Examples Of Narcissism In The Incredibles
The movie, The Incredibles, focuses on the lives of the Parr family, which consists of Bob,
Helen, Violet, Dash, and Jack Jack, and their not so ordinary lives doubling as superheroes. Bob,
also known as Mr. Incredible, and Helen, also known as Elastigirl, have tried to keep the
families super hero abilities under wraps since starting a family and after an incident involving
Bob that led to the banning of all super heroes. Bob s reminiscing of his old life as a super hero
leads to him becoming once again involved in super hero activities as a way to escape from his
mundane job and life and find the thrill of a life of adventure that he once had. Helen soon
becomes suspicious of the changes she sees in Bob and begins to investigate. Once she finds out
what is truly going on Bob has already found himself in some danger with the antagonist,
Syndrome, and she comes to the rescue. What she does not know is that the kids, Violet and Dash,
have also caught onto this and have decided to join in to help save the family and the world while

Narcissism is someone who is extremely obsessed with themselves and someone who wants
admiration and is so selfish they will do whatever it takes to get what they want. Syndrome feels
like he is the best and most powerful super ever and creates a persona of being powerful and
better than others. He works to make sure everything he is surrounded with is top of the line and
reflects it all back on himself. Syndrome wants to be the only super and will destroy everyone
else on his way to get there. He works constantly to fulfill his inner desires and does not care how
they affect others. This is seen when he releases a giant destructive robot into society just so he
can defeat it and save the day and be a hero. He does not consider how this will affect innocent
people and only considers the benefits it has for

Why Is Apollo 13 Wrong
Apollo 13 was first scheduled for March 1970 but eventually was shifted for April that year. Some
spectators believe it was because one of the oxygen tank in the service module encountering a
problem during testing, and it should not have been ignored. Only the third intended mission to the
moon and it wouldn t quite make it. On April 13, 1970 two days after Apollo 13lifted off something
went wrong. The three men, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise trained as any other
astronaut would, but what happened was unpredictable. The three men had just finished a broadcast
to the citizens back home without many people joined watching. It was 56 hours into the mission
where a cryo stir had occurred this caused Oxygen tank 2 in the service module... Show more

They could see the symptoms easily enough lack of power, lack of oxygen but had no clue about
the underlying disease that had befallen their ship (Bizony). Unfortunately the men only had a
small triangular window to look out onto the ship. When one of the astronauts finally saw a
large clue Lovell called in that he had seen a gas blowing into space. The substance coming out
happened to be from the cryogenic tank explosion, but how did it happen? Not long after the
Apollo 13 accident, they put months of investigation in and just happened to find out where the
mistake was made. Back in 1968while the oxygen tanks were being manufactured one of them
happened to be dropped, but the tank still passed it s quality checks and was sent out.
Meanwhile, three weeks before Apollo 13 there was a test run on the cryogenic tanks and how
they can carry their load. Every tank gets pre flight testing but when this particular tank was
tested it seemed to show it had a damaged fill line. Meaning it would not empty the contents as
desired. When the tank was getting pre flight tests the tanks were emptied by forcing oxygen gas
into the tank and the liquid oxygen was forced out, but while in space the tanks did not need to
be emptied. Heaters were located in the tank in order to heat the inside of it to keep the oxygen
flowing and this would only be used for short periods of time. The plan was to use these heaters
to essentially boil off any excess oxygen, this would then need 8 hour of 65 volt DC power. The
thermostatically controlled switches on the heater were only made for 28 volt DC power so this
led people to believe they were damaged from that mistake. This would then cause the switches to
weld shut meaning the temperature would rise over 1000 degrees F inside the tank.

Fadia Faqir’s Pillars of Salt Essay
Fadia Faqir s Pillars of Salt The fictional accounts of women s experiences in Fadia Faqir s,
Pillars of Salt, illustrate issues articulated by women s rights activists in the Middle East.
Traditional roles of women and men and a mythology of femininity and masculinity are juxtaposed
with the disparate realities of the characters. The damaging forces of colonial rule, war, and
Westernization are also exposed. I focused particularly on Pillars of Salt, because it contains very
sophisticated juxtapositions of women s reality and mythological accounts of women. It also
demonstrates that issues of gender roles are much more complicated than a hierarchy of cruel,
powerful men, bent on tradition who maintain the system and progressive... Show more content on

Furthermore, women are often seen as a symbol of cultural preservation and a measure of
family honor. In conditions of war and colonial rule, which represents an attack on men s honor
and dignity, attention to women s roles as prescribed by cultural tradition is often intensified.
However, the unusual conditions of war and resistance to colonial rule also may provide
openings for women to reconfigure their roles and rights, based on new needs of society. People
are fed dreams, stuffed with dreams the way I used to stuff the hens with grain. Suddenly you
discover that what you have been eating all these years is dust and what you have been drinking
is just thin air. (p. 223) In this section of the paper I would like to examine character s relation to
and the ways in which they internalize the mythology of their culture. The book displays many
elements of mythology which are quite removed from actual experience and yet become a part
of characters identity and gain a certain power in their minds. The storyteller s narrations are an
obvious example of a sort of mythology. He voices a stream of rumors of the village garnished
with religious invocations which lend his tales legitimacy. The love songs (as well as the
cinema), which play a particularly key role in Um Saad s narratives, are another imaginary
depiction of a woman s experience, which guide Um Saad to beliefs of what she may expect from
life and love. The recurring

Analysis Of Educating Rita
Educating Rita: A Realistic Film From the Director s Perspective
Educating Rita is a realistic look at a woman s journey to change and find herself. The director
keeps the film simple while watching her overcome a lack of confidence and other obstacles. The
film is considered a comedy but is still a relatable story because the director represented Rita s
character as she really would be(dictionary.com).
Rita, real name Susan, is a young married hairdresser that wants to get an education. Frank is an
alcoholic literature teacher who is assigned to help her through the program she enrolled in. Both
have rocky relationships and the audience could easily assume they end up falling for each
other(Maslin). Rita has a thirst for knowledge but little understanding of what she is quoting. Rita
makes new friends and tries new things. She even marvels at how much she liked seeing
Macbeth(Maslin). By the end of the movie she gains an understanding of her education and passes
her test with distinction. Through this series of events both characters end up single, yet part in the
same manor that they met(Maslin).
Lewis Gilbert, the director of the film, had the responsibility of using all the elements of film to
interpret the writers ideas(dictionary.com). In Educationg Rita he uses realistic lighting and very
little mood music to indicate how the viewer should feel during the scene. Another way a director
can get a viewer to feel a certain way or to focus on a particular conversation, is

Analysis Of George Orwell s 1984-Personal Narrative
The Kingdom of Sienna was beautiful place. The bustling streets were filled with shops, eateries,
and beautiful parks for the citizens and sightseers. In the center of it all was the castle. The huge
castle would put any mansion to shame; the courtyards and numerous towers made it captivating
to any passerby. Unfortunately this is not where our story begins. We must first venture out of the
city to the nearby rural outskirts of Sienna. Not many people live here, which is quite a shame.
Beautiful flora and fauna cover this area; it all serves as inspiration for poor old Winston. Winston
was once a drifter who settled here. With no familyor friends, he spends his time writing poetry

The two men spent all night writing, and in the morning they had finally completed their poems.
The king took the poems and immediately recognized the true poet. He summoned his guards and
they took Isaac to the dungeon.
Dear Winston, I am so thankful for your poems. I would like to invite to come stay at my grand
castle and write poems for me. said the king happily, but Winston politely declined his offer.
Your highness, unfortunately I mustn t go to the castle. These forests are my home and without
their inspiration I can t write.
Well then, I have an idea that will benefit us both. stated the king. He had his best architects build
a wonderful home in Winston s beloved forest and provided Winston with good food and
protection as long as he kept writing poems for him. So for the rest of his days Winston lived

Current Management Techniques, And Make Recommendations On...
The purpose of this memo is to survey our current management techniques, and make
recommendations on where we can improve our current model. The real estate industry is a
cyclical market. We can observe almost regular 18 year cycles in the housing market, with the last
recession occurring in 2008 (Nikolais, 2014). With this regularity, it has been very easy to predict
when expansions will occur, which in turn allows real estatefirms to position themselves in a way
to fully capture the market. However, the last bust in 2008 has been much different. For the first
time in history, people are electing to rent, rather than buy their home. This can be seen in a
recent survey by MarketWatch: Nearly six in 10 Millennials (59%) say they d rather rent a home
than buy one, with just one in four saying they are either very or completely likely to purchase a
home in the next five years (MarketWatch, 2015). The reason for this change in behavior is that
first time homebuyers are burdened with nearly $1 Trillion in student loan debt (Kingkade, 2013).
This pressure has made younger people wary of taking on even more debt in the form of a
mortgage loan.
On a broader level, we are six years into a recovery in the housing market that is likely to last for a
considerable amount of time (Nikolais, 2014). Although we are seeing a rise in demand, and have
been very busy as of late, there are always areas in which we can improve. Recent trends in
technology have reshaped the way businesses are

