Alvy Singer, a twice divorced Jewish comedian, reflects on the demise of his relationship with Annie Hall, an insecure Midwestern singer. Unlike his past relationships, Alvy believed he had worked through his issues in therapy to make this relationship last. However, he reviews how facets of his upbringing and personality led to problems. These include growing up in Brooklyn with arguing parents and feeling Jewish guilt. He analyzes both the highs and lows of his relationship with Annie from his neurotic perspective.

IntroductionOne Story of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
From P. K. Philips's essay "My Story of Survival: Battling PTSD,"
It is a continuous challenge living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and I've suffered from it for most of my life. I can look back now and gently laugh at all the people who thought I had the perfect life. I was young, beautiful, and talented, but unbeknownst to them, I was terrorized by an undiagnosed debilitating mental illness.
Having been properly diagnosed with PTSD at age 35, I know that there is not one aspect of my life that has gone untouched by this mental illness. My PTSD was triggered by several traumas, most importantly a sexual attack at knifepoint that left me thinking I would die. I would never be the same after that attack. For me there was no safe place in the world, not even my home. I went to the police and filed a report. Rape counselors came to see me while I was in the hospital, but I declined their help, convinced that I didn't need it.
This would be the most damaging decision of my life.
For months after the attack, I couldn't close my eyes without envisioning the face of my attacker. I suffered horrific flashbacks and nightmares. For four years after the attack I was unable to sleep alone in my house. I obsessively checked windows, doors, and locks. By age 17, I'd suffered my first panic attack. Soon I became unable to leave my apartment for weeks at a time, ending my modeling career abruptly. This just became a way of life. Years passed when I had few or no symptoms at all, and I led what I thought was a fairly normal life, just thinking I had a "panic problem."
Then another traumatic event retriggered the PTSD. It was as if the past had evaporated, and I was back in the place of my attack, only now I had uncontrollable thoughts of someone entering my house and harming my daughter. I saw violent images every time I closed my eyes. I lost all ability to concentrate or even complete simple tasks. Normally social, I stopped trying to make friends or get involved in my community. I often felt disoriented, forgetting where, or who, I was. I would panic on the freeway and became unable to drive, again ending a career. I felt as if I had completely lost my mind. For a time, I managed to keep it together on the outside, but then I became unable to leave my house again.
Around this time I was diagnosed with PTSD. I cannot express to you the enormous relief I felt when I discovered my condition was real and treatable. I felt safe for the first time in 32 years. Taking medication and undergoing behavioral therapy marked the turning point in my regaining control of my life. I'm rebuilding a satisfying career as an artist, and I am enjoying my life. The world is new to me and not limited by the restrictive vision of anxiety. It amazes me to think back to what my life was like only a year ago, and just how far I've come.

