Call for Applications, Workshop on "Minorities and Popular Culture in the Mod...Encyclopaedia Iranica
Thanks to modern mass communication media and commercial entertainment, popular culture has increasingly become a large industry geared for massive consumption while engendering and contesting national and communal identities. Since late nineteenth century, Middle Eastern minorities have contributed to the making of popular culture industries as public performers, producers, writers, filmmakers, musicians, etc. Meanwhile, popular culture has been a crucial tool in constructing public imagery of both majority and minority ethnic and religious communities. Thus, popular culture has been a site of contradictions and contestations.
This workshop aims at exploring the contribution of all religious and ethnic minorities to the popular culture industries and how popular culture products have represented minorities and dealt with the minority question in modern Middle East during the twentieth century and at present. The workshop hopes to examine national, regional, and cross-regional case studies covering the area from Iran to Morocco, from Turkey to Sudan and beyond. Comparative and diasporic studies are particularly welcome.

Wassoulou is a type of semi-acoustic music that has been popular in Mali since the 1970s.
This paper, an ethnography of wassoulou, traces its roots to the music of masquerade and
the hunters' traditions of the Wasulu region in the south, and explores the ways in which
the cultural worlds of these traditions are evoked through the music. Wassoulou
performers are called birds (kono) and occupy a social r0le that allows them to comment
on social issues with impunity, with gender playing an important part.

Gabriel Okara's Postcolonial Vision: 'You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed' a...Jheel Barad
This presentation was presented in class presentation on M.A. English in the Department of English, MKBU. It deals with a paper titled African Literature, Gabriel Okara's Postcolonial Vision: 'You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed' and 'The Piano and The Drums'. This presentation inspects the postcolonial aspects in Gabriel Okara's poem 'You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed' and 'The Piano and The Drums'.
Abstract
The study examines the promise of political independence and the pains of dashed hope in post-
colonial Africa with particular focus on the poor political leadership factor. For analytical
convenience, particular focus is on Nigeria, which provides a good framework for the promise of
independence and the pains of dashed hope in post-colonial Africa. The study acknowledges the
efforts put forward by African nationalist leaders in the struggle for the liquidation of colonialism
and national liberation but argues, however, that nearly sixty years after the majority of African
countries gained political independence, the promise of liberation from poverty, disease and
underdevelopment as well as the enthronement of enduring genuine democracy and good
governance, are far from being achieved. It argues further that Africa's hope of a better tomorrow at
independence faded away very quickly almost immediately after independence and became a
crumbling dream with pains, resulting in various crises, including devastating civil wars. It was
against this background that citizens without hope of better tomorrow were seen all over the
continent carrying faces of agony and pains, relishing in despair and frustration, and were poised to
destroy their various countries. Although several factors could be advanced to explain this situation,
this study focuses on the poor political leadership factor. The study essentially adopts a historical
approach and relies on literary sources for its analysis. It concludes by advocating a review of the
process of political leadership recruitment in the continent so that selfless, credible, visionary and
nationalistic leaders could emerge in the various countries. It also advocates the strengthening of
democratic and political institutions, which could operate and guide the conduct of politics.

popular cultural is an important means of understanding any era in history. What people are watching, listening to, reading, making, and doing can tell us a lot about the time and society in which they lived the technology, the social norms, class difference, societal tensions, and more. In class we discussed how black culture started making its way into the mainstream in the 1930s. We also saw how music was used during the great depression era, and watched a film meant to illustrate the dangers of marijuana use amongst teens. For this exam, you are going to analyze an elemnt of 1930s popular culture. You will pick a topic ( a person, a film, an event, a radio show, a sport, etc.) and explain its history and background.
You will examine how the topic you picked reflects the time in which it was popular.
Why did it spread?
What did it mean to people?
What were the technologies involved?
Who was the audience?
was anyone excluded?
What else was going in America and around the world at the time?
These are just a few of the questions you can address in your essay as you try to understand a popular cultural phenomenon of the interwar period.
Topic ideas:
Speakeasies,dance halls and other hangouts.
Jazz( a specific jazz musician, a type of jazz, etc.)
Movies
Music
Popular literature
Boxing, basketball, &other sports Charles Lindbergh
Drug culture
Folklore & urban legends
Sensational crimes
.
Let's play!
Seriously, let us play!
Life isn't a game but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be playful. After all, there's a lot more to playfulness than fun and games. Creativity, freedom, friendship… What are we without a sense of play?

BuddyPress, the social network based on WordPress, is becoming more and more common in academic environments where it is used for organization, communication and learning. In this discussion we will go beyond the practical and into the human side of things to consider what effects social software might be having in the world of academia. Can we use our tools to get people to think differently? Does the use of open tools help bring openness to the context where they are used? Are BuddyPress and WordPress the best tools for the job? This talk will take the form of a guided discussion including the entire audience.