Environmental Factors Of The Automotive Industry
Introduction Automobile usage has increased in America and elsewhere in the world. In a research
done by Sutherland, J., et al. (2004) The US has a contributed to 200 million passengers in cars and
light truck over the past few years. Further in 1990, studies showed that US cars increased six times
faster than human population. The leaders in the automotive industrymust adopt some key elements
to ensure success in this fast moving environment. They must invest in knowing their markets,
building brands, adapting product strategies and taking long term view on their goals and
objectives. This paper outlines some of the key factors which should be considered. Environmental
factors automotive designers and engineers have always said the main threats in the American
Automotive industry are the environmental factors such as fuel economy and the clean air
regulations. Automotive Emission posed different problems than manufacturing discharges such as
coal smoke. Increased fossil fuel emission has resulted from the million car increase. Irritation
smog, which is comprised of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, sulfur oxide and other various
chemical mixtures are cited in major cities such as Los Angeles. These auto emissions are also said
to cause headaches, visual pollutions, contribute to lung cancers and other respiratory disease. In
the end, the engineers have designed cars that are better environmental performers, cost effective

Examples Of Id, Ego, And Superego In Mary Shelley s...
According to modern psychologists, Sigmund Freud is considered the father of modern
psychology; Freud s idea of the three zones of the psychic apparatus play a heavy influence in
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. The three zones are Id, Ego, and Superego. The Id is natural
instincts, Ego is the influence of the Id caused by society, and the Superego is acting based off of
adopted morals taught to you. The Monster s personality traits in Frankenstein are examples of
Freud s idea of Id, Ego, and Superego. Throughout the novel, each trait is developed with the Id
being first ; and alternating back and forth between all of them on which one becomes the dominant
trait.
When the Monster is first created, he acts on natural instincts to keep himself alive. The Monster
must figure out life on his own because he does not have a parental figure to teach him right
from wrong. The Id instincts take over the Monster s actions I ate some berries...I slaked my
thirst at the brook (Shelley 87). He is predominantly motivated by his self centered id drives due
to his natural instincts of survival. The Monster has no idea that some of his actions are believed
to be immoral by society because his libidinous id is telling him what to do to survive such as to
steal a part of their store in my own consumption (94). Through his selfish actions the Monster
realized that his actions had repercussions I found that in doing this I inflicted pain on the cottagers

Life In A Tide Pool Research Paper
Ocean water is always moving, and gravity from the sun and the moon pulling on the waters of
the ocean causes what s called tides. Each day there are two high tides, when the water moves
higher onto the beach, and two low tides, when the water moves further away from the beach
back out toward the main body of water. A tidepool is a pool of water left behind by the ocean
tides. Oysters, seabirds, blue crabs, and cordgrass can all live in a tidepool. Let s explore the
tidepool habitat.
When high tides come up onto the beach, the water brings animals and plants with it. Tide pools are
formed when low tide takes the water back out toward the sea, and some water gets trapped and
left behind. Things like rocks and low spots, like shallow holes, can keep the water from leaving
the beach area. Plants and animals can make a tidepool their home, or habitat. A habitat is the
environment in which plants and animals live.
Plants and animals in a tidepool habitat live in an aquatic habitat, or water environment. Life in a
tide pool is not easy. Although high tide brings into the tide pool more fresh seawater, animals, and
plants, the waves are very powerful. Also, once low tide happens again, the tide pool begins ... Show

The Critique Of Culture In The Sand Child By Tahar Ben...
Culture is an amalgamation of shared beliefs, values, and norms within a society. Thus, culture has
the ability to influence the way in which one learns, lives, and behaves. When the cultural values
and practices are negative, the fate of a person growing up in this situation can be critically
affected. In The Sand Child, Tahar Ben Jelloun exhibits how the cultural values of the Moroccan
society such as the inheritance law and the social practices such as the blatant rejection and
demeaning treatment of women in society have affected Ahmed, the protagonist, and provide an
insight into Jelloun s critique of those practices. The codification of misogynistic rules that solely

They were right. In this way they rid themselves of misfortune. It was an act of wisdom, a brief
pain, an implacable logic (Jelloun 99). Ahmed s father comes to him in a dream and tells him
that he did not have the courage to proceed with this practice himself, but admires the fathers that
were able to follow through with it. He specifically mentions how Ahmed was saved from this
torturous procedure, as his father chose him to take on the male lead, while on the other hand
his sisters were ignored and were figuratively dead to the father. Although, this cultural practice
did not directly affect Ahmed, nor did it affect his sisters, it affected other female babies in this
society, while also subconsciously affecting Ahmed. This sense of betrayal and guilt has affected
Ahmed s life as it is something that will always follow him because he feels as though he
betrayed his father by not following through with his wishes and becoming the man he had
always wished for. The author may have put this section in because he wanted to demonstrate the
guilt that is subconsciously put onto women. All aspects of a woman s life are criticized merely
for having female body parts and being seen as the weaker gender. These cultural practices are
seen as a normal, wise act done in order to keep the honor in the family. Thus,

Review Of Pieces Mended By Film, And Digital Art
Title: Pieces Mended Modality: Movement, Drama, Film, and Digital Art Materials: Samsung
Galaxy Edge, HP stream, Filmora editing software, and music by The Used. Flashback: The
year was 2002, I was standing on the corner waiting for the van to take me to therapy. The outfit
that day was likely a black hoodie, studded belt, family guy t shirt, skinny jeans, and checkered
vans. The music blasted through foam covered Sony headphones that looped behind my neck.
The song Pieces Mended by The Used (2002) played on a beat up disc man, which was decorated
in yellow caution tape, duct tape, and sharpie marker. Three minutes passed felt more like a decade.
I remember thinking that the entire situation was bullshit and no medication, or amount of therapy
was going to help me. The only ingredients that would ensure a smooth day were whiskey, a wine
flavored dutch, and my bed. The song lyrics supported my decision to ditch therapy that day,
because honestly, what did they know about anything. The lyric, fuck it, I m fine became my motto
for the next few years (The Used, 2002). Present Day Detailed memories from childhood and
adolescence are difficult to remember, but the emotions that arise in association with being fifteen
are difficult to forget. Using music and movement made it easier to embody a younger version of
myself for the Adolescent Mandala assignment. Embodiment meant going back to that song that

Keeping God in the American Culture as Depicted in the Audio Adrenaline Song, Can t Take God

Music has always been a big part of our culture. People sing and listen to songs for entertainment
and for encouragement. Explore folk songs or Negro spirituals for instance. Many slaves sang
spirituals for encouragement and hope to carry them through the rough times they experienced.
Even today, most people enjoy listening to music because they can relate to the things about which
the artists sing. Often artists sing about things that either upset or please them. These days, much of
American music exposes problems in our society. In a song entitled, Can t Take God Away, the

Because the schools aren t allowed to teach that God exists, ( That would be forcing religion on
people; we have to have separation of church and state ) the government is implying that believing
in God isn t important. According to what we re taught, We are all that matters. We re all good
people but we ll be failures if we don t make more money than our parents did.
The song deals next with freedom when it says, You can take my life, my land my liberty/Lock
me up, I ll still be free in lines 10 11. Every day in many parts of the world, governments
imprison, beat, torture, and even kill Christians for their faith. To the songwriter, even if he
experiences such atrocities, he is still free. Although these horrors are uncommon here in the
United States, I believe this statement still applies to our country. Freedoms are still taken away
from people because of their beliefs in God, only on a smaller scale. For example, despite the fact
that it is illegal, many schools prohibit Christian clubs from using all the resources that are available
to other clubs in the school...all in the name of the separation of church and state allegedly found in
the Constitution.
The song deals lastly with laws when it says, You can take God out of the law/You can make me

removed from laws of our country. As with the other excerpts from the

Jim Burden is hopeful, intelligent, and with a limitless supply of potential. What makes Jim Burden
the perfect candidate is the social class and environment that surrounds him. He is not an immigrant
and he is not the richest man in town, which makes his character relatable too many readers. Jim is
just the ordinary American boy that has nothing holding him back from what his future could
provide. Cather s ability to have the perfect American Dream candidate narrate the story, while
being able to give great stories and descriptions of other characters is what makes this novel so
intriguing. It makes the story more realistic due to the fact of how Jim s interprets the American
reality for others, while seeing being able to work for his American Dream. The best description
of Jim s life can be read when Antonia says, If I live here, like you, that is different. Things will

circumstances, how different their lives are from each other s. This gives the reader a real look into