1. Psychology is defined as the scientific study of behavior. (the psychology majors handbook). Though I feel most TV shows and or movies have some form of a psychological based plot, because its so broad. However I want to focus on a TV show called "The Good Doctor". This is a series about a doctor who is on the Autism spectrum. Autism refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication... Autism is a spectrum disorder each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. (what is autism). this show was my top pick because, taking a look more into psychology as stated in the text topics of psychology study includes relationships, the brain and the chemicals that influence it, visual and auditory perception, human development, the causes of normative and atypical behavior, and much more. In the show they focus on the main character who has autism but is so smart and they show his strengths analyze the body and research in a different, more in depth way that the typical doctors do. They show how he is socially awkward and how the typical doctors may accept him and how some don't because they feel he has a disorder and doesn't belong in the medical field. the show touches base on his difficulty fitting into the culture but also show how he fits in in his own unique way.
2. The TV show that comes to mind when I think of a TV show in which psychology played an important role is a show, I am currently watching called Blindspot. Psychology is a big factor in this show because a woman had her memory erased and had herself dropped in the middle of Times Square. When found, she had tattoos all over her body, which helped the FBI save many lives. It turns out that she was a part of a terrorist organization that wanted to bring the country down. With all of that being said, when she first got to the FBI, they had a psychologist talk to her to try and help her understand her feelings and help her engage with the man she had grown to like. In the end, the psychologist was also a part of the terrorist organization and was manipulating the woman during her sessions to make her think she liked the man so she could get close to him because they needed him to be a part of their plan to bring down the country. Psychology was also a big factor because growing closer to the man she liked, who was the assistant director of the FBI and a good person, he helped her be a better person. With all of her memory gone he also made her think she was his best friend who had gone missing when he was a child, when if fact she was not this little girl at all.
3. When I think of psychology in relation to a tv show or movie, I think of a Netflix series that I recently watched titled "YOU." I feel that psychology definitely played a major part in the way the main character Joe interacted with everyone that he encountered or had some type of relationship with. The mai ...
Chapter 2 - psychoanalysis
Sigmund Freud
Born 1856 – What was going on in the united states?
Franklin Pierce was president of the U.S.
The Civil War in the United States was still a few years away (1861).
A lot of people die in Kansas over slavery.
500 Mormons leave Iowa City, headed for Salt Lake City.
Early life
Born in Moravia in Czechoslovakia in 1856 to a Jewish family
Had a very loving and protective mother; stern and authoritarian father (20 years older than his mother).
His father was a widower. From his father’s first marriage he had two elder brothers, one of which had a son Sigmund’s age. So… Sigmund was born an uncle.
Freud and his family moved to Vienna when he was four years of age. He stayed there close to 80 years, moving only when the Nazi party took power in 1938.
Freud was the oldest of his five siblings and given preferential treatment.
He had dreams of becoming a general or lawyer, but because he was a Jew he couldn’t.
He began medical studies at the University of Vienna and graduated 8 yrs. later.
Professional life
He established a practice as a clinical neurologist in 1881.
Freud made notable contributions to research. Developing a method to of staining cells for microscopic study.
As a physician, he explored the anesthetic properties of cocaine.
In his private practice Freud focused on the study of neurosis (emotional disturbances.)
He released Interpretation of Dreams in 1900.
There was a group of doctors who worked in Vienna that would hang out and talk: Jung, Adler, Jones, Brill, Sandor.
Origins of psychoanalysis
On his return from France, Freud became influenced by a Viennese physician and friend, Joseph Breuer.
Psychoanalysis began with the case history of Joseph Breuer’s patient, Anna O.
Psychoanalysis - A treatment approach based on the observation that individuals are often unaware of many of the factors that determine their emotions and behavior. These unconscious factors may be the source of considerable distress and unhappiness, and other troubling personality traits.
Anna O. experienced what is now know as conversion disorder (called hysteria at the time)
Breuer used hypnosis and “talking method”
After talking about her father’s illness and death, Anna experienced catharsis (emotional release), and her symptoms were relieved.
She became very attached to Dr. Breuer causing problems with his wife… she offered him a phantom pregnancy as her last symptom.
Freud starts working more on his own…
Freud used the “talking method” to assist his patients in remembering past traumatic events first through hypnosis, but later abandoned this technique when he realized that not all patients could be hypnotized.
Unconscious processes (forces unaware to the person)
Resistance: force that prevents the patient from becoming aware of events and keeps them in the unconscious – not allowing painful memories into consciousness… no ill effects
Repression: blocking of a wish or desire (strong emotions evoked fr ...

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

1. Part I. Brief Summary of the Movie Annie hall
Alvy Singer, a forty-year-old twice divorced, neurotic, intellectual Jewish New York stand-up
comic, reflects on the demise of his latest relationship, to Annie Hall, an insecure, flighty,
Midwestern WASP aspiring nightclub singer. Unlike his previous relationships, Alvy believed he
may have worked out all the issues in his life through fifteen years of therapy to make this
relationship with Annie last, among those issues being not wanting to date any woman that would
want to date him, and thus subconsciously pushing those women away. Alvy not only reviews the
many ups and many downs of their relationship, but also reviews the many facets of his makeup that
led to him starting to date Annie. Those facets include growing up next to Coney Island in Brooklyn,
being attracted to the opposite sex for as long as he can remember, and enduring years of Jewish
guilt with his constantly arguing parents.

tension or sleep problems. Anxiety or worry that causes you significant distress or interferes with
your daily life.
Part IV. What is the Etiology of the Disorder using the different approaches in Abnormal Psychology
(e.x Brain structure, biochemical)
Biological Approach
The biological approach to abnormal psychology focuses on the medical issues that underlie the
mental illness. These issues may involve physical illness, damage or lesions to the brain or chemical
imbalances. Biological treatments are often pharmacological; that is, most biological treatments
involve drugs.
Psychodynamic Approach
The psychodynamic approach views abnormality as a result of conflict between unconscious urges
and conscious desires. Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychodynamic theory, said that when conflict
in early life is not resolved, we repress things and that leads to mental illness.
Behavioral Approach
The behavioral approach to abnormal psychology is about the observable behaviors of the patient.
Behavioral psychologists believe that we learn behaviors through a complex system of rewards and
punishments. Behavioral treatments focus on changing the behaviors of the mentally ill, not on
addressing the underlying causes of the behaviors. In the case of Jenni, a behavioral therapist would
look at Jenni's behaviors of disengaging from her friends and staying in bed all day as the main
problem. They would seek to either punish these behaviors or reward good behaviors, like when she
socializes or gets up and goes to work.
4. Cognitive Approach
Psychologists who follow the cognitive approach explain abnormality in terms of the thought
processes of the patient. Thought processes and perceptions are viewed as a major force on the
mentally ill, and treatment focuses on changing maladaptive thought patterns.
Humanistic Approach
The humanistic approach says that abnormality occurs when people are not able to be their authentic
selves. According to humanistic psychology, people can only be their authentic selves when their
physical and social needs are met first. However, because many people do not have those needs met,
they are not able to pursue their deepest, truest passions.
