4. What is collenchyma tissue ?
The tissue which provide mechanical
support for growing plants
Consists of living cells
Living cells : nucleus, cytoplasm and
vacuole

6. Where can you found collenchyma
cells ?
 Usually found in herbaceous plants below the
epidermis, midrib of the leaves and leaf petioles

 Polygonal in shape and elongated
 The end of cell wall may be tapered
 The cells are closely packed together with very small or no
intercellular air space
 The cell wall are unevenly thickened with deposits of
cellulose(primary wall), pectin and hemicellulose
 The thickenings usually occur at corners of the cell walls
(angular collenchyma)
 Pits are present in the walls

8. What are the functions of collenchyma tissue?
 Provide support for plants ,allowing bending but not breaking
 Provide mechanical support to new developed or growing organs
especially roots and stem
 It allows the cells to expand and be stretched as the young stem
grows
 The thickened edge of collenchyma walls : increases the strength of
tissues
 Can carry out photosynthesis
 Can store starch as food

9. What is the relationship between the structure
of collenchyma and its function ?
 The corners of cell walls are heavily thickened with cellulose
make collenchyma a very strong tissue
 The presence of chloroplast
enable collenchyma cells to photosynthesized
 Have cytoplasm