Dream versus American reality. Jim is able to do whatever he wants in life, however Antonia has

Marxism And The Communist Manifesto
The debate between how society is formed and how it should be formed has always been a point
of contention among people. When a society is formed, there is a constant struggle between the
proletariat, the working class population, and the bourgeoisie, the upper class of society with
significant capital. One of the better known ideologies is Marxism, which explains how a nation
should form itself to develop a communist society. Karl Marxillustrates his ideas of Marxism in The
Communist Manifesto. A point of controversy within the Communist Manifesto addresses how
nationalism does not help form the communist state but rather rhetorically seeks to deny the sense
of nationality. The writings of Benedict Anderson are about how the nation state manifests itself
through the spread of nationalism in his book, Imagined Communities. In Anderson s book,
nationalism helps create a community and a sense of unique identity for the population within that
community. Marxism shares a common ground with Anderson s imagined political community,
despite denying the existence of nationalism within the emergence of communist communities.
Marxism denies the emergence of nationalism when describing the collective actions of the working
class. First off, the proletariat have an imagined community, meaning that everyone in it shares a
deep comradeship with each other (Anderson 7). The Communist Manifesto states how
Communists are further reproached with desiring to abolish countries and

Example Of A Teen Activist
Definition of an activist: a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change. Teen
activists are teenagers who decided to fight for what was right, and instead of waiting for someone
to take action, they did it themselves. Teen activists do work that takes up a lot of courage, time,
and money. Teen activists don t always come in the same path, some succeeding, others failing.
Teens become activists through different experiences: having a personal struggle, they are inspired
by an animal s struggle, or they read an article somebody struggling.
To start, many teens become activists from having a personal struggle. For example, one of the
teens that became an activist after having a personal struggle was Alex Libby. Alex Libby was
getting bullied constantly after he decided he had enough. According to Katie Couric from ABC
News, Alex was having a really hard time at school. Katie asked Alex how life was like everyday
at school for him. Alex said he was punched, shoved, and mocked almost every time somebody
got the chance, but he just thought to go along with it and not tell anyone. This shows that Alex
had a personal struggle for many years of his life. Another example of Alex struggling is in the
documentary, Bully , where Alex s mom asks, Does I make you feel good to be punched? To be
shoved, stabbed, or mocked? Alex replied wearily, No. I don t know. I don t feel anything anymore.
This clearly demonstrates that Alex was having a personal struggle

Nutella Makes Up for Cocoa Shortage During World War II
The period was World War II there was a shortage of cocoa at the time; Mr. Pietro Ferrero, a
pastry maker founder of the Ferrero company thought that using hazelnuts and mixing it with skim
milk and a little of chocolate would be a good way to appease the short supply of cocoa by
allowing chocolate to last longer. This still being the product s two main ingredients today; hazelnut
and cocoa. In Italy, during the 1940s; Mr. Ferrero created the Nutellaspread. In its earliest form,
Nutella a hazel nut and chocolate spread was originally called pasta Gianduja this of course was
the Italian term, pasta means paste and the Gianduja was the name of a famous character in the
region in Italy. The paste was first introduced by being made in the loaves of bread wrapped in
tinfoil, used to make sandwiches. A product popular to children, the bread was tossed away and
the paste was most favored. Later workers decided it would be best if the spread was made easier
to spread on the bread then being known as Supercrema Gianduja , thus being processed in large
jars with a yellow sticker on the middle and a red lid. Soon after in 1964 Pasta Gianduja or
Supercrema Gianduja the product was named Nutella: nut being the origin of the product and ella a
soft Italian term.
Nutella rapidly became popular among Italy. Just 25 years ago, in 1983 the Ferrero Company
introduced the product to the United States market and it was first imported to the Northeastern

The United States 1932 Election Essay
The United States 1932 Election Many historians believe that the 1932 election was a popularity
competition, with the prize being the chief of the white house. This is because they thought that
Hoover s inability to revive the depressed economy, and his lack of a personality that reaches out
to the average American, provided Roosevelt (who was very popular) with a path to victory. I shall
discuss this view, with points in favour and points that argue Roosevelt had an appealing policy and
opinions that ensured his triumph which did not rely on Hoover s incompetence and lack of charm.
Beginning with the points in favour, it becomes easy to understand the principle behind the

Another point, which greatly affected Hoover s chances of winning, was his inconsistency in
methods. At first, he was dependant on voluntarism (charities and businesses helping at their
own will) to solve the problem of the depression. Hoover implemented the POUR organisation to
help the unemployed, but it only used donated money. The charity Red Cross, by 1931 could
only provide 75 cents a week for hungry families. The situation had developed far beyond the
ability of private charity to cope (source 3). His inconsistency is shown when he alters his
approach from opposing direct government aid and laissez fair (to leave alone), to intervention.
He personally gave up a fifth of his income. In January, congress provided $2 billion in funding a
new agency, the reconstruction finance corporation (which makes loans to large economic
organisations) and in February, Hoover signed the Glass Steagell act, which allocated £750
million of gold reserves to businesses. However, what he did was too little too late. Roosevelt s
strength was that he was quick to capitalise on the republicans failures in their approach of
voluntarism and this gave him an advantage, as the American public was willing to try something
new. Roosevelt once said in a speech for his election campaign in 1932: Whatever

Jim Steward Made History That Changed Memphis For A Lifetime
Got Soul? In 1975, Jim Steward made history that changed Memphis for a lifetime. He discovered
a small movie theater that later expanded to the biggest recording studio in the city. Quickly
Stewart realized that he had nothing. He had no funds, no equipment, or artist. But, to the rescue
comes his sister, Estelle Axton. For the simple fact that she was a bank clerk he confided in her
for help. She mortgaged her house for a while to buy better equipment for the new recording studio.
Then in an instance, the new recording studio was growing more and more each day. Satellite
Record started out as a mixture of country, gospel, and southern styles.
The different genres recorded at the recording studio is what made it widely important. After a lot
of time and effort a recording was finally made in the old movie theater that was transformed to
Satellite Records. The semi new recording studio gained status around Memphis that allowed them
a partner deal with Atlantic Records in no time. After accepting the deal, Satellite Records was
definitely put in the spot light. Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton later changed the company s
name to Stax, which was a combination of the first letters in their last names.
Stax Records wanted to give everyone in the city changes to prove their musical abilities, so they
developed an open door policy that soon attracted a mixture African American and Caucasian R B

Taking a Look at India s Geography
Did you know that India is the second most populated country in the world with over 1.2 billion
people? This heavily populated country s history and culture was, and still is, affected by its
geography. For example, The Ganges River provided some irrigation, but was mostly known for its
religious significance in the Hindu faith. The Indus Riverprovided fertile land for the Indus Valley
civilization and allowed agriculture to flourish, but also flooded, which was part of the
civilization s economical weakening. Another factor that which brought the fall of the
civilization was the Hindu Kush Mountain Range; although it provided some protection, paths
were discovered by invaders that permitted them to cross over and quell. The Ganges River, a
wide and slow paced river, starting from the mountain tops, then through the Gangetic Plain, and
finally empties into the Bay of Bengal ( Ganges River ). The fertile Gangetic Plain was where
settlements and developing cities during prehistoric times because it was stable agriculturally (
Geography ). Despite the fact that the Ganges brought great fertility, it is also known as the most
holy and sacramental river in the Hindu religion. The river is personified as a goddess, Ganga,
who was sent from heaven to purify cursed and sinful souls; she was caught in the snowy
Himalayan peaks of Shiva s hair , then escapes by flowing down the mountain into the sea and
finally purified more than 60,000 souls (Watts). Due to this myth, people

