After the Ottoman defeat in World War I, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk established the headquarters of the Turkish nationalist movement in Ankara in 1920. Ankara officially replaced Constantinople as the new Turkish capital on October 13, 1923. Since becoming the capital, Ankara has grown tremendously from a small town of little importance. Every year on October 13th, Turkey celebrates making Ankara the capital with a ceremony that includes students and soldiers. The Etimesgut International Anatolian Days Festival is held each September in Etimesgut to bring together Turkish cultures and promote friendship between nations through concerts and Turkish cuisine.
