This document provides album cover analyses for three albums: Kanye West's Graduation, Eminem's Curtain Call, and Tinie Tempah's Disc-overy. For each album, it describes the front and back cover artwork and any additional images in a fold-out section. Common elements like the artist's name and track listing are mentioned. Symbolism and themes in the artwork, such as representing an artist's past or rise to fame, are suggested.
3. KANYE WEST - GRADUATION
• This album was released on September
11th 2007. Graduation is the third
instalment of Kanye West's planned
albums. The digipak includes most of the
conventions and codes in which a digipak
normally contains. For example, on this
one it has his name, his record label and it
has the name of the album. However, the
whole thing does not include a single
photo of Kanye West and this contradicts
Andrew Goodwin’s theory which states that
due to the demands of the label, the artists
face will be presented. Both the front and
back cover have the same theme which
normally occurs through most digipaks like
this one.
4. FRONT AND BACK
This is the front cover of Kanye West’s album Graduation. It shows a mascot which
has been shot into the air by some sort of launcher. The Mascot is wearing the
same clothes as Kanye West so this mascot must symbolise Kanye. By the looks
of it they have shown him as a bear which may refer to him being a kid which has
been shot up to the stars. This may be referring to him becoming a star very early
in his life and very quickly.
This is the back cover of Kanye West’s album Graduation. It shows a
mascot which has been shot into the air by some sort of launcher but it
shows it from a different angle giving it a very unique effect. This effect
gives it a cool 3-D look to it because its almost if you can see all around the
mascot. The way in which the track list curves is also very interesting
because usually it would go directly down in a straight line and not curve at
all.
5. THE FOLDOUT.
Inside it shows the mascot back in his past clothing and almost running away from a monster. This could
represent Kanye running away from his past and graduating and getting on with his life and leaving
everything else behind. This then may link to the front of the case where he is being shot into the air which
may represent Kanye having a new beginning.
This digipak folds out which shows how the mascot has landed, graduated and determined. From this
it shows that he has found his feet in the world and that he is standing his ground. Also by the mascot
has now changed clothes which matches the background which may be suggesting that he now
blends in.
7. EMINEM - CURTAIN CALL
• The album was released on December 6,
2005. Curtain Call: The Hits is the first
greatest hits compilation album by
Eminem and it includes a wide collection
of his most popular songs in which he has
made and added a few new songs to it.
The digipak includes most of the
conventions and codes in which a digipak
normally contains. For example, on this
album cover it contains his name, album
name and common features such as the
trademark Parental Advisory Explicit
Content, as it is not unusual for these
artists to contain explicit content as it aims
normally for a slightly older target
audience.
8. FRONT AND BACK
This is the front cover of Eminem’s album Curtain Call. It shows the bottom half of
Eminem’s body and has fake roses all over the floor beneath him. As you can see
from the image, he is wearing a suit and some smart shoes. This front also shows
that he is not facing forward towards the camera and instead he is stood facing
away from the camera and this may suggest that he does not want to face his
audience which is why his face is not in the image and his body is not straight
This is the back cover of Eminem’s album Curtain Call. It shows even less
of the star and has a close up from behind him showing that the roses
which have been chucked at him are indeed fake, which is what may
Eminem may rather think of himself or think that is what his fans think of
him. It also has a clear shot of his shoe which is very clean and polished,
and this shows that he does have some class. The track list in displayed in
one after the other and not as a drop down list which is the usual style.
9. THE FOLDOUT
This digipak folds out which shows a classic black and white photo photo of Eminem being interrogated by
someone in which looks like is making Eminem feel stressed. This may link to Eminem’s songs in which
relate to all of the bad things in which has gone through to get where he is today. Underneath where the
disks lay, there is two images. One image shows Eminem’s logo as well as a dictionary definition underneath
of what his album cover means. The other photo showing him point a gun to the viewer and this altogether
shows how Eminem really feels about the fame in which he posses. So it is clear to the audience that from
his fame he doesn't want to face his own crowd due to how much stress he has been put under from them
and the only thing he can turn to is violence.
11. TINIE TEMPAH - DISC-OVERY
• This album was released on the 1st October
2010. Tinie made this album after the success
of his song “Pass out” which was released on
the 28th of February the same year and sold
over 92000 copies. After realising that this
single sold so many copies he only continued
to make singles, these included: Frisky,
Invincible and Written in the stars. He then
decided that an album should be made from
this which is why he called it Discovery due to
him being discovered as an artist by so many
people. He used the album to team up with as
many artists as he could in his album to try
and spread there names as well as his own.
The digipak includes most of the conventions
and codes in which a digipak normally
contains. For example, on this album cover it
contains his name and the album name.
12. FRONT AND BACK
This album cover immediately relates to the grime and pop culture. This is due
to the colours and the effects in which is used throughout the image and it
really stands out to its audience as the colours link to fun and clubbing or
dancing. This album cover also shows as if the artist has the whole city in arms
which may refer to him spreading his name everywhere and making people
know him. He is also shown as above the city which may refer to him meaning
that he has more power than them and that he is superior.
The galaxy theme is then continued on the back cover of the album.
This includes the song list, production information and the albums
barcode. The track list grows as it works its way down, also showing
all of the artists which got involved with each song which shows that
Tinie is promoting them.