Fantasy Sports Should Not Be Considered Gambling
Fantasy Sports; gambling or not. Fantasy sports should not be considered gambling. Fantasy
sports requires the player to be knowledgeable about the sport that they are playing in. Gambling
requires no skill whatsoever. Any given day, the greatest poker playing in the world could be
beaten by someone who just read the rulebook. In fantasy sports, the more knowledgeable and
experienced player will have a better chance of winning in the end. Luck is a huge factor in
gambling, not so in fantasy sports. By definition gambling is risky, full of hunches and gut feelings.
gambling on something usually doesn t turn out the way the better hoped it would. With fantasy
sports the luck is minimized. Finally, Money is always involved with true gambling. Fantasy sports
are often recreational. Friends at work or at school will often start these leagues to have fun.
Players with more experience are more likely to win in fantasy sports. With gambling the same
cannot be said. Gambling has no real skill involved. If a person bets on a horse race, they do so
with blind faith in that horse. Sure, you can watch that horse and figure out if it can do well or
not. At the end of the day, none of that will matter. In fantasy sports players need experience to
win. Yes, a player can win in their first game. However the more experienced player will always

included asphyxiation, thermal injuries, and trauma. Four indirect death were caused by a crop
duster hitting power lines during the ashfall, a traffic accident during poor visibility, and two
heart attacks from shoveling ash. The Toutle River was flooded by melting snow and ice from

bridges were destroyed, 200 homes were destroyed or damaged, debris dams were added to help
control sediment in the rivers. Thirty logging trucks, 22 transport vehicles, and 39 rail cars were

Neuroticism, Conscientiousness And Conflict Style
Abstract The aim of this study is to examine neuroticism, conscientiousness and conflict style in
association to workplace bullying victimization. 132 Malaysian working adults from various
organizations will be recruited for this study using purposive sampling. Participants were asked to
fill up the personality shortened Big Five Personality questionnaire to measure (neuroticism,
conscientiousness) and conflict style questionnaire (a higher score would indicate more dominant
conflict styles) , followed by the Negative Acts Questionnaire Revised (a higher average score
represents more frequent and intense workplace bullyingvictimization). Multiple regressions
analysis will be used to test the correlation between the predictor and criterion variables. The
researcher hypothesizes that neuroticism, conscientiousness and conflict style will be significant
predictors of workplace bullying victimization. Neuroticism, Conscientiousness and Conflict Style
on Workplace Bullying Victimization in the Malaysian Working Population Workplace bullying
has been identified as a crucial work problem in the work environment because it causes more
stress than all other kinds of work related stress put together (Einarsen, Hoel, Zapf, Cooper, 2011).

Why Did The Soviet Union Collapse
The Soviet Union was one of the super powers, that is why, in my opinion, is highly useful try to
understand why it collapsed. The USSR was famous for the progressive scientific investigation that
it, unfortunately, approached on space and weaponry technology.
So, why did the USSR collapse? I witnessed this event, and I think there were two major
components, or reasons, that caused this colossal break down, changing all political structure and
leading to several economic issues. The USA convinced Saudi Arabia to lower oil prices, thous, the
Soviet Union cannot benefit from its very own oil. This move leaded to the deficiency of the hard
currency reserves of the USSR.
In 1985, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced the Glasnost and Perestroika. These economic
policies aimed for a much needed improvement. The Glasnost eventually led to greater freedom of
information. More importantly, it opened up the minds of the public about the mistakes and
limitations of the government. Aside from a bad economy, some of satellite states in the eastern
part of Europe started to abandon the ideals of communism. These factors pressured Gorbachev to
put an end to the Cold War. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Compromise of 1850 Essay
The compromise of 1850 was a settlement on a series of issues plaguing the unity of the states.
The primary issue to address was the institution of slavery, which was causing much dissension
between the north and the south. Additional items to be addressed were territory issues and to
prevent secession by the south. Henry Clay stepped forward to present a compromise, which had
Congress in an eight month discussion known as the Great Debate . As a result of the proposal,
there were strong oppositions. One outspoken person who opposed the proposal was John C
Calhoun. Calhoun was an intellectual southern politician, political philosopher and a proponent to

Webster believed the issue of slavery was settled long ago, when the regions were divided into
slave and free states, and he also believed an agreement could be reached between the pro slavery
positions in the south and anti slavery position in the north. Comparatively, Calhoun and Webster
both saw the union was in danger of falling apart, they also both believed the issues of slavery
between the north and the south was the major cause. Where they disagreed was on the future
state of slavery. Calhoun saw the compromise as a betrayal of the south; he sought to have the
northerners agree to the protection of slavery in the south so the south would remain in the union.
Calhoun knew slavery pre existed and believed it must continue to exist. Webster was more of a
pacifist, he pleaded with the northerners to accept demands of the south in order to save the
union, even though he did not accept the fact slavery needed to continue. Webster deeply believed
that preservation of the union was more important than any other issue. In addition, William
Henry Seward also opposed the proposed compromise. Seward was a New York politician and

became one of the most outspoken anti slavery politicians of the period. Seward condemned Clay s

The origin of the genus Homo is widely debated, with several candidate ancestors being proposed
in the genus Australopithecu. I believe that Au. garhi gave rise to the genus homo. I believe this
to be true because even though it is believed that the Au. afarensis was most likely ancestor of the
genus homo, the ancesteral descendent linkage between the two taxa was difficult to identify,
owing the virtual lack of a hominid fossil record in the East African dating to 3 2 mya, the timing

What Is An Example Of Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Cognitive Dissonance Theory, or CDT for short, is an objective communication theory that was
developed by Leon Festinger. Cognitive Dissonance is defined as The distressing mental state
caused by inconsistency between a person s two beliefs or a belief and an action. (Griffin,
Ledbetter, et al). An example of cognitive dissonance would be a health conscious smoker, this
person knows that smokingis bad for them, but they still smoke because they enjoy it. Their desire
to be healthy conflicts with their smoking, this conflict places them in a distressing mental state, a
state of cognitive dissonance. Festinger provides three hypotheses for CDT: 1.) Selective exposure
prevents dissonance. 2.) Post decision dissonance creates need for reassurance. and 3.) Minimal
justification for action induces attitude change.

The Importance Of Public Spaces
Have you ever wondered why people are drawn to certain public spaces but not others? What
makes those public spaces more attractive to people? Some public spaces are packed full of
people while others remain barren and unused. Furthermore, particular soft edges are highly
used as public spaces while other soft edges are simply used as entrances to buildings and not
utilized as public spaces. On Milwaukee School of Engineering s campus, there are numerous
outdoor public spaces and soft edges. Jan Gehl (2011) examines public spaces in her book Life
between buildings: Using public space. She inspects different public spaces and soft edges, and
determines what makes various public spaces highly used and others vacant and desolate. Soft
edges need ample room for walkingand wandering, along with sitting areas for people to socialize
and communicate with one another. Soft edges are defined as the immediate space surrounding the
outside entrance of a building. It can be as simple as extra space off to the side of a sidewalkfor
entering and exiting a building, to an elaborate space that includes benches and tables for people
to socialize and enjoy themselves. Gehl (2011) explains that people need space for basic activities
such as walking, standing, and sitting, as well as seeing, hearing, and talking (p. 131). Those spaces
are often located in soft edges, because people frequently travel throughout soft edges and they do

The Big Stick s Achievements
Matthew Del Rosso Honors US History (2) 08 March 2016 The Big Stick s Achievements
During presidency, the president is known to carry many duties under their belt. Some go wrong,
while the majority has turn into major historical accomplishments. Some of the accomplishments
have affected the country for many years and on. As many presidents have achieved their duties
beyond expectation, Teddy Roosevelt was one of the outstanding presidents who have done so.
Teddy has a long list of his accomplishments, but there are five that have sent him above all.
Teddy Roosevelt was always fascinated with nature. His first important achievement was the
beginning of the National Park System. He was very set upon keeping the Earth clean. Roosevelt
saw how Americans were inadvertently killing the Earth with pollution, so he got together with
preservationists and solved the problem. The first feeble step toward conservation had been taken
with the Desert Land Act of 1877, under which the federal government sold arid land cheaply on
the condition that the purchaser irrigate the thirsty soil within three years. This was important in
the overall project because it got the ball rolling and opened many Americans eyes to the growing
issue of pollution. However, More successful was the Forest Reserve Act of 1891, authorizing the
president to set aside public forests as national parks and other reserves. Under this statute some 46
million acres of magnificent trees were rescued

