Dengue fever is a viral disease characterized by sudden onset of fever over 38°C lasting 5 or more days along with muscle or joint pains, petechiae on the arms, body, feet and legs, a positive tourniquet test and/or low platelet count under 100,000/cu.mm. The most important way to prevent and control dengue fever is to eliminate breeding sites of the Aedes mosquito by maintaining clean surroundings and discarding containers that collect standing water. Fumigation and larvicides may be needed to reduce mosquito density. Continuing health education on prevention, control and management of dengue fever is also important.
