What is the API Marketplace?
• The API Marketplace is a free, neutral, open platform managed by the Victorian
Government, built on the latest Google Cloud Apigee technology.
• Providers can deploy non-production APIs to a centralised platform which allows
developers to discover and prototype whether an integration is fit-for-purpose, without
exposing a providers’ production data.
• After determining an integration is fit-for-purpose, developers can express interest to
access production data and then are then referred through to providers for onboarding.
• We act as a channel to connect providers with new users to increase utilisation of their
production APIs, and help developers enhance their products and services by reducing
barriers to testing and integration.

• Participants on a platform need to trust a centralised directory
• Collaboration may be blocked due to legal and commercial concerns
• Organisations are having difficulty prioritising budget for this type of
programme
• We want to promote a thriving digital economy and collaborative
ecosystem
• We heard from organisations that, despite being supportive of opening up their systems, were apprehensive
about the entity that would operate a centralised directory
• Security, privacy and commercial concerns were the primary concerns with opening up with competing
commercial interests, quality, IP protection, restrictive terms or conditions, opacity on
publication/advertising incentives
• Many organisations we spoke to in the midst of their transformation programmes had identified public APIs as
an opportunity, there was hesitancy surrounding opportunity availability and concerns about marketing budget
required to stand up a program
• The Victorian Government wants to enable businesses to succeed in the digital economy and we’re committing
resources to help drive innovation and economic activity in the sector