A delicate and cultured lady as Hagar is, she feels ashamed of her husband s ruffian behavior and

tolerate the husband in order to have a good marital life with him. After the wedding, Hagar
becomes determined to change the way her husband behaves. His manner are rude and
unexpected. This only embarrasses her. Later on in the novel. Hagar realizes that she herself is
he embarrassing one, having humiliated people like her son, John or her daughter in law, Doris.
The references dealing with cultivated flowers are grim. They have the smell of a funeral parlor
and speak of death and emptiness, almost like Hagar s aging Life. In her old... Show more content

it is too late. Although she finally makes peace with Marvin, telling him in one of the important
quotes, You ve been good to me, always. A better son than john (304). This does not makes up
for year of emotional neglect, Even though the reader might want to see this reconciliation as
part of a coming happy ending it is far too little too late. Furthermore although she realizes, Every
joy I might have held in my man or any child of mine or even the plain light of morning. All were

free and to discover her true self. Near her death, Hagar has little to take back on with pride. Her
life had been ruled by superficial elements, so her biggest concerns were towards appearances
and manners. She lived a life of constant chaos because of her arrogance and her endless worry of
everybody s opinion. Even in her pride won t allow herself to accept any help from her daughter
in Law or even the nurse at the hospital? So could say that Hagar led a life of stubborn pride.
After she realizes the irony that a woman of her qualities had become a maid, Hagar feels trapped.
This shows that Hagar is imprisoned of her own emotions and her

Dante s Moral Beliefs Of Christianity And Islam
Dante s christian version of hell reflects his upbringing; it also reflects his life as a man caught
between shackles of the Middle Ages and the liberation of the Renaissance. In Islam sins are
similar, in both Christianity and Islam believe in similar concepts such as Jesus, but Jesus story has
different details between both religions and Christianitys sins and Islamhas a vastly different moral
compass.
.
Christianity and Islam have vastly different morals, but one is blasphemy against God. In Islam,
the Five Pillars of Islam set the framework of the model Muslim life. The first pillar in Islam is
Shahada, the Muslim profession of faith, which expresses the two simple and fundamental beliefs
that make one a Muslim: La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah.
This means that there is no god but God and Muhammad is the messenger of God. The worst sin
in Islam is to associate God with partners or a son because it portrays God as human like or not
one of a kind because in Islam there is only one God and nothing is like him. In the Bible, it s
written in Matthew 12:31 32: And I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but
the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son
of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven,
either in this age or in the age to come. In Christianity, blasphemy against Jesus is not considered a
one time offense; rather, it is a stubborn way of

The Habitable Zone outside Earth Essay
The Habitable Zone
There are approximately seven billion people living on the Earth right now. Who can picture 1
million people, let alone 7 billion people? Yet the total incomprehension of it does not make the
fact any less true. Nobody has ever seen an alien or an organism that has not originated from Earth,
yet it does not make the prospect any less valid. Most citizens of Earth cannot imagine living
anywhere else but on this blue planet, but that should not make the possibility of it any less real.
Space, like the future, is always ahead of us, and no one can predict what it has in store for us or
what ideas will be found. Outside of the Earth, life in the universe is not such an inane thought as
was once believed. Firstly, there are a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The luminosity of the star plays a role on the length of the HZ as well. The more light a stars
radiates, the larger that star s HZ will be (Palmer). More light brings along more heat. As well as
luminosity, another variable is time. As times ticks by, a star s luminosity increases, and as it
increases the margins of the zone will expand. This indicates that, with time, planets within a HZ
could change (Lissauer). Then there is the Greenhouse Effect, a planet with a plentiful hydrogen
atmosphere might be able to extend its HZ. The Greenhouse gas would be able to absorb heat and
extend the HZ up to fifteen astronomical units (AU). One AU is defined as the distance between
the earth and the sun (Baalke). Though the range extended would depend on the type of host star.
For instance, G type stars, like the Sun would have larger HZ. In contrast, M type stars emit less
light and would have a smaller HZ (Redd Greenhouse Effect ).
Similarly, Earth also has variables that affects life. One would be the mentioned greenhouse effect.
This effect talks about greenhouse gases, with some examples being H2O vapor, CO2, methane,
ozone, and nitrous oxide ( Greenhouse Effect ). These gases, located as molecules in the Earth s
atmosphere, absorb mirrored heat from the sun during the day. If these gases were not there, then
the temperature after nightfall would

The Importance Of The Bombing Of Cologne
Bombings of Cologne and Dresden
The bombings that took place in the 1940 s caused grave destruction for not only families but
significant amounts of Cologne and Dresden themselves. Each bombing had reasonings and that
resulted in drastic effects for Germany.
Before Cologne was bombed it had much significance in the eyes of the people that made a
living in the city and had lived there their whole life. Back in the Battle of Bulge the Germans
were forced out of France and in turn they used up all their reserves. Although the British and the
Americans were closing in on the Rhine River, the Germans were not about to let them take yet
another piece of land from them. This was how the city of Cologne came to be, Cologne stretched

Violet Baudelaire is fourteen and in what Piaget would call the formal operational stage meaning
she thinks abstractly and has gained mature moral reasoning. She most definitely excels at abstract
thinking, as Violet creates many useful inventions throughout the book and has no problem getting
past functional fixedness. In order to attempt to save Sunny she creates the grappling hook, which
would have inevitably worked if she didn t get caught by a henchman. Klaus Baudelaire is twelve
years of age and, like his older sister, is also in the formal operational stage. He acts much older
than his age, as he has good morals and abstract thinking. Klaus is the one who realizes that if
Violet participates in Count Olaf s play, then she will be legally wed to him. As well as thinking,
he has gained morals and fights along side Violet to counteract Count Olaf and his unjust rules and
horrible acts he commits towards the children, especially the youngest Sunny. Sunny is only listed
as in infant in the book, but she is clearly in the sensorimotor stage. Her world consists of
experiences via her senses and actions. One of her main characteristics that was brought up in the
book was how much she enjoys biting things and people. This places her in the oral psychosexual
stage, meaning she gains pleasure through biting things, like most little kids do. She doesn t show
many signs of previous attachment to her parents considering it

Cooper Union Conflict
When Abraham Lincoln gave his Cooper Union Address it is doubtful that he knew its impact on
the country and ultimately the future of the Union. In his Cooper Union Address, future president
Abraham Lincoln thoroughly rebuked the southern Democrats Stephen A. Douglas statements
about the Republicans slavery stance by using not only the oppositions wording against them, he
supported his arguments with true examples sited from the signatories of the Constitution and their
past voting record, from information gleaned during his career as a lawyer, and from his sense of
honor and ethics. Abraham Lincolnand the Republican Partyhad some very strong constituents,
mainly those with very strong Free Soil tendencies. For this reason along with personal beliefs on
Lincoln s part the Republicans, led by Lincoln in the presidential election, were strongly against the
expansion of slavery into the territories
By using past precedents Lincoln gave some serious weight to his arguments on the nature of the
Republican s stance on slavery and the federal government s rights to limit slavery in the Territories.
Since the opposing party s argument was that the framers knew more about the issue of slavery and
its expansion than they did now. Lincoln turned this argument for the use of the Republicans by
explaining the voting records of the majority of the men who signed the Constitution. When the
question of slavery in the Northwest Territory became an issue Lincoln sites the fact that of

The Radical Enlightenment Hated Everything That Was Religion
REL 2011 Midterm Essay
QUESTION 2 The radical Enlightenment hated everything that was religion. This was a time where
scientific naturalism was being applied to every field of inquiry and everything, including religion,
was under scrutiny. The philosophers during the Enlightenment each had their reasons for their
hostile view of religion. The distaste for religion began when Reimarus wrote , which was
published for the first time in 1972 and had 1400 pages of content. His book labeled the second
coming of Christ a farce, he believed that the disciples stole the body of Christ and fabricated the
resurrection. Reimarus accused the disciples of using the idea of Christ coming back as a way to
maintain a sense of power. He went as far as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kant s stance leaned more towards understanding morality. He stated that you cannot go to religion
for morality, due to it being the death of morality itself. Moreover, Kant sheds light on the
imperfections of the Bible. He viewed the God of the Bible in a different perspective, calling him an
arbitrary tyrant. A god that commands his followers to kill, to sacrifice, and one that damns people
to hellfire. These statements by Kant led people to think that religion altogether must be eliminated
and people should focus more on reason rather than revelation. Schleiermacher and Hagel had a
different view of the radical Enlightenment and points made during it. Schleiermacher believed that
Kant is undermining reason. He believes Kant is wrong because in his view religion is ethics and
the enlightenment has the wrong idea by trying to throw our religion. He understands the concept
of god has to be interpreted if we want to keep it. Schleiermacher wants to keep religion, not let it
go the way the Enlightenment wants to, he wants to keep Christianity and wants us to rethink
Christianity. Hagel as well wants to be the savior of Christianity, he wants to rescue to the content.
He sees the Enlightenment as a necessary step in the development of god. Because we are a
manifestation of the absolute, that s what the kingdom of god means, this world and this process, it
is the unfolding of the will of god and we are the agents of that process.

