The cerebellum is located in the posterior cranial fossa behind the pons and medulla. It weighs around 150g and consists of two hemispheres connected by the vermis. The cerebellum coordinates precision and timing of movement rather than initiating movement. It is divided into three lobes - anterior, posterior, and flocculonodular. The cerebellum connects to the brainstem via three peduncles and contains grey matter in a highly folded arrangement. It functions as a comparator, receiving information from the cerebrum and spinal cord to fine tune motor performance. Damage can cause ataxia, nystagmus, gait issues, or intention tremors depending on the affected area.
