Alcohol consumption amongst youth is not a new issue New Zealand has a long
standing history of alcohol consumption both good and bad. In New Zealand, as is
also around the world, the consumption of alcohol has baggage both good and bad.
It is seen on a positive note as a social enabler, it allows oneself to let their guard
down a bit and feel at ease in situations out of their normal comfort zones, however
to every story there is also a flip side, and this is the idea that alcohol consumption is
the cause of social harm.
These views are also reflected in the thoughts of many New Zealander s today. An
online article, Contrary to belief, we may be losing binge from our drinking culture
(2012) highlights the disparities of views between those who are 50 years or older,
and those I deem part of the youth of New Zealand who are 30 years or younger. The
views show that the older group believe that New Zealanders, especially the younger
demographic have a problem with alcohol consumption, however, those in the
younger group acknowledged that as a society New Zealanders drink excessively,
many argued that we (New Zealand) was no different to any other country in regards
to alcohol consumption.
This perceived social norm of excessive drinking highlights the need to further
explore how as a society we can change the social norm so excessive drinking is not
an issue without stigmatizing a particular segment of society.

The song, Blackbird, was written by the iconic British boy band The Beatles in
1968. During this time period, the civil rights movement was on the rise and people
had very conflicted views about racism and how they should cope with it. Innocent
lives were lost and people were struggling both physically and emotionally. Blackbird
s lyrics and melody gives you a taste of that struggle and pain those individuals went
through in their lives. The song is expressing about having perseverance and faith in
the midst of trials that come your way.
Therefore, the song starts itself off with a calm melody and the following lyrics,

thinking of a bird literally singing in the night. However, when further explored in

night, singing to themselves, it is clear they are lonely and have nobody to be around

Letter to the Author
The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck, takes place in La Paz Mexico. The begins
with a description of the family in the first few pages of the book. The family
consists of, a couple, and one toddler. Juana, the wife of Kino, and mother of
Coyotito.
After the description of the family, the book continues with a scary problem.
Coyotito is sleeping and as he is sleeping, Kino notices a scorpion crawl down the
rope that is connected to the hanging box Coyotito lies on. Kino attempts to catch the
scorpion but Coyotito moves and makes the scorpion fall on him. Although, Kino
eventually kills the scorpion, sadly Coyotito was still stung by the scorpion.
The couple and a couple of neighbors, rush Coyotito to the local doctor. The doctor
refused to treat Coyotito because the family could not afford to treat Coyotito.
Kino and Juana leave the doctors and take Coyotito down near the sea, where Juana
uses a seaweed poultice on Coyotito s shoulder, which is now swollen. Kino then
jumps from his canoe for oysters in an attempt to find pearls. Kino eventually finds a
surprisingly large oyster. When he opens the oyster, he soon finds out there is a large
pearl that is worth more than he can count.
Reading through the book, I noticed that they rarely used figurative language. Let s
be honest, figurative language is way more entertaining then with a book or passage
with no figurative language. The book is still well written with an entertaining plot
in my opinion and maybe there is figurative language but I haven t noticed since the
book is over 50 years old. Let s get back to the story.
Kino puts back his head and howls, causing the other pearl divers to look up and
race toward Kino s canoe.
Soon, everyone in La Paz finds out that Kino has found such an amazing pearl. The
doctor who refused to treat Coyotito decides to visit Kino. Kino s neighbors begin to
feel bitter toward him for his good fortune, but neither Kino nor Juana realize this
feeling they have engendered.
Kino s brother, Juan Thomas, asks Kino what he will do with his fortune. Kino

desire and death. It explores the corrupted desires of society, while counterbalancing

Justinian, attempted to reconquer Roman lands, but in doing so, left his own land in

Rooster is a dance piece choreographed by Christopher Bruce. It was originally
premiered by the Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve in 1991. It is a contemporary
ballet piece performed by ten dancers to eight of The Rolling Stones most memorable
hits.
Christopher Bruce based the production on the sexual war he witnessed growing up
in the 1960 s. His intention was to celebrate the music of The Rolling Stones and use
the qualities of the songs to reflect this. The production is set in the 1960 s when the
rights of males and females began to equalise.
The lighting during the performance of Rooster is mostly dark and dull. It is very
simple with slight colour changes at times, but for the majority of ... Show more
The women were able to take off their red scarves to represent them taking a stand
against the men. They are trying to become independent and unique. The male soloist
is wearing a red shirt to show that he is becoming different to the other males. Red is
the inferior colour which could symbolise him becoming more like the women and
less masculine than the other men.
Rooster is performed on an undecorated stage. It is supposed to be presented as a
Saturday night at a club or party. At one point the women have red scarves which
they remove from their neck to dance with. In Play with Fire the female soloist also
has a red feather bower.
The music throughout the performance is by The Rolling Stones. The first song,
Little Red Rooster is very laid back and lazy sounding. It has a slow but consistent
tempo throughout the song. The second song, Lady Jane has a very slow tempo.
This is possibly because it contains lots partner work. The third song, Not Fade
Away is significantly faster than the previous songs. There is also lots of clapping
in time with the music which gives it a kind of celebratory feel. The fourth song,
As Tears Go By once again has a slow tempo. It has a very relaxed feel at the same
time as being sad. This assists in developing the choreographers intent because in this
section the female dancer is being rejected. The fifth song, Paint it Black is where the