Analysis Of The Art Of War By Sun Tzu
Book Analysis: The Art of War by Sun Tzu Ancient Chinese scholar Sun Tzu wrote The Art of
War more than 2000 years earlier, probably for kings, generals and solders of his time. However,
this book is still relevant in this high tech modern world. It has still a powerful energy to work as a
useful guidance for modern times. The Art of Waris actually about struggles and confrontation we
all go through in our daily lives. We as all face same kinds of dilemmas in our hearts and minds
when it comes to compete with real life challenges. Though the book was compiled as a military
advice in ancient times, it has potential to function as practical guide in all facets of life even
today. This book is guide for victory in life, but it is also about the art of war. At the same time, it
is all about self awareness. It says know the enemy and know yourself; in in hundred battles you
will never be in peril . This is how Sun Tzuemphasises the importance of knowing about yourself.
To be able to be a winner in the challenges of life it is important to know your strengths and
weakness. If you are know yourself very well you should not worry about anything. Sun Tzu has
made it very clear that half battle is won when you have a better understanding of yourself.
However, if you neither know about yourself nor about your enemy, it means you are at a very
high risk every time you enter a competition. Therefore, to be successful in life, one must be aware
about both himself and the opposing

France, China
Intertwined with France s continual change to government and Republics is their culture of
desiring a hero. After the French revolution, Napoleon was voted in as the emperor of France.
Napoleon was a war hero after the French revolution and the citizens of France believed he could
be the savior that Franceneeded. Because of the hero worship culture in France, Napoleon was
given dictatorial powers. Additionally, the French citizens showed the yearning for a savior after
World War Two when General Charles de Gaulle
became head of the government. In 1958 the
French generals demanded that de Gaulle be named head of the government, and if not they would

China has had twelve different constitutions since 1911. The most recent constitution came to be in
1982, and in theory it gives a serious amount of power to the National People s Congress (NPC).
The NPC is a group that is elected by the provincial people s assemblies who are in turn elected
by lowering ranking officials. The constitution states that the NPC is the highest Organ of state
power . The constitution also gives the NPC the power to amend the constitution; supervise its
enforcement; enact and amend laws; ratify and abrogate treaties; approve the state budget and
plans for national economic and social development; elect and impeach top officials of the state
and judiciary; and supervise the work of the State Council, the State Central Military
Commission, the Supreme People s Court, and the Supreme People s Procuratorate . However,
in reality the NPC serves mostly as a rubber stamp for Party decisions. One example of this is the
NPC s right to elect party officials such as the President and Vice President. Technically the NPC
has these rights, it is the CPC that actually appoints these positions and the NPC just simply
agrees with the Party s decisions. A driving reason that the NPC has so much theoretical power,
yet does not have any power in reality is that many NPC deputies are members of the CPC or are
state officials or civil servants. China rejects the principle of separation of power, and this allows
for NPC deputies to hold positions in these other branches of government. The NPC is designed to
oversee the other branches of government that they are usually in, therefore, many members of the
NPC are overseeing themselves. According to a leading Chinese media organization, 85% of the
three thousand NPC members hold positions in other branches of the government. That number
clearly shows why the NPC does not use any of their power, because they are overseeing

In Paulo Coehlo s The Alchemist, the alchemist is asked, Why are you an alchemist? His
response is simply, I m an alchemist because I m an alchemist. It is as straightforward as that. I
am a theatre artist. There is not a cute story about how I saw a show when I was younger and
was inspired; it is simply who I am to the core of my being. I am fortunate that my time in theatre
has brought me to places like Cincinnati Music Hall s stage, the mainstage at Playhouse in the

being name dropped. However, the theatre that I have done that has most shaped my worldview

Torture Is Always Wrong Analysis
The author, Melissa Mae, explains the issue, along with the opposing sides, clearly. Mae begins the
essay by introducing the issue. She says the abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib gained attention
around 2004. Americans became concerned when they found out the government was using torture
and were extremely upset about it. She states that people believed torture was being used as a part
of the government s interrogation of war on terror detainees. Though she tells the readers what the
issue is, she never fully explains it. She only tells us that the essays she wrote about were written
around the time the debate was heating up. A positive trait about this essayis that she stated the issue
in the first paragraph.
Not only does Mae give examples from both sides, but she also includes many quotes that keep the
reader interested. She writes, Whereas Bagaric and Clarke think saving lives justifies torture,
however, Johnson believes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that torture is always wrong are misguided. This helps the reader understand both sides of the
argument equally. The writer gives an interesting aspect to the essay. She makes her point clear to
the audience, which makes the essay readable. In the essay, Mae adds fascinating details to keep
the reader interested. When the essay begins to get uninteresting, she adds a detail that makes you

