Music therapy: A critical discussion

This assignment explores music as a means of therapy for people living with dementia. Looking at the neurophysiological side of the disease, music therapy could be utilised as a way of changing behaviour that could be labelled as disruptive or unacceptable to the rest of society. Considering the important role that music plays in the lives of many people, cultures and societies and the need of people living with dementia to connect, engage, grow and flourish, music can and should play a much larger role in creating a life worth living for people with dementia. Music should be made part of the person-centred approach to care and not be simply used to entertain, distract or to blur out background sounds. The difficulty of capturing the true emotional spectrum of what music can do for and to the human soul is clear in the research. The practical implementation of music in the care setting should be carefully considered to take into consideration the individuality of each person living with dementia, as well as those who care for them.

A group of friends were discussing mu sic appropriate for particular life occa sions: birthdays, anniversaries, achieve ments, celebrations of homecoming, retirement. Then came the question about music and the end of life. In one sense, the question is quite familiar to musicians who are called upon to plan funerals and memorial services. To paraphrase a famous hymn, “What language shall we borrow” to mark the final passage of human life? What shall confer dignity and final meaning that also echoes the faith of a community assembled to give thanks for a life re cently completed? Some in the group thought immedi ately of songs of triumph, others of gratitude, others of rest and serenity. One of us desired the final chorale of Bach’s St. John Passion sung by a choir. The hymn “Love Divine, All Loves Ex celling” seemed sufficient to another. Still others spoke of using Palestrina’s “Sicut Cervus,” Vaughan Williams’s “O How Amiable,” Howells’s “Hymnus Paradisi,” or Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium.” One of the organists chose Messiaen’s “Celestial Banquet.” Obviously, many diverse convictions, musi cal and theological, were at play in our conversation. If we had not been professional church musicians, the choices might have been very different. There would be the deceased’s favorite hymns. Many of us have played or sung the requested “The Old Rugged Cross” or “I Come to the Garden Alone.” More recently, some have requested popular contemporary praise songs, or secular love songs from certain periods of the person’s life. However wide the range of responses, our question prompts reflection about how and why music is related to grief and joy, gratitude and sorrow on the occasion of saying farewell to life itself. Apart from ritual songs such as the Kol Nidre, or chanted prayers from a Requiem Mass, what hymns, songs, or instrumental music reaches to the emotional depths required by the passage from life to death? It is common these days to hear people talk about the “sound track” of their lives. For them music serves like a film score, ex pressing significant memories while supplying a narrative of what is experienced over time: childhood, family, friendships, loves gained and lost, as well as remembered moods of particular times and places. While nostalgia sometimes rules, my experi ence tells me that we need music that expresses emotions that ac company life passages through time. “Time like an ever rolling stream, bears all who live away . . . ” sings the familiar hymn. Discussions of personal choices of music to mark the end of life reveal a set of tensions: between expressing an individual’s life and proclaiming the community’s faith in the face of human mortality. Consider what it means to come to final measures of a great piece of mus.

Music is thus not so much a noun as a verb, ‘to music'. 'l'o music is to take part in any capacity in a musicalperfiirmance. and the meaning of musicking lies in the relationships that are established between the participants by the performance. Music/ting is part of that iconic, gestural process of giving and receiving information about relationships which unites the living world, and it is in fact a ritual by means of which the participants not only learn about. but directly experience. their concepts of how they relate. and how they ought to relate, to other human beings and to the rest of the world. These ideal relationships are often extremely complex. too complex to be articulated in words. but they are articulated effortlessly by the musical performance, enabling the participants to explore. affirm andcelebrate them. Musicking is thus as central in importance to our humanness as is taking part in speech acts, and all normally endowed human beings are born capable of taking part in it, not just of understanding the gestures but of making their own. I offer here some thoughts on some abiding issues concerning the nature of the musical act and its function in human life. I have been thinking about this for the last few years as l have been writing my third book, which bears the same title as this paper‐Musicking: The Meanings of Performing and Listening. In doing so I make no claim to speak ex cathedra or to tell anyone what they ought or ought not to be doing; rather I want to offer such philosophical support asI can in these confused and worrying times to those who are actually out there doing the work. to clarify as best I can the reasons why I am certain that music is of central importance in human life and to be defended stoutly, not only in the education of the young but as a lifelong practice. For more years than I care to think about I have been worrying away at the question. or rather, a pair of questions: “What is the nature of music?" and “What is the function of music in human life?"‐‐in the life. that is, of every single member of the human species? Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. • The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
