4. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by the Antarctic
ice sheet which are at least 1.6 km thick .
If all the ice were melted sea level would rise
about 60 m .
Antarctica is plagued by anthropogenic pollution,
ozone degradation, heightened co2 level,
increased lead concentrations and tangible human
waste.
The temperature is very low in this reason its goes
down to -82 degree Celsius.
5. The degradation in the Antarctic region is a
result of internal, yet mostly external
anthropogenic activities.
Small particulates destroy ozone during cold
Antarctic winters when stratospheric clouds
form.
Lead pollution has found its way to Antartica,
it has also been found in the wildlife
surrounding Antarctica.
6.
7. Due to global warming the melting rate of
the Antarctic ice sheet in the last decade
increase rapidly.
WWF claims- Penguin population could
decline by 95% by the end of 21st century.
The mean annual air temperature of the
Antarctic Peninsula has increased by nearly
3°C in the region in last few years.
8.
9. Several nations have implemented sustainable
practices domestically, as well as within
Antarctica.
The United Kingdom, the United States, and
Australia have not only signed the Protocol for
Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty,
they mandate specific rules for activities within
their countries as well as on Antarctica.
All waste that is produced by the organization on
Antarctica, except for sewage and food waste, is
removed from the continent in a timely manner.
10. Antarctic pollution is the result of human
occupation on earth. The pollution currently
degrading the Antarctic environment affects not
just the continent, but the world as a whole.
If Antarctic ice sheets were to melt, the United
States and the rest of the world would be
inundated with water.
Not just would coastlines be eliminated, currents
would change, temperatures would fluctuate,
and entire species would go extinct.
Humans should realize that anthropogenic
pollution is detrimental to earth as a whole.