Bob, also known as Mr. Incredible, and Helen, also known as Elastigirl, have tried to keep the families super hero abilities under wraps since starting a family and after an incident involving Bob that led to the banning of all super heroes. Bob s reminiscing of his old life as a super hero leads to him becoming once again involved in super hero activities as a way to escape from his mundane job and life and find the thrill of a life of adventure that he once had. Helen soon becomes suspicious of the changes she sees in Bob and begins to investigate. Once she finds out what is truly going on Bob has already found himself in some danger with the antagonist, Syndrome, and she comes to the rescue. • 3. Why Is Apollo 13 Wrong Apollo 13 was first scheduled for March 1970 but eventually was shifted for April that year. Some spectators believe it was because one of the oxygen tank in the service module encountering a problem during testing, and it should not have been ignored. Only the third intended mission to the moon and it wouldn t quite make it. On April 13, 1970 two days after Apollo 13lifted off something went wrong. The three men, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise trained as any other astronaut would, but what happened was unpredictable. The three men had just finished a broadcast to the citizens back home without many people joined watching. It was 56 hours into the mission where a cryo stir had occurred this caused Oxygen tank 2 in the service module... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They could see the symptoms easily enough lack of power, lack of oxygen but had no clue about the underlying disease that had befallen their ship (Bizony). Unfortunately the men only had a small triangular window to look out onto the ship. When one of the astronauts finally saw a large clue Lovell called in that he had seen a gas blowing into space. The substance coming out happened to be from the cryogenic tank explosion, but how did it happen? Not long after the Apollo 13 accident, they put months of investigation in and just happened to find out where the mistake was made. Back in 1968while the oxygen tanks were being manufactured one of them happened to be dropped, but the tank still passed it s quality checks and was sent out. Meanwhile, three weeks before Apollo 13 there was a test run on the cryogenic tanks and how they can carry their load. Every tank gets pre flight testing but when this particular tank was tested it seemed to show it had a damaged fill line. Meaning it would not empty the contents as desired. When the tank was getting pre flight tests the tanks were emptied by forcing oxygen gas into the tank and the liquid oxygen was forced out, but while in space the tanks did not need to be emptied. Heaters were located in the tank in order to heat the inside of it to keep the oxygen flowing and this would only be used for short periods of time. The plan was to use these heaters to essentially boil off any excess oxygen, this would then need 8 hour of 65 volt DC power. The thermostatically controlled switches on the heater were only made for 28 volt DC power so this led people to believe they were damaged from that mistake. This would then cause the switches to weld shut meaning the temperature would rise over 1000 degrees F inside the tank. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Fadia Faqir’s Pillars of Salt Essay Fadia Faqir s Pillars of Salt The fictional accounts of women s experiences in Fadia Faqir s, Pillars of Salt, illustrate issues articulated by women s rights activists in the Middle East. Traditional roles of women and men and a mythology of femininity and masculinity are juxtaposed with the disparate realities of the characters. The damaging forces of colonial rule, war, and Westernization are also exposed. I focused particularly on Pillars of Salt, because it contains very sophisticated juxtapositions of women s reality and mythological accounts of women. It also demonstrates that issues of gender roles are much more complicated than a hierarchy of cruel, powerful men, bent on tradition who maintain the system and progressive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, women are often seen as a symbol of cultural preservation and a measure of family honor. In conditions of war and colonial rule, which represents an attack on men s honor and dignity, attention to women s roles as prescribed by cultural tradition is often intensified. However, the unusual conditions of war and resistance to colonial rule also may provide openings for women to reconfigure their roles and rights, based on new needs of society. People are fed dreams, stuffed with dreams the way I used to stuff the hens with grain. Suddenly you discover that what you have been eating all these years is dust and what you have been drinking is just thin air. (p. 223) In this section of the paper I would like to examine character s relation to and the ways in which they internalize the mythology of their culture. The book displays many elements of mythology which are quite removed from actual experience and yet become a part of characters identity and gain a certain power in their minds. The storyteller s narrations are an obvious example of a sort of mythology. He voices a stream of rumors of the village garnished with religious invocations which lend his tales legitimacy. The love songs (as well as the cinema), which play a particularly key role in Um Saad s narratives, are another imaginary depiction of a woman s experience, which guide Um Saad to beliefs of what she may expect from life and love. • 5. Analysis Of Educating Rita Educating Rita: A Realistic Film From the Director s Perspective Educating Rita is a realistic look at a woman s journey to change and find herself. The director keeps the film simple while watching her overcome a lack of confidence and other obstacles. The film is considered a comedy but is still a relatable story because the director represented Rita s character as she really would be(dictionary.com). Rita, real name Susan, is a young married hairdresser that wants to get an education. Frank is an alcoholic literature teacher who is assigned to help her through the program she enrolled in. Both have rocky relationships and the audience could easily assume they end up falling for each other(Maslin). Rita has a thirst for knowledge but little understanding of what she is quoting. Rita makes new friends and tries new things. She even marvels at how much she liked seeing Macbeth(Maslin). By the end of the movie she gains an understanding of her education and passes her test with distinction. Through this series of events both characters end up single, yet part in the same manor that they met(Maslin). Lewis Gilbert, the director of the film, had the responsibility of using all the elements of film to interpret the writers ideas(dictionary.com). In Educationg Rita he uses realistic lighting and very little mood music to indicate how the viewer should feel during the scene. Another way a director can get a viewer to feel a certain way or to focus on a particular conversation, is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Analysis Of George Orwell s 1984-Personal Narrative The Kingdom of Sienna was beautiful place. The bustling streets were filled with shops, eateries, and beautiful parks for the citizens and sightseers. In the center of it all was the castle. The huge castle would put any mansion to shame; the courtyards and numerous towers made it captivating to any passerby. Unfortunately this is not where our story begins. We must first venture out of the city to the nearby rural outskirts of Sienna. Not many people live here, which is quite a shame. Beautiful flora and fauna cover this area; it all serves as inspiration for poor old Winston. Winston was once a drifter who settled here. With no familyor friends, he spends his time writing poetry about nature, but the solitude doesn t bother him. One pleasant evening Winston, deep in his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The king took the poems and immediately recognized the true poet. He summoned his guards and they took Isaac to the dungeon. Dear Winston, I am so thankful for your poems. I would like to invite to come stay at my grand castle and write poems for me. said the king happily, but Winston politely declined his offer. Your highness, unfortunately I mustn t go to the castle. These forests are my home and without their inspiration I can t write. Well then, I have an idea that will benefit us both. stated the king. • 7. Current Management Techniques, And Make Recommendations On... The purpose of this memo is to survey our current management techniques, and make recommendations on where we can improve our current model. The real estate industry is a cyclical market. We can observe almost regular 18 year cycles in the housing market, with the last recession occurring in 2008 (Nikolais, 2014). With this regularity, it has been very easy to predict when expansions will occur, which in turn allows real estatefirms to position themselves in a way to fully capture the market. However, the last bust in 2008 has been much different. For the first time in history, people are electing to rent, rather than buy their home. This can be seen in a recent survey by MarketWatch: Nearly six in 10 Millennials (59%) say they d rather rent a home than buy one, with just one in four saying they are either very or completely likely to purchase a home in the next five years (MarketWatch, 2015). The reason for this change in behavior is that first time homebuyers are burdened with nearly $1 Trillion in student loan debt (Kingkade, 2013). This pressure has made younger people wary of taking on even more debt in the form of a mortgage loan. On a broader level, we are six years into a recovery in the housing market that is likely to last for a considerable amount of time (Nikolais, 2014). Although we are seeing a rise in demand, and have been very busy as of late, there are always areas in which we can improve. Recent trends in technology have reshaped the way businesses are ... Further in 1990, studies showed that US cars increased six times faster than human population. • 9. Examples Of Id, Ego, And Superego In Mary Shelley s... According to modern psychologists, Sigmund Freud is considered the father of modern psychology; Freud s idea of the three zones of the psychic apparatus play a heavy influence in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. The three zones are Id, Ego, and Superego. The Id is natural instincts, Ego is the influence of the Id caused by society, and the Superego is acting based off of adopted morals taught to you. The Monster s personality traits in Frankenstein are examples of Freud s idea of Id, Ego, and Superego. Throughout the novel, each trait is developed with the Id being first ; and alternating back and forth between all of them on which one becomes the dominant trait. When the Monster is first created, he acts on natural instincts to keep himself alive. The Monster must figure out life on his own because he does not have a parental figure to teach him right from wrong. The Id instincts take over the Monster s actions I ate some berries...I slaked my thirst at the brook (Shelley 87). • 11. Life In A Tide Pool Research Paper Ocean water is always moving, and gravity from the sun and the moon pulling on the waters of the ocean causes what s called tides. Each day there are two high tides, when the water moves higher onto the beach, and two low tides, when the water moves further away from the beach back out toward the main body of water. A tidepool is a pool of water left behind by the ocean tides. Oysters, seabirds, blue crabs, and cordgrass can all live in a tidepool. Let s explore the tidepool habitat. When high tides come up onto the beach, the water brings animals and plants with it. Tide pools are formed when low tide takes the water back out toward the sea, and some water gets trapped and left behind. Things like rocks and low spots, like shallow holes, can keep the water from leaving the beach area. Plants and animals can make a tidepool their home, or habitat. A habitat is the environment in which plants and animals live. Plants and animals in a tidepool habitat live in an aquatic habitat, or water environment. Life in a tide pool is not easy. Although high tide brings into the tide pool more fresh seawater, animals, and plants, the waves are very powerful. Also, once low tide happens again, the tide pool begins ... Thus, culture has the ability to influence the way in which one learns, lives, and behaves. When the cultural values and practices are negative, the fate of a person growing up in this situation can be critically affected. In The Sand Child, Tahar Ben Jelloun exhibits how the cultural values of the Moroccan society such as the inheritance law and the social practices such as the blatant rejection and demeaning treatment of women in society have affected Ahmed, the protagonist, and provide an insight into Jelloun s critique of those practices. Ahmed s father comes to him in a dream and tells him that he did not have the courage to proceed with this practice himself, but admires the fathers that were able to follow through with it. He specifically mentions how Ahmed was saved from this torturous procedure, as his father chose him to take on the male lead, while on the other hand his sisters were ignored and were figuratively dead to the father. Although, this cultural practice did not directly affect Ahmed, nor did it affect