications in the areas of Participating Urbanism, Augmented Reality and Sound-Mapping throughout
participating cities is being applied, resulting into produced sets of millions of user-generated events and
online SN reports fed into the RADICAL platform. Moreover, we study the application of data analytics such
as sentiment analysis to the combined IoT and SN data saved into an SQL database, further investigating
algorithmic and configurations to minimize delays in dataset processing and results retrieval.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

2. Introduction
Smart City:
“A city that makes use of information and communications technologies to
improve the quality of life of its citizens in a sustainable way. A smart city
combines and shares disparate data sets captured by intelligently-
connected infrastructure, people and things, to generate new insights and
provide ubiquitous services that enable
citizens to access information about city services, move around easily,
improve the efficiency of city operations and enhance security, fuel
economic activity and increase resilience to natural disasters”.
3. Internet of Things
• IoT involves extending internet connectivity beyond
standard devices, such as desktops, laptops, smart
phones and tablets, to any range of traditionally dumb
or non-internet-enabled physical devices and everyday
objects. Embedded with technology, these devices can
communicate and interact over the internet, and they
can be remotely monitored and controlled.
5. Spatial Thinking…
• Many problems have a spatial dimension, and to solve them, spatial
algorithms and technology can be applied.
• Geography (location) can be considered an important binding principle in
the IoT.
• Spatial thinking is object-oriented thinking. Every object in the real world
has properties, including spatial properties, such as position, dimension,
and orientation at a certain moment in time.

• On the basis of historical and current data, a
spatial model can predict future situations.
• Model output (predictions) can be used to
initiate precautionary actions on things.
