2. EXPERIMENT 8 ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS
Abstract
Antimicrobial agents are a type of agent that used to kill or inhibit the growth the
bacteria. The agents are divided into disinfectants, antiseptics and antibiotics. Due to
study the killing and inhibiting of bacteria by different microbial agents, an experiment
is carried out with three different types of method: disinfectants with time of contact,
disinfectants with effective concentrations and antiseptic with zone of inhibition.
Besides that, there are two types of bacteria are used in this experiment, E. coli and
sterile mouth swabs bacteria. This experiment will determine whether the killing or
growth of bacteria by microbial agents is affected by the concentration of broth of
bacteria and length of time contact with bacteria. To showed the manipulated
variables, Dettol agent, Listerine mouthwash agent and Colgate mouthwash agent are
used to make sure the result is in accurately. After this experiment, there are no growth
of E. coli bacteria on the nutrient agar plate after 10 minutes with using Dettol
antiseptic agent. For the different concentration of E. coli in saline solution that
contained Dettol agent, there are heavy growth of bacteria in 10-1
concentration of E.
coli bacteria, moderate growth in concentration of 10-2
and 10-3
and light growth of
bacteria in concentration of 10-4
, 10-5
and 10-6
tube. In investigate the minimal
inhibitory concentration or zone of inhibition of bacteria in disinfectant solutions, zone
of inhibition of E. coli in disk that immerse with Listerine mouthwash is larger than disk
immersed with Colgate mouthwash whereas Listerine mouthwash and Colgate
mouthwash is sensitive to sterile mouth swabs bacteria which get the result 8 mm in
Listerine and 7mm in Colgate. In short, the result of experiment is quite acceptable
and able to giving brief explanation.
