The cervical spine consists of 7 vertebrae, with C1-C2 being atypical and C3-C7 being typical. The atlas (C1) forms a ring and articulates with the occiput and axis. The axis (C2) has a strong odontoid process that provides attachment for ligaments. The cervical spine is stabilized by anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments as well as intervertebral discs and facet joints. Ossification of the cervical vertebrae begins in utero and continues throughout childhood, with fusion of parts occurring between ages 3-13 years.