his sisters, it affected other female babies in this society, while also subconsciously affecting Ahmed. This sense of betrayal and guilt has affected Ahmed s life as it is something that will always follow him because he feels as though he betrayed his father by not following through with his wishes and becoming the man he had always wished for. The author may have put this section in because he wanted to demonstrate the guilt that is subconsciously put onto women. All aspects of a woman s life are criticized merely for having female body parts and being seen as the weaker gender. Review Of Pieces Mended By Film, And Digital Art Title: Pieces Mended Modality: Movement, Drama, Film, and Digital Art Materials: Samsung Galaxy Edge, HP stream, Filmora editing software, and music by The Used. Flashback: The year was 2002, I was standing on the corner waiting for the van to take me to therapy. The outfit that day was likely a black hoodie, studded belt, family guy t shirt, skinny jeans, and checkered vans. The music blasted through foam covered Sony headphones that looped behind my neck. The song Pieces Mended by The Used (2002) played on a beat up disc man, which was decorated in yellow caution tape, duct tape, and sharpie marker. Three minutes passed felt more like a decade. I remember thinking that the entire situation was bullshit and no medication, or amount of therapy was going to help me. The only ingredients that would ensure a smooth day were whiskey, a wine flavored dutch, and my bed. The song lyrics supported my decision to ditch therapy that day, because honestly, what did they know about anything. The lyric, fuck it, I m fine became my motto for the next few years (The Used, 2002). • 19. Marxism And The Communist Manifesto The debate between how society is formed and how it should be formed has always been a point of contention among people. When a society is formed, there is a constant struggle between the proletariat, the working class population, and the bourgeoisie, the upper class of society with significant capital. One of the better known ideologies is Marxism, which explains how a nation should form itself to develop a communist society. Karl Marxillustrates his ideas of Marxism in The Communist Manifesto. A point of controversy within the Communist Manifesto addresses how nationalism does not help form the communist state but rather rhetorically seeks to deny the sense of nationality. The writings of Benedict Anderson are about how the nation state manifests itself through the spread of nationalism in his book, Imagined Communities. In Anderson s book, nationalism helps create a community and a sense of unique identity for the population within that community. Marxism shares a common ground with Anderson s imagined political community, despite denying the existence of nationalism within the emergence of communist communities. Marxism denies the emergence of nationalism when describing the collective actions of the working class. First off, the proletariat have an imagined community, meaning that everyone in it shares a deep comradeship with each other (Anderson 7). Teens become activists through different experiences: having a personal struggle, they are inspired by an animal s struggle, or they read an article somebody struggling. To start, many teens become activists from having a personal struggle. For example, one of the teens that became an activist after having a personal struggle was Alex Libby. Alex Libby was getting bullied constantly after he decided he had enough. According to Katie Couric from ABC News, Alex was having a really hard time at school. Katie asked Alex how life was like everyday at school for him. Alex said he was punched, shoved, and mocked almost every time somebody got the chance, but he just thought to go along with it and not tell anyone. This shows that Alex had a personal struggle for many years of his life. Another example of Alex struggling is in the documentary, Bully , where Alex s mom asks, Does I make you feel good to be punched? To be shoved, stabbed, or mocked? Another point, which greatly affected Hoover s chances of winning, was his inconsistency in methods. At first, he was dependant on voluntarism (charities and businesses helping at their own will) to solve the problem of the depression. Hoover implemented the POUR organisation to help the unemployed, but it only used donated money. The charity Red Cross, by 1931 could only provide 75 cents a week for hungry families. The situation had developed far beyond the ability of private charity to cope (source 3). His inconsistency is shown when he alters his approach from opposing direct government aid and laissez fair (to leave alone), to intervention. He personally gave up a fifth of his income. In January, congress provided $2 billion in funding a new agency, the reconstruction finance corporation (which makes loans to large economic organisations) and in February, Hoover signed the Glass Steagell act, which allocated £750 million of gold reserves to businesses. However, what he did was too little too late. Roosevelt s strength was that he was quick to capitalise on the republicans failures in their approach of voluntarism and this gave him an advantage, as the American public was willing to try something new. Comparatively, Calhoun and Webster both saw the union was in danger of falling apart, they also both believed the issues of slavery between the north and the south was the major cause. Where they disagreed was on the future state of slavery. Calhoun saw the compromise as a betrayal of the south; he sought to have the northerners agree to the protection of slavery in the south so the south would remain in the union. Calhoun knew slavery pre existed and believed it must continue to exist. Webster was more of a pacifist, he pleaded with the northerners to accept demands of the south in order to save the union, even though he did not accept the fact slavery needed to continue. Some public spaces are packed full of people while others remain barren and unused. Furthermore, particular soft edges are highly used as public spaces while other soft edges are simply used as entrances to buildings and not utilized as public spaces. On Milwaukee School of Engineering s campus, there are numerous outdoor public spaces and soft edges. Jan Gehl (2011) examines public spaces in her book Life between buildings: Using public space. She inspects different public spaces and soft edges, and determines what makes various public spaces highly used and others vacant and desolate. Soft edges need ample room for walkingand wandering, along with sitting areas for people to socialize and communicate with one another. Soft edges are defined as the immediate space surrounding the outside entrance of a building. It can be as simple as extra space off to the side of a sidewalkfor entering and exiting a building, to an elaborate space that includes benches and tables for people to socialize and enjoy themselves. Gehl (2011) explains that people need space for basic activities such as walking, standing, and sitting, as well as seeing, hearing, and talking (p. 131). His first important achievement was the beginning of the National Park System. He was very set upon keeping the Earth clean. Roosevelt saw how Americans were inadvertently killing the Earth with pollution, so he got together with preservationists and solved the problem. The first feeble step toward conservation had been taken with the Desert Land Act of 1877, under which the federal government sold arid land cheaply on the condition that the purchaser irrigate the thirsty soil within three years. This was important in the overall project because it got the ball rolling and opened many Americans eyes to the growing issue of pollution. The luminosity of the star plays a role on the length of the HZ as well. The more light a stars radiates, the larger that star s HZ will be (Palmer). More light brings along more heat. As well as luminosity, another variable is time. As times ticks by, a star s luminosity increases, and as it increases the margins of the zone will expand. This indicates that, with time, planets within a HZ could change (Lissauer). Then there is the Greenhouse Effect, a planet with a plentiful hydrogen atmosphere might be able to extend its HZ. The Greenhouse gas would be able to absorb heat and extend the HZ up to fifteen astronomical units (AU). One AU is defined as the distance between the earth and the sun (Baalke). However, in reality the NPC serves mostly as a rubber stamp for Party decisions. One example of this is the NPC s right to elect party officials such as the President and Vice President. Technically the NPC has these rights, it is the CPC that actually appoints these positions and the NPC just simply agrees with the Party s decisions. A driving reason that the NPC has so much theoretical power, yet does not have any power in reality is that many NPC deputies are members of the CPC or are state officials or civil servants. China rejects the principle of separation of power, and this allows for NPC deputies to hold positions in these other branches of government. The NPC is designed to oversee the other branches of government that they are usually in, therefore, many members of the NPC are overseeing themselves. According to a leading Chinese media organization, 85% of the three thousand NPC members hold positions in other branches of the government. That number clearly shows why the NPC does not use any of their power, because they are overseeing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 54. Paulo Coehlo s The Alchemist In Paulo Coehlo s The Alchemist, the alchemist is asked, Why are you an alchemist? His response is simply, I m an alchemist because I m an alchemist. It is as straightforward as that. I am a theatre artist. There is not a cute story about how I saw a show when I was younger and was inspired; it is simply who I am to the core of my being. I am fortunate that my time in theatre has brought me to places like Cincinnati Music Hall s stage, the mainstage at Playhouse in the Park, the Guignol Theatre at the University of Kentucky, and other theatres that lend themselves to being name dropped. However, the theatre that I have done that has most shaped my worldview and molded who I am as a person has happened in the most unlikely of places: dormitory... With that necessity for dialogue in mind, I knew that giving a voice to those dealing with mental illnesses and attempting to lessen the stigmatization of mental illnesses and the stigmas surrounding suicide were topics that I not only wanted, but needed to cover. The subject of mental illness has influenced more of my theatre projects than any other subject. It has led to my acknowledging my own family s struggles with various cases of mental illness, my going into classrooms and working with middle school age girls on body image, and most recently, this past summer, it led to my working with six other individuals on a documentary theatre piece called The Brogan Dulle Project. Brogan Dulle was a 21 year old University of Cincinnati student who grew up down the street from most of us. He went missing May 18, 2014 and was found eight days later, having taken his own life. Over those eight days, the city of Cincinnati and Brogan Dulle made national news with the amount of people that were out searching for him. He was a close to home representative for something that we do not usually talk ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. Torture Is Always Wrong Analysis The author, Melissa Mae, explains the issue, along with the opposing sides, clearly. Mae begins the essay by introducing the issue. She says the abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib gained attention around 2004. Americans became concerned when they found out the government was using torture and were extremely upset about it. She states that people believed torture was being used as a part of the government s interrogation of war on terror detainees. Though she tells the readers what the issue is, she never fully explains it. She only tells us that the essays she wrote about were written around the time the debate was heating up. A positive trait about this essayis that she stated the issue in the first paragraph. Not only does Mae give examples from both sides, but she also includes many quotes that keep the reader interested. She writes, Whereas Bagaric and Clarke think saving lives justifies torture, however, Johnson believes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mae gives the same amount of examples from each side of the argument. Whenever talking about one writer, she also adds input from the other writer. Mae says, Bagaric and Clarke, in their turn, anticipate Johnson s argument and refute it by arguing that those who believe (as Johnson does) that torture is always wrong are misguided. This helps the reader understand both sides of the argument equally. The writer gives an interesting aspect to the essay. She makes her point clear to the audience, which makes the essay readable. In the essay, Mae adds fascinating details to keep the reader interested. When the essay begins to get uninteresting, she adds a detail that makes you want to continue reading. Paragraph two is a prime example of this. Mae gives a few facts about the authors, loosing interest from the reader, and then proceeds to add the common ground at the end of the paragraph. Adding the common ground there persuades the reader to continue ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
